Masonic Notes .

There was a very full attendance of brethren at the Quarterly Communication of United Grand Lodge of England on Wednesday last , but the proceedings passed off quietly , as is shown in the report we publish elsewhere in our columns . Two brethren were nominated

for the office of Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year namely , Bro . J . S . Cumberland , a P . P . S . G . W . of North and East Yorkshire , and Bro . J . D . Murray , of the Province of West Lancashire . There was also a

ballot taken for 12 Past Masters to serve for the ensuing 12 months on the Board of General Purposes . A reference to our report will show who were the successful candidates .

The resolutions brought forward b y Bros . Sir A , Woods , G . D . C , and Sir J . B . Monckton , P . G . W . respectively , to which we referred in our " Notes" of last week , were agreed to unanimousl y , and with unusual manifestations of pleasure on the part of the brethren .

By the former of these Grand Lod ge has decided that a portrait of Bro . the Earl of Lathom , Pro Grand Master , shall be painted and hung on the walls of its magnificent hall , as an enduring evidence of the respect and esteem with which his lordshi p is regarded .

By the latter , the first step has been taken towards officially recognising the importance of the approaching Jubilee of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , to whose funds the sum of £ 525 has been voted , and will appear among the contributions to that Festival .

* * * As regards the petitions from New Zealand in respect of the subject of a majority of the members of any lodge transferring their allegiance to a local Grand Lodge , it is satisfactory to know that the

commonsense interpretation of Article 2 i 9 Book of Constitutions , has prevailed , and that Grand Lodge has authoritativel y decided that the minority of the members of such lodge may retain the warrant and carry on the dutiesas provided for in the said Article . We have so often

expressed our opinions on this important question , that it is quite unnecessary we should repeat them after what has passed . We think , however , we may reasonably take some credit to ourselves for having placed these opinions before the Craft so promptly and , at the same time , so consistently .
