An excellent banquet followed , presided over in a genial manner by the W . M . The W . M ., in proposing the first toast— " The Queen " —said he wished to remind the brethren that the Queen was a mother of Masons , a grandmother of a Mason , and she was also the daughter of a Freemason , and that he expressed the feelings of the brethren when he said that they all adored her , and as a Queen they loved her , and that she possessed in her heart-all those qualities that they , as

Masons , held so dear—Faith , Hope , and Charity—and , although they were members of a secret society , they had as a first principle loyalty to the Sovereign of their native land , her Crown , and her dignity . The W . M . then said that next to her Majesty the Queen there was no person in Eng land who was more entitled to their consideration than the Prince of Wales , he therefore
called upon the brethren to honour the toast of "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . " The I . P . M ., Bro . G . H . Whitaker , next rose and proposed the toast of " The Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , Pro G . M . " The toast of " The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Deputy G . M .. and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and
Past , " was proposed by Bro . John Rogers , P . M . The Senior Warden next gave "The Prov . Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Lathom ; the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Crawford ; and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past . " Bro . F . Potter , P . P . A . G . D . C , responded . Bro . Dr . G . H . Whitaker , I . P . M ., said that the toast
which he had to propose gave him great satisfaction and pleasure , it was " The Health of the W . M . " He needed only to mention the name of Bro . Thornton to commend the toast to them , for he had served the two Wardenships in the lodge in a truly Masonic manner . The Worshipful Master gave the brethren his hearty and sincere thanks for the very kind and cordial reception they
had given him on taking that important chair in the Horwich Lodge , also for the flattering manner in which the toast had been proposed by the l . P . M . It was a satisfaction to know that he had been unanimously elected into the honourable position . He stated for their information that he was one of the oldest members of the Craft in the lodge , having also been a founder of the lodge ; and if the G . A . O . T . U . should
be pleased to spare his life during the ensuing year he would endeavour to rule the lodge firmly , and would always strive to make friends , not enemies , so that at the end of his year they would not have reason to regret that they had puthim in the chair of K . S ., and stated that he would maintain to the utmost of his abilities the traditions of the Craft and the first time in that excellent room , which was so admirably
adapted for their work . He could not foretell what was in store for them in the future , but he trusted there would be a wider field of usefulness , and still greater prosperity harmony of the lodge , and he wished them all " A Happy New Masonic Year . " The Worshipful Master next gave " The Immediate Past Master . " He was sure they would all agree with him that the toast that he was about to propose might be justly termed
the toast of the evening . He was sure that he expressed the feeling of every member of the lodge when he said that Bro . Dr . Whitaker was their noblest brother and their truest friend . He assured Bro . Whitaker that he was held by all in the highest estimation , for they all knew how admirably he had managed the lodge during his year of office . He had now the felicity of placing on his breast the gold jewel of the
lodge awarded unanimously by the brethren for the excellent manner he had presided over them , and he trusted that he would be spared many years to wear it with pleasure to himself and honour to the Craft . Bro . Dr . G . H . Whitaker . I . P . M ., in response , said that to say he thanked the brethren would be saying very little , for the words were toosmall to express his gratitude for the cordial
and unanimous manner in which they had received the toast of his health . He had endeavoured to merit their approbation during his year of office . They had had a successful year , having made six new Masons , all of whom he hoped would merit the confidence they had reposed in them . He thanked the brethren for the handsome jewel the W . M . had pinned on his breast . Wherever he went he would
wear it with pleasure and think of the many kind motives which prompted the brethren in giving him that mark of their esteem and gratitude . His best wish to all , from the W . M . to the latest joined brother was , that the eye of their minds may never be dimmed , that the strength of your homely Saxon may never be abated , and that custom will never render stale the infinite variety of their Masonic
pleasures and amusements . He thanked the brethren heartily and sincerely for the cordial manner in which they had drunk his health . "The Visitors" was next given by the W . M . Hesaidthere wasone toast in the Horwich Lodge which was always specially welcome , and that was the visitors . To hold out the right hand of fellowship was one of their first duties . In looking
round the festive board he saw many old friends , and he gave them , one and all , a hearty welcome , and trusted that they had all enjoyed themselves , and he would conclude by saying— " Will ye no' come back again ?" Bro . G . W . Dawson , P . M . 343 , responded , and said he expressed his thanks to the W . M . for being present on that occasion , and complimented him on his zeal for Masonry ,
and the very efficient manner in which the work of the lodge was done , and considering the earnestness shown by the officers and members , he thought that the Horwich Lodge had a bright future before it . Bro . Waring , P . M . 1134 , in response to the toast of " The Visitors , " expressed great pleasure at being present to assist at the ceremony of installation of Bro . Thornton , whom he
had known for many years . He felt certain Bro . 1 hornton would give the brethren every satisfaction in conducting the lodge business , and as he was a master of the ritual the ceremonies would be in very good hands . In concluding , Bro . Waring thanked the VV . 1 VL and brethren for the very kind and Masonic reception given to him . Bros . Potter , Pool , Goulbourne , and Urmston also
responded . The other toasts were " The Masonic Charities , " "The Past Masters , " " The Musical Brethren , " " The Treasurer and Secretary , " "The Officers of the Lodge , " and the Tyler's toast . Bro . Hinchliffe presided with his usual efficiency at the pianoforte , and Bros .

Dawson , Goulbourne , Urmston , and Bates largely contributed to a most pleasant evening ' s entertainment by some capital singing .
