THE STATUS OF PAST MASTERS . To the Editor of thc "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — Having * been greatly struck with a statement recently made in your paper that 40 provincial Masons , all good men and true , came up to London in a " solid phalanx " to compass the victory of the Past Masters , enlighten the London brethren , and considerably alter the
old landmarks of thc Book of Constitutions , I have set myself to work to try and find out what was the real complaint of such enthusiastic brethren , what was their idea , and what the end they sought to accomplish . Having now , as I think and feel sure , obtained the clue to their views , alike theoretical and practical , I request space in your columns for the appearance of this letter . It seems , from what 1 have been told , that there are three
questions which constitute the motive cause of this " crusade" and this intense desire for change : 1 . The first position taken up by our good " reformers " is this , that " once a Past Master always a Past Master , " wherever he is , wherever he goes . Indeed , they heartily subscribe to Bro . P . G . C , R . J . Simpson's burst of eloquence , who seems to have claimed the unchangeable privileges of a Past Master " north , south , east , and west . " But as the
inevitable accompaniment of " gush , " of an "ad captandum " style of oratory , this view , when looked at constitutionally , is altogether untenable , inasmuch as the Book of Constitutions very wisely makes the possession of the great privileges of a Past Master dependent on active Masonic membership and continued Masonic subscription . The argument , therefore , goes too far and proves too much . If a worthy Past Master forgets for 12 months to
pay his dues to his lodge , he forfeits his position and privilege altogether as a Past Master , and cannot again claim and enter Grand Lodge as a Past Master , unless he has again sat for a year in the chair of King Solomon . It may bc said , indeed , as it is said , "it is very hard to make the possession of this Past Master ' s privilege depend on the paltry payment of subscription to a lodge ; " but so it is , and a very sound and sensible safeguard it is , or
otherwise we should be inundated in England as they are in America , with " unattached " Freemasons , the curse of thc Order there , who swarm by thousands , some of them very often the loudest talkers , and yet Masonically utter "drones" in the Masonic hive . Indeed , they set at defiance the abiding law of Masonry , that work is to be the proof of fraternal affection , and the claim , if there be such a thing as a claim , for reward and
promotion . Grand Lodge has always sought to remedy a reasonable complaint , and remove any practical injustice . All Past Masters , subscribing members of lodges in provinces and districts , though they are not Past Masters of lodges , have " de jure " henceforth a seat in Provincial Grand Lodge , and Past Masters in lodges , in the absence of Past Masters of thc lodge , can take the chair of lodges which they have recently joined , and , indeed , of any lodge .
