THE RECENT EAST LANCASHIRE FESTIVAL .
On tlie same day that the London and Provincial brethren were engaged at the Crystal Palace , under tlie presidency of Bro . the Right Hon . W . W . B . BEACH , M . P ., Prov . G . Master of Hampshire and the Isle Wight , in the congenial task of
raising the necessary funds for the maintenance of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys—the benelits of which are open to the boys of all Masons under tin * jurisdiction of Grand Lodgeour East Lancashire brethren and their friends met in the Royal
Botanical * Gardens , Old Trafford , Manchester , under the presidency of their own respected chief , Lord STANLEY , M . P ., Prov . G . Master , for the purpose of strengthening the financial
position of their own Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , the benelits of which are restricted to members of tht ; Province , their widows , and their sons and daughters . Both meetings were successful , the Crystal Palace
one in raising the very large , if not the record , total of upwards ol £ ' 23 , 000 , ' while ; the Old Trafford gathering—which was , indeed , the second Quinquennial Festival postponed from last year in consequence of Lord STANLEY ' S absence at the seat

the ¦ Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , at whose Festival , in 18 79 , hc presided as Chairman , and with the assistance of a Board of 294 Stewards , had the satisfaction of knowing he was instrumental in
raising for tbat Charity what in those days was the very large amount of £ 14 , 886 , East Lancashire itself contributing about £ 3500 towards the general total . Towards thc result of the meeting on the 26 th ult ., the Chairman made a personal donation
of £ 100 , while among the principal contributions from individual lodges—every one of which , be it remarked , was represented by one or more Stewards—will be found , as mentioned in our report elsewhere , £ 318 from the Travellers' Lodge , No . 1253 ,
Manchester ; £ 300 from the Palatine Lodge , No . 2447 , Manchester ; £ 277 from the Lodge of Integrity , No . 163 , Manchester ; £ 261 from the Alexandra Lodge , No . 993 ,

attended with results so eminently satisfactory , has been Bro . C . D . CHEETHAM , one of the Grand Deacons of England , a Past Prov . G . Warden of East Lancashire , and Chairman of its Provincial Charity organisation . He it is who has laboured so
hard and so heartily in order to ensure the success of this gathering , and now he has his reward in the knowledge that his labours have not been in vain , and in the—if possible , additional
—respect which is entertained for him both in this Province and generally throughout the English Craft . Him , too , we most cordially congratulate . .

THE FESTIVAL OF THE MARK BENEVOLENT FUND .
The 33 rd Anniversary Festival in behalf of the Mark Benevolent Fund will be celebrated at the Freemasons' Tavern on Wednesday , the ioth instant , under the presidency of Bro . Col . CLIFFORD PROBYN , Past Grand Treasurer , who has rendered
many and great services to Freemasonry in all its branches , but in none has been seen to greater advantage than in the Mark Degree . That he will be supported by an efficient Board of Stewards , and that those Stewards mav be relied upon to use
their best endeavours to swell the total of the contributions to the utmost possible extent cannot be doubted . But , while we are hopeful of a good result , wc are not prepared to expect that thc bi g record Return of last year , when thc Pro Grand Mark
Master presided , and a sum of £ 5113 , obtained by the efforts of a Board of 302 Stewards , was the result . Two such totals in consecutive years would be a surprise to us , though we readily confess , wilh such announcements as have been showered about
us during the last two or three years , we are beginning to be surprised at nothing that i . s raised for the Masonic Institutions . However , next week it will be our privilege to announce the tolal of the Donations and Subscriptions , and then we shall be in a position to state if our forecast has been realised .
It is beyond question that the Fund well deserves all the support it receives . It is divided into three ; branches , one of which is reserved for the relief * of applicants who stand in need
of temporary assistance . Then there is the Educational Branch , which provides for the education and clothing of children of deceased or indigent Mark brethren ; and lastly , there is the Annuity Branch , which provides annuities for deserving Mark
