BRO . GEORGE BRIGGS , C . C ., and Mrs . Briggs intend spending the Easter recess at San Remo . THE DUKE OF BEDFORD , Lord-Lieutenant of Middlesex , will open Alexandra Palace and Park for the people on Saturday , iSth May . THE BRETHREN of Newton Abbey Lodge , No . 113 S , Devon , have now decided to hold their conversazione and dance on Thursday , May 2 nd , at the Masonic Hall , Devon Square .

A SERIES of six windows have been placed in the new Masonic Hall at St . Austell by Messrs . Steggles and Gitsham , of London . The treatment shows the different Degrees of Freemasonry . THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT has graciously consented to become the president to the Royal Albert Orphan Asylum ( Bagshot ) in the place of the Duke of Edinburgh , who was the president for 32 years .

THE KING s CIVIL LIST . —It is understood that the Select Committee on the King ' s Civil List has arrived at the conclusion that there should be a Civil List of £ 420 , 000 and a sum of £ 50 , 000 as the separately paid provision for her Majesty . THE ANNUAL BALL in aid of the funds of the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage , of which her late Majesty was patron , will take place on the 29 th instant , and will be attended by Bro . the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress , the Sheriffs , and Under-Sheriffs .

SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKET TEAM . —A team of South African cricketers will sail for England on the 17 th inst . to fulfil a series of engagements with the various counties . The Hon . J . D Logan , member of the Legislative Council , who is the promoter of the tour , accompanies the team . MADAME SUSANNA COLE FUND . —Messrs . Rothschild have sent a cheque for £ 25 to Messrs . Chappell and Co . on behalf of the fund organised for the purpose of purchasing an annuity for Madame Susanna Cole , the veteran vocalist . The donation was accompanied by a most sympathetic letter .

BRO . T . H . BROOKE-HITCHING . C . C ., J . P ., and Mrs . Brooke-Hitching have left England to spend a few weeks in the Italian Riviera . Bro . Brooke-Hitching has been suffering from the effects of a severe chill for some weeks past , and is now in the south of France in the hope of shaking off the malady .

MR . HOWARD DBIGHTON , the clerk of the Homers' Company , has recei ved a letter from Sir Francis Knollys , K . C . M . G ., K . C . B ., stating that the King will be pleased to receive from the master , wardens , and court of assistants of the company a horn casket for the Horn Room at Osborne . UNIVERSITY EXTENSION . —The annual address to the students of the London Society for the Extension of University Teaching will be delivered at the Mansion House on Saturday , May 4 th , at three o ' clock , by the Right Hon . Sir Mountstuart Grant Duff . The subject of Ihe address will be " The Poetry of the Victorian Age . " Bro . the Lord Mayor will preside .

CARROLL wishes to give notice that , after some 50 years of business as a watch and clock maker in Beer-lane , Great Tower-street , he finds his business has outgrown the space at his disposal , and has consequently taken larger and more convenient premises at 20 London-street ( opposite Fenchurch-street Station ) at the same time retaining the old .

NEWSVENDORS' BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION . —Bro . the Lord Mayor will preside at the Festival Dinner of the Newsvendors' Benevolent and Provident Institution on Tuesday , 25 th June , at Stationers' Hall . The special object of his lordship ' s appeal for funds is to establish further pensions for the widows of newsvendors in commemoration of the reign of her late Majesty Oueen Victoria .

THE CITY ' S PARLIAMENT . —On the 2 Sth ult ., a meeting of the Court ot Common Council was held at Guildhall , Bro . the Lord Mayor presiding . Bro . Hastings Miller , the Chief Commoner , moved that the freedom of the City , together with a sword of honour of the usual value , be presented to Col . Sir James Willcocks , D . S . O ., K . C . M . G ., in testimony of the Court ' s high appreciation of his recent gallant services in Ashanti , West Africa . Bro . Alderman Sir Whittaker Ellis seconded the resolution , which was adopted with acclamation .

AN ELABORATE HISTORY OK MUSIC is now in preparation under the auspices of the Clarendon Press . It will be in six large volumes , three of which will be issued this year , the first and second , dealing with the " Ecclesiastical Period , " being bv Mr . Wooldridge ; the third , * 'The Seventeenth Century , " being by Professor Sir Hubert Parry ; the louith , " The Age of Bach and Handel , " by Mr . Maitland ; the fifth , " The Viennese School and its Times , " by Mr . JIadow ; and the last volume of all , " The Romantic Movement , " being by Mr . Dannreuthcr . Within its limits , this will probably prove to be one of the most important histories of music in our language .

EVERYONE will sympathise with Bro . W . L . Jackson , the member of North Leeds and chairman of the Great Northern Railway , on the shockingly sudden death of his wife , Mrs . Jackson , who was a daughter of Mr . G . | Tempest , was married to Bro . Jackson in 1 SC 0 . Their son is Mr . F . S . Jackson , the famous Cambridge and York shire cricketer . Bro . Jackson , who was born in 1 S 40 , is a self-made man , and has told on public platforms how , when a boy , he would get up at six and work in the tanyard till half-past eight , before walking two or three miles to school . He has been Chief Secretary of Ireland , and he deserved well of his party for the way in which he presided over th e deliberations of the South Africa Committee and the Contracts Committee .

THE TIVOLI , STRAND . —On Easter Monday there will be an entire change in the Tivoli programme , with the one exception of The Great Everhart , " who , in consequence of his popularity , will be continued through the Easter holidays . MR . J HOGG , 13 , Paternoster-row , will shottly begin to issue what promises to be a standaid series of technical handbooks on the artistic crafts , suitable for schools , workshops , libraries , and all interested in the arts . The series will be under the general editorship of Mr . W . R . Lethaby , a director of the L . C . C . Central School of Arts and Crafts , and Professor of Design at South Kensington . Each craft will be

dealt with bv an expert qualified to speak with authority on design as well as on workmanship . The volumes will be fully illustrated , and issued at a moderate pries . Mr . Douglas Cockerell will commence the series with " The Crafc of Bjjkbinding and the Preservation of Books : A Text-book for Bookbinders and Librarians " ; to be followed by Mr . H . Wilson on "Gold and Silver Smiths' Work , " and Mr . C . Spooner on " Cabinet Making and Designing , " with others in due course .

THE MYSTERY of Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan's birthplace has now been cleared up by that indefatigable histoiian of old musical London , Mr . F . G . Edwards . Mr . Augustus Littleton has even secured a picture of the house for the April number of the Musical Times . It is in a lowly neighbourhood , a turning out of Lambeth-walk , and on the top of the row of eight tenements is cut in the stone "Bolwell Terrace , 1 S 3 S , " so that it was built four years before the composer's birth . Sullivan , his father , and the place was rated at the modest sum of £ 20 a year . The fact that Sulliva n ' s second name , Seymour , was conferred upon him after birth registration is already known . BRO . THE LORD MAYOR will entertain his Majesty ' s Judges at dinner at the Mansion House on Wednesday evening , June 12 th next . A TE DEUM will be sung in the Greek Church , Moscow-road , on Sunday next , the 7 th inst ., at 12 o ' clock , on the occasion of the anniversary of the Independence of Greece .

H . R . H . PRINCESS VICTORIA left town on the 2 nd inst . to pass a few days m Carnarvonshire . The visit , like her Royal Highness ' s recent stay in Devonshire , is quite a private one . MR . LUKE FILDES , R . A ., has been honoured by the command of the King to paint a full-length State portrait of his Majesty . This picture will represent his Majesty in his robes of State , and will be the official poitrait .

ONE of the Oxford crew was Mr . A . De Lande Long , a npphew of Bro . Sir John B . Monckton . It is of interest to rote that the Blue's father , Mr . A . De Lande Long , was a famous oar in his time , winning the Wingfield Sculls in 1 S 6 9 and 1 S 70 . SOCIETAS ROSICRUCIANA IN ANGLIA . —An obligatory convocation of the Metropolitan College will-be held at the Restaurant Frascati . BRO . HENNIKER HEATON , M . P ., has forwarded to the Postmaster-General a memorial signed by about 100 members of the House of Commons in favour of a royal scarlet or red stamp in place of the present mauve penny stamp . THE WALLACE COLLECTION will be closed to-morrow ( Good Friday ) , but will be open on Saturday , the 0 th , and Monday , the Sth , free , from 10 a . m . to six p . m . ; also on Sunday , the 7 th , from two to five p . m ., and on every Sunday until the end of October .

AN ARMY ORDER dealing with the issue of medal : for the South African War was promulgated on the 2 nd instant . It sets forth that the King has been pleased to confirm the commands given in this connection by Queen Victoria . A number of operations are specified for which special clasps will be awarded . THE HOSPITAL SATURDAY FUND . —The receipts from workshops and business houses from January gth to the iCth ult . amounted to £ 2387 12 s . 6 d ., as compared with £ 2 ISQ in the corresponding period of last year . The "Special Hospital Saturday " collection for the present year will be made on Saturday , October 12 th .

AT A MEETING of the London County Council , held on the 2 nd inst ., sanction was given to the expenditure by the Housing of the Working Classes Committee of £ 91 , 500 . on the Lordship-lane Estate , on which it is proposed to erect 5779 cottages . Mr . C . Armbrustcr was appointed musical adviser to the Council for the coming season , at a fee of £ 140 .

THE ROYAL SCOTTISH CORPORATION . —In order to mark the accession to the ihrone of his Majesty the King , who , as Prince of Wales , was Preside nt of the Corporation for over 30 years , the Governors of the Royal Scottish Corporation have decided to create 10 additional £ 13 pensions , which will be filled at the annual election at the end of the month .

MEN OF KENT AND KENTISH MEN . —The last Cinderella dance of the season took place at the Bridge House Hotel on the 30 th ult . under very enjoyable auspices . A social evening has been arranged to be held at the Holborn Restaurant on St . George ' s Day , Tuesday , the 23 rd inst . The proceeds will be devoted to the Benevolent Fund of the association . Between 20 and 30 new members were elected at the last meeting of

the association . THE PUBLIC SCHOOL masters who are visiting the Isles of Greece during the Easter vacation left London on the 2 nd inst ., via Dover and Calais , for Marseilles , where they will join the steamship Argonaut . No such representative company of schoolmasters has ever before left British shores . It includes representatives from Eton , Harrow , W inchester , Rugby , St . Paul's , Bradford , Clifton , Marlborough , and Haileybury . The idea of the cruise originated with the Rev . W . C . Compton , of Dover College . Lectures will be given by Mr . Stogdon , of Harrow , Mr . Rouse , of Rugby , and others .

THE SPANISH ART EXHIBITION . —The Guildhall Art Gallery is being prepared for the reception of the pictures which will comprise the Art Loin Exhibition to be opened on Monday , the 22 nd instant , by Bro . the Lord Mayor . Tne members ot the Corporation will have a private view of the exhibition on Saturday , the 20 th instant . The Spanish School of Art is little known in this country , and the forthcoming exhibition will be somewhat of a revelation to lovers of pictorial art . The cjllectij-i promises to be one of exceptional interest , as great pains have been taken to secure a representative exhibition of the finest paintings by Spanish artists from very remote diys .

O . v BEHALF of the members of the Coal , Corn , and Finance Committee of the Corporation of the City of London , Bro . the Lord Mayor , at a dinner at the Hotel Cecil , on the 2 nd instant , made a presentation to Mr . Deputy Myers , on his re-election as chairman , as a token of esteem and regard . Among those present were Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Vaughan Morgan , Bro . Sir Joseph Dimsdale , . VI . P ., Mr . B . L . Cohen , M . P .,

Bro . Sir Joseph Savory , Sir Marcus Samuel , and Bro . Sir John Monckton . In proposing " The Houses of Parliament " Mr . W . O . Clough expressed the hope that the health of the Marquis of Salisbury would continue to improve , and that the statesman who had rendered such magnificent services to his country and generation might be granted a long drawn-out , peaceful , and happy eventide of life .

NEW FORESTERS' HALLS AT DUNDEE . — Ihe foundation stone of the neiv Foresters' Halls was laid on the 30 th ult . with Masonic honours . The building scheme has been entered into by the Dundee Courts of the Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society , and , when finished , it is estimited that the cost will be between £ 13 , 003 and £ 14000 . At the present time , however , the part of the scheme which provides for the

, erection of a large hall and two small halls is being proceeded with , and it is estimitea to cost about ^ Sooo . The Masonic ceremony was performed by Bro . James Berry , Prov . Grand Master of Forfarshire , in presence of a large number of Freemasons in the province , together with the representatives of ths trades and friendly societies in Dundee .

and mensuration , incidental to the above callings . The use oi the trigonometer not only save ? time , but also ensures absolute mechanical accuracy , the chance of error , when working out calculations , being entirely eliminated . The instrument is an outfit in itself , superseding the use of the squares , with fixed and movable blades , set squares , parallel rules , protractors , scales , & c . PORTERS AND THEIR WORK . —A Successful Festival . —The 34 th anniversary festival of the London General Porters' Benevolent Association held recently brought together a large number of principals of the wholesale houses . Bro . Victor Tapling was in the chair , supported by Mr . S . Hope Morley , President of the Ins . i " tution . The Chairman , in proposing the toast of the evening , pointed out that the Charity appealed peculiarly to the great mass of traders , as it represented the rank and file of the commercial army . They worked hard and worked late , and

they were loyal to their employers . It was said that the porters were not thrifty , but he put it to them that it was difficult to save upon 24 s . a week . ( Cheers . ) » was also said that they had large families . ( Laughter . ) Well , what was wanted in this country was men , and what better Tommy Atkinses did they find anywhere than among the porters and their sons . ( Cheers . ) So he said good luck to them in their domestic relations , especially if their offspring were boys . ( Laug hter and cheers . ) As a trading community , they owed so much to the porters that it

behoved them to support the institution to the utmost of their power , especially as they were along way off old age pensions . ( Cheers . ) Mr . Mope Morley p ' 1 " a special tribute to the Chairman for his exertions in securing a handsome list ol subscriptions , at a time which was not propitious . He could not help thinking that the Chairman ' s experience in the battlefield last year had enabled bin 1 " | face the situation with boldness . The building scheme has been entered into by the Dundee Courts of the Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society , and , when finished , it is estimited that the cost will be between £ 13 , 003 and £ 14000 . At the present time , however , the part of the scheme which provides for the

PORTERS AND THEIR WORK . —A Successful Festival . —The 34 th anniversary festival of the London General Porters' Benevolent Association held recently brought together a large number of principals of the wholesale houses . Bro . Victor Tapling was in the chair , supported by Mr . S . Hope Morley , President of the Ins . i " tution . The Chairman , in proposing the toast of the evening , pointed out that the Charity appealed peculiarly to the great mass of traders , as it represented the rank and file of the commercial army . They worked hard and worked late , and

they were loyal to their employers . It was said that the porters were not thrifty , but he put it to them that it was difficult to save upon 24 s . a week . ( Cheers . ) » was also said that they had large families . ( Laughter . ) Well , what was wanted in this country was men , and what better Tommy Atkinses did they find anywhere than among the porters and their sons . ( Cheers . ) So he said good luck to them in their domestic relations , especially if their offspring were boys . ( Laug hter and cheers . ) As a trading community , they owed so much to the porters that it

behoved them to support the institution to the utmost of their power , especially as they were along way off old age pensions . ( Cheers . ) Mr . Mope Morley p ' 1 " a special tribute to the Chairman for his exertions in securing a handsome list ol subscriptions , at a time which was not propitious . He could not help thinking that the Chairman ' s experience in the battlefield last year had enabled bin 1 " | face the situation with boldness .
