LODGE OF ANTIQUITY ( No . 2 ) . — A very brilliant gathering of this Immemorial Lodge took place on Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., at Freemasons' Hall , under the distinguished presidency of Bro . E . Letchworth , P . G . D ., Bro . Sutherland , M . P ., and Chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Company , was raised to the

Sublime Degree of Master Mason in a most admirable and impressive manner by Bro . Letchworth , and was duly decorated with the jewel of the Royal Order appurtenant to the lodge ; indeed , the whole of the working and ceremonial appeared to give unqualified satisfaction to the numerous company assembled , and Old Antiquity fully maintained under Bro . Letchworth its ancient and high repute for

admirable working . The normal business being over , the lodge was closed until June for its last meeting for the summer . Labour being ended , the brethren proceeded to the social circle , and where , under their excellent and able head , they indeed enjoyed " a feast of reason and the flow of soul . " The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and

received with great heartiness and effect . Bro . C . Barry , G . S ., returned thanks for "The Grand Officers" concisely but ably , and Bro . Puleston , P . M ., M . P ., returned thanks for the numerous visitors in a thoroughly genial and effective speech , which drew down much applause , and was alike appreciated by his brother visitors as by the

members of the lodge . . . Several other toasts having been given and received in the usual hearty manner which is characteristic of Antiquity . the Tyler ' s toast , fitly closed the agreeable programme . Young having been presented , he was duly inducted into the chair of K . S . The Board of Installed Masters was composed of Bros . Marshall , as S . W . ; Strugnell , J . W . ; Lardner , D . C . ; Clarke , I . G . ; and others . The officers invested for the year ensuing were Bros . Simpson , S . W . ;

Clarke , J . W . ; Lardner , Treas . ; Jackson , Sec . ; Lister , S . D . ; Skelhorne , J . D . ; L . Lardner , I . G . , * Lott , Org . ; Walls , D . C ; Herbert , W . S . ; Suskin , A . D . C ; Webber , A . W . S . ; and Parkinson , Tyler . A Past Master ' s jewel ( manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ) , having been presented to Bro . Marshall , P . M ., who duly returned thanks for the honour , a vote of thanks was unanimously passed to

Bro . Walls , Installing Master , and Bro . Lardner , D . C , for their services . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth , the usual toasts were given by the W . M . briefly but pertinently . During the evening Bros . Kift , L . and J . Lardner , Herbert , and others musically entertained the brethren , Bro . Kift's

exertions being especially appreciated . The entire proceedings were most successful , and reflected great credit upon the executive . ——DARTFORD . —Emulation Lodge ( No . 299 ) . — The members of this lodge held their annual meeting in the lodge room at the Royal Bull Hotel , on Tuesday , the 26 th ult ., when the W . M . elect , Bro . Hugh Hamilton McNaul , was installed into the chair of K . S . There was a large

careful manner in which he had performed the installation ceremony was carried by acclamation , and the Installing Master expressed the pleasure it afforded him to know that the brethren had appreciated his services . Bro . Jamblin said that the W . M ., in appointing his Treasurer . remarked thatjBro . Noah Martin had discharged the duties of that office efficiently and well for nearly a

quarter of a century and he ( Bro . Jamblin ) thought the time had now arrived when the lodge might very well mark their approval of Bro . Mai tin ' s services . Nothing he was sure could increase Bro . Martin ' s interest in the lodge , but he had great pleasure in proposing that he be presented with a Treasurer ' s jewel . The I . P . M . heartily seconded the proposal , and the VV . M . said he was very pleased that

i . had been made { at the commencement of his year of office . The proposition ' was agreed to unanimously , and Bro . Martin expressed his gratitude . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . At the close the lodge-room was speedily converted into a banqueting-hall , and a large company sat down under the presidency of the VV . M ., Bro . H . H . McNaul . The

usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly proposed and honoured . ¦ In proposing "The Health of the Past Masters , " the VV . M . paid a high compliment to the I . P . M ., Bro . Brock , who had cast such a lustre on the lodge . He had great pleasure in presenting him with a Past Master ' s jewel , which had been unanimously voted by the lodge . He

hoped he might live to wear it for many years , and that it might be handed down to his children as an honourable distinction gained by true worth and merit . The I . P . M ., in reply , said he fully appreciated all the kindness which had been shown to him . During his year of office they had gone along smoothly and pleasantly , there had becn no angry feeling nor a particle of

unkindness manifested in any shape or form , and the support he had received from the Past Masters , officers , and brethren had been all he could have desired . He was also proud of the candidates who had come forward during the year , and he hoped they had appreciated what had been said and done , and that they would take the teachings of Freemasonry to heart and act up to them in and out of the

lodge . He should very much value the jewel which the lodge had given him , and he felt sure his children would never have cause to regret their father ' s connection with the Lodge of Emulation . Bro . Noah Martin also replied on behalf of the Past Masters . Bro . Parish submitted "The Masonic Charities , " and Bro . T . Wills , in reply , spoke of the good work which had

been done during the past year . The W . M . proposed "The Officers of the Lodge , " and said they had all worked ardently and earnestly for the benefit of the Order . The toast was cheerfully acknowledged by Bros . Chapman , S . W . ; Greig , J . W . ; T . Wills , Sec ; N . Martin , Treasurer ; and Bro . Snowden , S . D .

Thc W . M . thanked those brethren who had contributed to the musical part of the entertainment , especially Bros . White and Page , who had arranged everything so nicely . The names of Bros . Kift and Bevan were also mentioned , and the first two responded . Bro . Bray was thanked for the excellent dinner he had provided , and the company soon afterwards separated , having spent a thoroughly enjoyable and profitable evening .

COLCHESTER . —United Lodge ( No . 697 ) . — On Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., the V . W . D . P . G . M . of the Masonic Province of Essex , Bro . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , Recorder of Colchester , visited Colchester for the purpose of installing Bro . John T . Bailey as W . M . of this lodge . There was a large gathering of the members of the lodge and visitors , and the proceedings passed off most

successfully . The installation ceremony was performed in the most perfect and impressive manner by the V . W . D . P . G . M ., and at its close the following were appointed as officers for the ensuing year : Bros . Robert Smith , I . P . M . ; Rev . W . Morgan Jones , S . VV . ; A . Gosling , P . M ., J . VV . ; Rev . D ., one of the

founders of the United Lodge , presenting to the lodge a photograph of its first officers . In the absence of Bro . Col . Burney , the presentation was made by W . Bro . the Rev . E . H . Crate , who , in a few well chosen words , spoke of the interest attaching to the photograph , and congratulated the lodge upon the possession of so interesting a memento . On the motion of VV . Bro . T . Eustace , P . M .,

one of the oldest members 01 the lodge , seconded by the W . M ., a vote of thanks was passed to Bro . Col . Burney for his present . A cordial vote of thanks was also passed to V . W . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , D . P . G . M ., G . Reg ., for his kindness in attending and performing the ceremony . Between 40 and 50 brethren afterwards dined together at the George Hotel , an excellent repast being provided by

the hostess , Mrs . Guiver . The usual Masonic toasts were proposed and drunk , and the post-prandial proceedings were much enlivened by some vocal music by Bros . C . Osmond , J . J . C Turner , R . O . Coombs , Rev . W . Morgan Jones , and Masters Barton , Nunn , Coombs , Siggers , Coote , and E . Nunn . The tables were adorned with a number of button-hole bouquets , the gift of Miss Philbrick ( sister of

the V . W . D . P . G . M . ) , and a special vote of thanks was passed to that lady for her kindness . Among those present , in addition to those already mentioned , were Bros . Thomas J . Duke , P . M . A ballot was then taken for Mr . David White as a candidate for initiation , and he was declared duly elected . The lodge then proceeded to the election of W . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , M . A ., Prov . G . Chap ., S . W ., was declared elected , and Bro . H . G . F . Wells , P . P . G . P ., was elected Treasurer for the sixteenth time . In consequence of the removal of the

present Tyler from the neighbourhood , Bro . J . M . Farr , P . P . G . S . B . Essex , kindly undertook the temporary duties until a serving brother who was nominated could be initiated ; and the lodge , after expressing appreciation of the 17 years' service of the outgoing Tyler , Bro . F . Jesson , unanimously voted him a pension equal to his present standing remuneration . Bro . Jesson returned thanks , and

expressed his regret at having to give up the lodge after his long service , unbroken by a single absence . Bro . the Rev . Henry Hawkins , M . A ., rector of Crowhurst , 132 , was proposed as a joining member . The W . M . congratulated the lodge on the satisfactory result of the labours of the Committee appointed to superintend the decoration and

improvement of the lodge room , which is now equal to any in the province , and a cordial vote of thanks to them and to Bro . C . Martin for his present of two sets of curtains , and to Bro . VV . C Till for his present of a gas pendant , having been carried with unanimity , the lodge was closed in harmony .

WALTON-ON-THE-NA / ZE . —Arnold Lodge ( No . 1799 ) . —The installation and annual festival of this lodge took place on Wednesday evening , the 27 th ult ., in the Public Hall , which had been specially engaged and p repared , and a goodly number of the brethren attended , including several P . LODGE OF ANTIQUITY ( No . 2 ) . — A very brilliant gathering of this Immemorial Lodge took place on Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., at Freemasons' Hall , under the distinguished presidency of Bro . E . Letchworth , P . G . D ., Bro . Sutherland , M . P ., and Chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Company , was raised to the

Sublime Degree of Master Mason in a most admirable and impressive manner by Bro . Letchworth , and was duly decorated with the jewel of the Royal Order appurtenant to the lodge ; indeed , the whole of the working and ceremonial appeared to give unqualified satisfaction to the numerous company assembled , and Old Antiquity fully maintained under Bro . Letchworth its ancient and high repute for

admirable working . The normal business being over , the lodge was closed until June for its last meeting for the summer . Labour being ended , the brethren proceeded to the social circle , and where , under their excellent and able head , they indeed enjoyed " a feast of reason and the flow of soul . " The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and

received with great heartiness and effect . Bro . C . Barry , G . S ., returned thanks for "The Grand Officers" concisely but ably , and Bro . Puleston , P . M ., M . P ., returned thanks for the numerous visitors in a thoroughly genial and effective speech , which drew down much applause , and was alike appreciated by his brother visitors as by the

members of the lodge . . . Several other toasts having been given and received in the usual hearty manner which is characteristic of Antiquity . the Tyler ' s toast , fitly closed the agreeable programme . Bro . Walls , Installing Master , and Bro . Lardner , D . C , for their services . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth , the usual toasts were given by the W . M . briefly but pertinently . During the evening Bros . Kift , L . and J . Lardner , Herbert , and others musically entertained the brethren , Bro . Kift's

exertions being especially appreciated . careful manner in which he had performed the installation ceremony was carried by acclamation , and the Installing Master expressed the pleasure it afforded him to know that the brethren had appreciated his services . Bro . Jamblin said that the W . M ., in appointing his Treasurer . remarked thatjBro . Noah Martin had discharged the duties of that office efficiently and well for nearly a

quarter of a century and he ( Bro . Jamblin ) thought the time had now arrived when the lodge might very well mark their approval of Bro . Mai tin ' s services . Nothing he was sure could increase Bro . Martin ' s interest in the lodge , but he had great pleasure in proposing that he be presented with a Treasurer ' s jewel . The I . P . M . heartily seconded the proposal , and the VV . M . said he was very pleased that

i . had been made { at the commencement of his year of office . The proposition ' was agreed to unanimously , and Bro . Martin expressed his gratitude . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . At the close the lodge-room was speedily converted into a banqueting-hall , and a large company sat down under the presidency of the VV . M ., Bro . H . H . McNaul . The

usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly proposed and honoured . ¦ In proposing "The Health of the Past Masters , " the VV . M . paid a high compliment to the I . P . M ., Bro . Brock , who had cast such a lustre on the lodge . He had great pleasure in presenting him with a Past Master ' s jewel , which had been unanimously voted by the lodge . He

hoped he might live to wear it for many years , and that it might be handed down to his children as an honourable distinction gained by true worth and merit . The I . P . M ., in reply , said he fully appreciated all the kindness which had been shown to him . During his year of office they had gone along smoothly and pleasantly , there had becn no angry feeling nor a particle of

unkindness manifested in any shape or form , and the support he had received from the Past Masters , officers , and brethren had been all he could have desired . He was also proud of the candidates who had come forward during the year , and he hoped they had appreciated what had been said and done , and that they would take the teachings of Freemasonry to heart and act up to them in and out of the

lodge . He should very much value the jewel which the lodge had given him , and he felt sure his children would never have cause to regret their father ' s connection with the Lodge of Emulation . Bro . Noah Martin also replied on behalf of the Past Masters . Bro . Parish submitted "The Masonic Charities , " and Bro . T . Wills , in reply , spoke of the good work which had

been done during the past year . The W . M . proposed "The Officers of the Lodge , " and said they had all worked ardently and earnestly for the benefit of the Order . The toast was cheerfully acknowledged by Bros . Chapman , S . W . ; Greig , J . W . ; T . Wills , Sec ; N . Martin , Treasurer ; and Bro . Snowden , S . D .

Thc W . M . thanked those brethren who had contributed to the musical part of the entertainment , especially Bros . White and Page , who had arranged everything so nicely . The names of Bros . Kift and Bevan were also mentioned , and the first two responded . Bro . Bray was thanked for the excellent dinner he had provided , and the company soon afterwards separated , having spent a thoroughly enjoyable and profitable evening .

COLCHESTER . —United Lodge ( No . 697 ) . — On Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., the V . W . D . P . G . M . of the Masonic Province of Essex , Bro . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , Recorder of Colchester , visited Colchester for the purpose of installing Bro . John T . Bailey as W . M . of this lodge . There was a large gathering of the members of the lodge and visitors , and the proceedings passed off most

successfully . The installation ceremony was performed in the most perfect and impressive manner by the V . W . D . P . G . Crate , who , in a few well chosen words , spoke of the interest attaching to the photograph , and congratulated the lodge upon the possession of so interesting a memento . On the motion of VV . Bro . T . Eustace , P . M .,

one of the oldest members 01 the lodge , seconded by the W . M ., a vote of thanks was passed to Bro . Col . Burney for his present . A cordial vote of thanks was also passed to V . W . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , D . P . G . M ., G . Reg ., for his kindness in attending and performing the ceremony . Between 40 and 50 brethren afterwards dined together at the George Hotel , an excellent repast being provided by

the hostess , Mrs . Guiver . The usual Masonic toasts were proposed and drunk , and the post-prandial proceedings were much enlivened by some vocal music by Bros . C . Osmond , J . J . C Turner , R . O . Coombs , Rev . W . Morgan Jones , and Masters Barton , Nunn , Coombs , Siggers , Coote , and E . Nunn . The tables were adorned with a number of button-hole bouquets , the gift of Miss Philbrick ( sister of

Duke , P . M . A ballot was then taken for Mr . David White as a candidate for initiation , and he was declared duly elected . The lodge then proceeded to the election of W . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , M . A ., Prov . G . Chap ., S . W ., was declared elected , and Bro . H . G . F . Wells , P . P . G . P ., was elected Treasurer for the sixteenth time . In consequence of the removal of the

present Tyler from the neighbourhood , Bro . J . M . Farr , P . P . G . S . B . Essex , kindly undertook the temporary duties until a serving brother who was nominated could be initiated ; and the lodge , after expressing appreciation of the 17 years' service of the outgoing Tyler , Bro . F . Jesson , unanimously voted him a pension equal to his present standing remuneration . Bro . Jesson returned thanks , and

expressed his regret at having to give up the lodge after his long service , unbroken by a single absence . Bro . the Rev . Henry Hawkins , M . A ., rector of Crowhurst , 132 , was proposed as a joining member . The W . M . congratulated the lodge on the satisfactory result of the labours of the Committee appointed to superintend the decoration and

improvement of the lodge room , which is now equal to any in the province , and a cordial vote of thanks to them and to Bro . C . Martin for his present of two sets of curtains , and to Bro . VV . C Till for his present of a gas pendant , having been carried with unanimity , the lodge was closed in harmony .
