It will be seen from a letter which appears in another ^ lumn , that H . R . H . the Duke cf Connaught , K . G ., now that he has ken elected M . W . G . M ., ' in having regard to the many and gieit responsibilities which devolve upon him , has found it mce-= sary to vacate the olhce of Provincial Grand Master of Sussex , which he has held

for so many yfars to the great advantage of ne 1 rovince . None will regret the severance of this « e more deeply than his Royal Highness who has always taken so great an interest in Sussex Masonry « in the letter announcing his resolution speaks warml y „ f ty , |) lcas „ ,, c hat , d d association .

Next week Great Queen-street will be , as usual , a centre of great activity in connection with our School Elections , that of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls taking place at the Quarterly General-Court of Governors and Subscribers , which will be held in the

targe hall of Freemasons' Tavern on Thursday , the nth instant , and that of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys at the Quarterly Court which will be held in the same place on the following day . In both cases the chair will be taken at 12 noon .

* * * For the Girls' School there are 22 approved candidates and 15 vacancies to be competed for . Towards the former London contributes four children , and has a joint interest with a Province or District in three

others ; the remaining 15 hail from the Provinces and Abroad , Essex , Hampshire , and the Isle of Wight and South Wales ( E . D . ) being each of them responsible for two . Only seven of the children have been on the list-at a previous ballot , but none of these bring

forward any appreciable number of votes , the highest figure being 134 to the credit of No . 6 . But Nos . 1 and 7 have this only chance left them of winning admission , as before the next election in October comes on they will have become ineligible on the score of

age . * * For the Boys' School there are both more approved candidates and more vacancies available for the competition , there being 37 of the former , of whom five

were in the running in October , 1 9 , and 23 to be elected . London is responsible for six boys , and has a joint interest with a Province or District in five others , the remaining 26 being all from Provinces or Abroad . Each of the five old candidates has a

substantial array of votes to his credit , ranging from 4396 in the case of No . 1 down to 1209 for No . 2 , and to this extent these have a material advantage over the new competitors . But there are three of the latter who will have allowed them only this one

chance of being elected , and it will be necessary for their friends to exert themselves , if they desire to place them among the successful , as between now and the October election they will attain the age of 11 years , and cease to be eligible for admission . These three boys stand at Nos . 10 , 18 , and 26 .

» * * In behalf of the five last cases we have specified , namely , Nos . 1 and 7 of the Girl Candidates and Nos . 10 , 18 , and 26 ot the Boy Candidates , we make our usual earnest appeal to all those Governors and

Subscribers who have not already promised their votes and influence to any candidate , to do all in their power to help these children . We do this , not because we know anything of the children themselves or the merits of the claims they may have on the support of

the voters , but for the reason we have furnished in the case of all the children who have been similarly circumstanced at the elections that have been held for many years past , namely , that as they have all been adjudged worthy of the benefits dispensed by our

Schools , no just effort should be spared in order to secure their election . Others can wait , as , if not successful next week , they will have at leastone more chance of winning places , but with the five we have enumerated

it is a case of " now or never . " The lists are now so moderate in proportion to the vacancies that are balloted for , that every child whose credentials pass muster with the Committees should find a place in the School for which he or she is a candidate .

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Ijcncvolent Institution will hold their meeting for the current mouth at Freemasons' Hall 011 Wednesday , the 10 th instant , when the Secretary will report any deaths among the annuitants or approved candidates that may have occurred since the last ,

meeting . The usual Sub-Committee will also be appointed for the purpose of drawing up the Report for the past year , to be approved at the May Committee and as then approved , submitted to the Annual General Meeting of Governors and Subscribers , which will be held at Freemasons' Tavern on the third Friday in the month .

Wc are pleased to see that at the Girls' School Quarterly Court on Thursday , the nth instant , a motion , of which notice has been given b y Bro . Stanley J . Attenborough , P . A . G . D . C , Patron , will be

brought forward , to accept the sum of 1550 guineas from the Province of Kent in commemoration of the 113 th Anniversary Festival of the Institution , to be held under the presidency of the M . W . the Pro Grand Master , the EARL AMHERST , R . W . Prov . G . M . Kent ,

Masonic Notes.

for the purchase of a Perpetual Presentation of one Girl to the School , to be called the ' Earl Amherst Presentation , ' " the right of presentation being vested in the Charity Committee for the time being of the Prov . Grand Lodge . It is in every way desirable that the memory of the services which Lord Amherst

has rendered to Freemasonry and its Institutions , and particularly his association with the Province of Kent as its Grand Master for the last 40 years , should be perpetuated , and we do not think our Kentish brethren could have selected a better mode of honouring his lordship than to make this presentation a memorial of his Chairmanship on this occasion .

The first meeting of the Board of Stewards for the 113 th Anniversary Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls was held at the Freemasons' Hall , on Monday , the 1 st instant . The chair was occupied by Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . W ., who , in the

course of the proceedings , was elected Chairman of the Board , while Bro . J . Eastes , P . G . D ., Dep . Prov . Grand Master of Kent , was elected Hon . Treasurer 1 Bro . C . E . Keyser , P . G . D ., Chairman of the Ladies '

Stewards , and Bro . F . R . W . Hedges , P . G . S . B ., Secretary of the Institution , its Hon . Secretary . Arrangements , as far as possible , were also made for the music and other matters . We are glad to say there are about 500 ladies and brethren on the Board .

# # # A meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge Charity Committee of East Lancashire was held at Freemasons' Hall , Manchester , on Friday , the 23 rd ult ., when Bro . C . D . Cheetham was re-elected Chairman

and as Bro . T . J . Hooper did not seek re-election as Vice-Chairman owing to ill-health , Bro . J . B . Goulburn was chosen Vice-President in his stead . A Petitions Committee , consisting of eight brethren , was also elected , and Bros . C . D . Cheetham , J . B . Goulburn ,

and James Newton , P . G . S . B ., Prov . G . Secretary , were appointed to attend the elections of candidates to the Central Masonic Institutions . A widow candidate for the election at the annual general meeting next

month of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution was adopted , but the case of a male candidate for the same election was deferred for further consideration . The proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman for presiding .

* * We have received copy of the proceedings of an Especial Communication of the District Grand Lodge of Bengal , which was held under the presidency of Bro . the Hon . Sir H . T . Prinsep , Knt ., District Grand

Master , at Freemasons' Hall , Calcutta , on Tuesday , the 19 th February last , when a resolution expressive of the " profound sorrow " of the brethren ,: at the death of their much-beloved Sovereign , her Majesty Queen

Victoria , Empress of India , " and of " their respectful and sincere sympathy" with King Edward VII ., Emperor of India , the Queen-Empress Alexandra , and the rest of the Royal Family , " was adopted in solemn silence . There was a full attendance of Dis

tnct Grand Officers and brethren , among them being Bros . W . H . Fitze , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M . ; H . M . Rustomjee , P . A . G . D . C , Dist . G . Secretary ; and Bro . J . Stivens , P . G . D ., Past Dep . D . G . M ., was a visitor .

* * * We have also to acknowledge receipt of copy of proceedings at the regular Quarterly Communication of the District Grand Lodge of Canterbury ( N . Z ) , which was held under tlie presidency of Bro . Richard

Dunn Thomas , District Grand Master , at the St . Augustine Masonic Hall , Christchurch , on Monday the 28 th January last . At this meeting a similar resolution of " deep and sincere regret " at the dei . th of the late Queen Victoria and of sympathy with and

loyal devotion to King Edward VII ., and the Royil Family was adopted . The regular business was subsequently transacted , the Reports of the District Boards of General Purposes and Benevolence bein /

adopted and the new District Grand Officers for the ensuing year appointed and invested . There apnea : s to have been a good attendance of District Grand Officers , while only one of the eight lodges in the District was unrepresented .

« » * llro . W . E . Porter , M . D , the medical officer of the Royal Masonic Institution for Bays , is to be congratulated on the success of his lectures on ambulance

work , a third series of which he recently completed , with the result that all the ly bays who were entered for the latest examination ot the St . John Ambalanc-j Society passed the prescribed ordeal with credit .
