Masonic Notes .

Next week will be a busy one with thc Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The Finance Committee will meet at Freemasons' Hall on Tuesday , and the Committee of Management on Wednesday , while Thursday will be devoted to the

customary Summer Entertainment to thc residents at lhe Institution at Croydon . This is one of the redletter days of the year in the life of those worthy old folk , and we must all of us hope that the Clerk of the Weather will take this fact into consideration , and demean himself accordingly .

The reader will no doubt notice in our report of the recent annual meeting of the Prov . G . Lodge of Surrey , that announcement was made on the occasion to the effect that Bro . Col . Davis , A . D . C , who was only installed in office as Prov . G . Master last year , has

kindly consented to prrside at next year ' s Festivalof the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . This is good news for the School , as Surrey is a strong Province , which has worked hard and successfully on previous similar occasions , and we may be sure that it will do

its utmost to support its ch \? l . Wc may also mention that the Right Hon . the Fail of Lathom , Prov . G . Master West Lancashire , will take the chair at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls in 1902 .

Masonic Notes.

The Right Hon . the Earl of Radnor was installed Prov . Grand Master and Grand Superintendent of Wiltshire , in succession to his father , the late Earl , at Salisbury , on Wednesday , the 3 rd instant . Subsequently the usual banquet was held , at which full honour was done to the loyal and Masonic toasts .

* » •* During the past 120 years the Province of Durham has been greatly honoured by those appointed to preside over its ceremonies . In 178 7 , in response to a petition from the lodges in the Province , the Grand

Master of England ( H . R . H . the Duke of Cumberland ) appointed Bro . William Henry Lambton , M . P ., to be Prov . Grand Master , and he was duly installed in the chair . Bro . Lambton was succeeded by Sir Ralph Milbanke , Bart ., M . P . for the county , in 1798 ,

and during his tenure of office the foundation-stone of the County Courts was laid by Bro . Sir H . V . Tempest , Bart ., M . P ., who acted as Prov . G . Master

pro tcin ., on the 3 rd July , 1809 , at the head of the Prov . Grand Lodge , attended by the Bishop ( Bar . mington ) , the magistrates , clergy , and gentry of the county .

* # * On retiring from the representation of the county , Bro . Sir Ralph Milbanke resigned the office of P . G . M ., amidst the goodwill and esteem of the Province . His successor was Bro . Sir Ralph Noel , Bart ., who , after

serving two years , was followed by Bro . John George Lambton , M . P . for the county , who was installed 27 th July , 1818 . Under his rule , Masonry flourished in numbers and increased in honour . The P . G . M . in time became the first Earl of Durham , and during his

rule the Province was visited by H . R . H . the Duke of Sussex , Grand Master , and the Lambton Lodge was established . In 1824 , the P . G . M . and his officers installed a former Bro . Sir Matthew White Ridley , Prov . Grand Master for Northumberland . In 1834 ,

with munificent hospitality , the P . G . M . entertained the whole Fraternity at dinner at Lambton Castle . In the same year , the Earl of Durham was appointed Deputy Grand Master of England , which office he resigned on his being appointed Ambassador to the Court of Russia .

« * *» The Earl of Durham died on the 28 th July , 1840 , in the 49 th year of his age . In 1841 Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., was appointed P . G . M ., and in 1845 Bro . John Bowes held the oflice . In 1848 Bro ,

John Fawcett was appointed by the Earl of Zetland , Grand Master , and shortly after was installed by Sir Cuthbert Sharp , Deputy P . G . M . The late Bro . Fawcett ruled the Province with marked success .

and resigned the office in 1880 . During his career he had the high honour , as the oldest P . G . M . in England , of installing as M . W . Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , now his Majesty King Edward VII ., and Protector of Freemasonry .

* * * In 1880 , Bro . the late Marquis of Londonderry , K . P ., was installed as Prov , G . Master at Durham , by the late Lord Lathom , and ruled the Province with much satisfaction to the brethren up to the time of

his death in November , 1884 . In 1885 the late Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., was duly installed , and ably presided over the destinies of the Province until his decease last year . In the interval which has since elapsed his admirable Deputy , Bro . the Rev . Canon

Tristram , D . D ., has been acting Prov . G . Master . Now , Bro . Lord Barnard , of Raby Castle , who was appointed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ( his Majesty the King ) , has been installed as head ol the Province , and will , no doubt , continue the

successful career of Freemasonry in the Province . Bro . Robt . Hudson , the esteemed and honoured Prov . G . Secretary , who held office under the late Marquis of Londonderry and the late Sir Hedworth Williamson ,

holds the same important position under Lord Barnard , and Bro . the Rev . Canon Tristram continues to be the Dep . Prov . G . Master , with the like esteem and goodwill of the Prov . G . Master and the members of the Craft .

* * * It is much to be regretted thit Lord Henniker , wh *) is Prov . Grand Master of the Isle of Man , as well as of Suffolk , was unable to attend the recent annual meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge of the former , and

still more , tint his absence was due to si regrettable a cause as the serious illness of his daughter . IT id his lordship presided on the occasion , he would no doubt have received a cordial welcome from the brethren , who attended in considerable numbers and

failed not to express their warmest sympathy with him in the calamity that had befallen him lately and the grave condition of his daughter . Moreover , he could not have failed to be gratified with the evidence the meeting afforded of the respect entertained for his

predecessor in office and for a deceased Past Deputy Grand Master of the Province . No doubt , too , he would have been gratified with the determination of those present to establish funds for the promotion o f

the Charitable objects of Freemasonry , aid we shall be pleased , indeed , to hear that effect has . been given to the schemes that were proposed . In the meantime , we congratulate Lord Henniker on the progress that is being made in Manx Masonry under his auspices .

* » * Mark Masonry has always fared well in Middlesex . In fhe days when the late Bro . Col . A . B . Cook , was its Prov . G . M ., it greatly distinguished itself , and since the lamented death of that brother it has

prospered equally under its present worthy chief , Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., M . P . Moreover , tbe frequent attendance of the Earl of Euston , M . W . Pro G . M . M . at its annual meetings must be a great encouragement to the Province , while it is no small advantage to even

the ablest and most experienced of the Provincial Rulers in the Mark to have such a respected and popular brothe r in the office of Dep . Prov . G . M . M . as Sir John B . Monckton . We have small doubc that Middlesex will show the generous material of which

it is composed at next week ' s celebration of the Festival in aid of the Mark Benevolent Fund , of which the late Bro . Col . Cook was so staunch a friend and supporter , and for which he rendered such signal service at more than one of its anniversary gatherings .

* » » The printed Report of the Proceedi ngs of the District Grand Mark Lodge of Burma , which has just reached us , contains particulars of the regular Communication which was held at the Freemasons' Hall .

Rangoon , on the 27 th March last . In the unavoidable absence of Bro . J . Copley Moyle , Dist . G . M . M ., his Deputy—Bro . Dr . N . N . Parakh—presided , and appointed and invested the Dist . G . Oflicers for the ensuing year . In the course of the meeting a

resolution congratulating his Majesty King Edward VII . on his accession was passed unanimously , and it was mentioned by the acting Dist . G . Master that his Majesty , though he had resigned the office of

M . W . G . M . 'M . —in which he was succeeded by his brother , the Duke of Connaught—had graciously promised to continue his interest in the Order by accepting the position of Patron .

« » ? The reports appended to the record of the Proceedings show that Mark Masonry in Burma , though not particularly strong in respect of numbers , is strong as regards its efficiency and also financially . The balance

to the credit of the different Funds amounted to close upon 800 rupees . The Returns of all but two of tho lodges had been received , and the warrant for the Bassein Lodge , which was opened under dispensation

in November of last year , had arrived from England and had been forwarded to the W . M . We trust that the District may go en as prosperously , and while retaining all ils present efficiency , may become stronger than it is in the matter of numbers .

We have much pleasure in announcing that Bro . Dr . Charles Forshaw , F . R . S . L ., F . R . H . S ., & c , of Bradford , was last month recommended by the Council of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland for election to the Fellowship of the Society . The 53 rd

annual meeting was held in Galway on Monday last , at which Bro . Dr . Forshaw was unanimously elected a Fellow . His Majesty the . King is a Patron of the society , and its President is Bro . his Grace the Duke of Abercorn , K . G ., F . R . S .

• » It is with very sincere regret that we announce the death of Bro . Col . Charles Lyne , one of the few Prov . Grand Masters whose appointment dates from before 1875 . when the Prince of Wales—now King—was

installed M . W . Grand Master . Our deceased brother ' s patent of appointment as Prov . Grand Master of Monmouthshire bears date the 7 th December , 186 9 , and on thc 27 th January , 18 73 , he was made Grand

Superintendent of the Province . Bro . Col . Lyne was highly respected and will be sorely missed by our Monmouthshire brethren , with whom and the family of the late Prov . Grand Master wc deeply sympathise .
