We are pleased to note that Bro . J . E . Le Feuvre , J . P ., P . G . D ., D . P . G . M . Hampshire and Isle of Wight , 32 , has been appointed by the Supreme Council , 33 ° Inspector-General for the Southern District .

* * * It will be seen from our report elsewhere that Supreme Grand Chapter , following the example of Grand Lodge in December last , voted , at its Quarterly Convocation on Wednesday , a handsome donation , amounting to 100 guineas , to the funds of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at the approaching Jubilee Anniversary of its foundation in 1842 .

Masonic Notes.

It is with very deep regret that we announce the death of Bro . Col . A . C . Foster Gough , LL . D ., Prov . Grand Master of Staffordshire . Only as recently as Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., Bro . Gough attended the Special Communication of Grand Lodge which was held for the purpose of considering and adopting

certain resolutions of condolence with his Royal Highness the M . W . G . M ., & c , & c , on the death of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale . Our late brother was at the time in anything but his usual health and spirits , but there was nothing in his appearance or manner that in any way betokened that his end

was so near . He was indeed a man for whom it might have been considered safe to predict the prolongation of his life for several years to come . But , alas ! any such prediction would have been falsified within a few days of its utterance , and he whom we

looked to meet on many future occasions has been summoned to his last rest . Nothing therefore remains for us but to express our sympathy with his sorrowing relatives and the large number of Masonic and non-Masonic friends whom , in the course of his career , he had gathered around him .

Bro . Col . Gough was indeed a most admirable specimen of the zealous and enthusiastic Mason . He was the very personification of geniality and kindness , while , at the same time , he had a lofty sense of duty , and what he considered it incumbent on him to do in

this respect in his exalted office of Provincial Grand Master , he expected should be done by those whom he appointed to oflice in his Provincial Grand Lodge . He was likewise as painstaking a chief as he was a capable one . He was constantly traversing his province so that he might see for himself what was passing in the

various lodges , and form his own judgment of thc zeal and ability of the brethren under his charge . He also encouraged the members to establish lodges of instruction , so that they might perfect themselves as nearly as possible in our ritual . In fact , he left nothing undone

which appeared to him calculated to promote the welfare of the province committed to his charge , and Staffordshire must feel that by his unlooked-for death it has sustained a loss which , for a time at all events ,, will seriously affect the even tenour of its progress . * * *

A correspondent has very kindly informed us , apropos : of one of our Notes of last week , that the Duke of Clarence and Avondale was to have been installed ! W . M . of the Studholme Lodge , No . 1591 , on the 15 th ult . —the day following his death , and that later in the afternoon of the same day he was to have been exalted to the Royal Arch in the Studholme Chapter . We

knew of his late Royal Higbness ' s proposed installation , though we did not mention it in our memoir or in the Notes we have since written , but we were not aware of his proposed exaltation , and are , therefore , extremely obliged to our informant for the trouble he has taken in the matter . This will no doubt account for the confusion of ideas which was so apparent in one of the announcements of our Masonic contemporary .

* » * We learn from the minutes of the proceedings of the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of All Scottish Freemasonry in India , which was held at Freemasons' Hall , Bombay , on the 30 th November last ,

that Bro . J . W . Smith , Grand Muster Depute , has been unanimously appointed by the Grand Lodge of Scotland to be Grand Master of All Scottish Freemasonry in India in succession to the late lamented Bro . Sir Henry Morland . We congratulate Bro . Smith and our Scottish brethren in India on this appointment .
