New Year's Entertainment By The Benevolent Institution.

NEW YEAR'S ENTERTAINMENT BY THE BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

The annual New Year s entertainment to the annuitants in residence at the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Aged Freemasons and Widows of Freemasons at Croydon , was given on Wednesday , and it was characterised by the same warmth and heartiness as its 26 predecessors notwithstanding the terribly wet weather , and that the visitors were fewer than

ordinary on account of the dreadful universality of sickness which is prevailing this winter . It was generally deplored that illness was the cause of the absence of one of the oldest , most consistent , and most devoted supporters of the Institution , its Treasurer , Bro . J , A . Farnfield , although the sorrow was in part alleviated by the telegram which was received from him

that he had been able on Tuesday to leave his bedroom ; but , still , there was another warm upholder of the Institution , Bro . James Stephens , who had been laid low by the same complaint as Bro . Farnfield—influenza—and whose presence at these gatherings always helped to give life to them , and he , as well as Bro . Farnfield , was remembered b y the company . To both these brethren Bro . James Terry telegraphed , and a reply was also received from Bro . James Stephens stating that he

also was better . With these two consolatory messages , therefore , the visitors and the annuitants were able to be more composed , and they expressed their p leasure at receiving such satisfactory reports . Bro . James Terry , and his trusted lieutenant , Bro . J . G . Stevens , went down to the Institution early in the morning , but the visitors , who journeyed thither by the 1 p . m . train from Cannon-street reached the hospitable premises just before 2 p . m ., the time appointed for the annuitants to sit down to dinner .

Among them were Bros . Dr . H . J . Strong , Hon . Physician to the Institution , J . H . Whadcoat , A . H . Hickman , Bro . and Mrs . Kempton , Bro . W . Gladding , Bro . Frederick Strattom and Mrs . Strattorn , Bro . T . Hastings Miller , Bro . David Hills , Bro . H . Massey , Miss Massey , Mrs . James Terry , Dr . J . Wayte , Hon . Surgeon to the Institution , Miss Gertrude M . Terry , Mrs . Skinner , Miss Mary E . Raiker , Miss Aida Crutch , Mr . A . T . and Mrs . Faull , and Miss Terry , Bro . W . J . Crutch , Bro . James Terry , jun ., and Mrs . Terry .

On their arrival they were cordially welcomed by Bro . Terry , Bro . Stevens and Miss Norris , Matron , and her sister , and a very few minutes after they sat down to dinner . Presents of tea and sugar were made to all the annuitants in residence , and in addition the male annuitants received g ifts of tobacco . Dr . Strong presided at the dinner , and the vice-chairs were occupied by Bros . Terry , Whadcoat , Gladding , and Kempton .

When the dinner was concluded , the few toasts given on these occasions were proposed . The toast of "The Queen , Patroness of Masonry , and of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , " having been duly honoured , Bro . Dr . S TRONG proposed "The Founders of the Feast , " a feast which , he said , was provided entirely by voluntary contributions , the funds

of the Institution not being drawn upon in the least to furnish any part of it . He then specially alluded to the absence of Bros . Farnfield and James Stephens . He called upon Bro . T . Hastings Miller , CC , to reply , and informed the company that Bro . Hastings Miller had lately had the high honour conferred upon him of a Deputy Lieutenant of the City of London . Bro . T . H ASTINGS M ILLER said the founders of the feast were only too glad to contribute to the enjoyment of the annuitants . He was verv sorrv

for the absence of Bros . Farnfield and Stephens , but hoped that for many years they would be among the company at these entertainments . Bro . KEMPTON acknowledged the toast of " Miss Norris , the Matron of the Institution , " to whose worth in that capacity Bro . Dr . STRONG paid a high tribute in proposing the toast . Bro . Kempton said that , while the Queen had the designation of Empress , Miss Norris was empress of a small world at Croydon , and she was all an empress should be in that
