The Provincial Grand Lodge having been opened , and the minutes of the last annual meeting , which was held at Northwich , read and confirmed , the roll was called , when it was found that all the provincial officers were present , and that all the thirty-nine lodges in the province were
represented , the number of members of the latter in attendance being 353 . The acting PROV . GRAND MASTER said that in accordance with custom he proposed to make some remarks with respect to the progress of Masonry in the province during the past year . Judging from the attendance and from the documents that had been laid before him , he had to again congratulate the brethren upon the very prosperous state of thingswith one exception , viz ., the absence of their
, revered Provincial Grand Master . ( Applause . ) Lord de Tabley was good enough to see him ( Lord Egerton ) on the previous day , and to give him a letter which he wished should be read to the brethren . He should best fulfil the wish of Lord de Tabley if he at once read that letter , and he thought it ought to be entered upon the minutes of the Prov . Grand Lodge . ( App lause . ) It was as follows : — " My dear Egerton , —lt is with infinite reluctance that I
find ' myself compelled b y continued ill-health to absent myself from Prov . Grand Lodge , and to call upon your kind assistance to preside over the brethren in my stead . I know how ably you will do so , and I know how completely I can depend upon the loyalty and affection of my brethren to support you as my Deputy in the chair . Pray say to them how deeply I deplore not being able to take my place amongst them . Until lately I had hoped to have been able
to do so , but my recovery is very slow . I trust it may please the Great Architect of the Universe to spare mc yet a little while , to continue my efforts for the good of the Craft and the province over which I have such pride and pleasure to rule . ( Applause . ) I know how brightly burns the flame of Freemasonry in the northern portion of my province , and I most deeply and especially regret not being able to meet my brethren
at Stalybridge . Hoping that all will pass off auspiciously , and wishing you all health and prosperity , believe me , sincerel y yours , DE TABLEV . " ( Applause . ) Tbe letter showed that their P . G . M ., although he was physically incapacitated from making any very great exertions , was yet animated with the same kindly feelings and the same anxious desire to promote Freemasonry , as in any previous period of his rule over them . ( Applause . ) They could
onl y trust that he might long bc spared to give them the benefit ** of his influence , his experience , and his noble name , and to preside over them . ( Hear , hoar . ) With regard to the events of the past year he ( Lord Egerton ) thought it could be said of that province as had been said of the nation , "Happy is the nation that has no history . "
• Juring the year there had been no special event to commemorate . Everything had gone on smoothly and Prosperousl y amongst them . The attendance that day showed that all the 39 lodges in the province wcre represented , and the attendance he believed was unusually * arge . He heard with satisfaction one evidence of progress

in the opening of a new Masonic hall in connection with the Cestrian Lodge at Chester . He hoped other lodges would follow that example , for it was very desirable that Masons should meet in a hall especially devoted to Masonic purposes in preference to hotels and other places . ( Hear , hear . ) He was glad to find , from an examination ofthe books and documents laid before him , that the charities had been well supported , and in that respect their
thanks were due to Bro . Piatt , the Chairman , and the members of thc Committee of the Provincial Fund of Benevolence . Thc finances were , he was happy to state , in a satisfactory condition , and he hoped that at a later period Provincial Grand Lodge would be in a position to make a special grant to one of those Charities . He had been furnished with some of the results of their work in connection with the Charities in London ,
and he considered them highly satisfactory . Five boys were being supported at the IVlasonic Boys' School , at a cost of ^ 45 per year each ; five girls at the Girls' School , at a cost of £ 40 each ; six aged Masons were maintained at a cost of £ 240 , and four widows at a cost of £ 128 , making altogether a sum of £ 793 received by the province through the Masonic Charities in London . ( Hear , hear . ) The Cheshire Masonic Educational Institution was still
prosperous , and 25 children were maintained there . Out of the 39 lodges in the province eight only had made no return of gifts or subscriptions towards those excellent Masonic Charities , and he expressed the hope that before another year every lodge would contribute its mite , if not more , in their behalf . He trusted that during the ensuing year Masonry might go on as it had done for so many years under the excellent rule of their Provincial Grand Master , and that he
would be supported , if possible , more warmly than before . The province would not , he trusted , suffer from his continued ill-health , and he felt sure that all would combine with him ( Lord Egerton ) in endeavouring to carry out everything which Lord de Tabley had so well initiated and encouraged during his tenure of office . ( Applause . ) The accounts for the year were presented , and from them it appeared that there was a sum invested of £ 1200 , and
that after contributions had been made to the various charities there remained in the bank £ 206 . The accounts were passed , and the auditors were re-elected . Bro . G . VV . LATHAM proposed as Treasurer for the year Bro . Robinson , of the Cestrian Lodge , Chester . In making the proposition , Bro . Latham referred to the loss Freemasonry in Cheshire had sustained by the death of Bro . Jackson , the late P . G . Treasurer , which had
occurred during the year . Bro . BULLEY seconded the motion . Bro . SLADE , Macclesfield , proposed as a candidate for the office of Treasurer Bro . P . Wadsworth , of Macclesfield . The motion was seconded by Bro . KELT , Stalybridge , and on a vote being taken , Bro . Wadsworth was elected by a large majority . Upon the motion of Bro . LATHAM , seconded by the acting P . G . M ., a resolution expressing condolence with the
family of the late Bro . Jackson was passed . Bro . J . P . PLATT then proposed— " That the sum of 250 guineas be voted out of the funds of the province to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , which , if ' paid this year , will give double votes to the province in perpetuity . " Bro . the Rev . R . HODSON seconded the resolution , which was passed unanimously . The Provincial Grand Officers for the ensuing year were
then invested as follows -. Bro . Major Cephas J . Howard , 321 ... Prov . G . S . W . „ John B . Deakin , 537 Prov . G . J . W . „ Rev . Richard Hodgson , 1045 ( re- ~ v „ Rcv . Tanon R . Holygate-Brown' ; [ Prov * G * Cha Ps * 140 S )

J After some further business thc brethren of the
Stalybridge lodges presented to the Prov . Grand Lodge , as a memento of its visit to the town , a bible containing an appropriate inscription . The volume is in black letter , and bears date 1620 . The gift was accepted , and on the motion of the acting P . G . M . a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Stalybridge brethren . The Prov . Grand Lodge was then closed , and the brethren , headed by the Stalybridge Borough Band , went
in procession to St . Paul ' s Church , where a sermon was preached by the Rev . Canon Brown , P . G . Chaplain , and an offertory taken on behalf of the District Infirmary and the Provincial Fund of Benevolence . In the evening a banquet took place in the Town Hall . The musical performances , both in the church and at the banquet , were under the direction of Bro . Enos Andrew , the reappointed Prov . G . Organist , and were of an
exceptionally high class character . The anthem at church was Dr . Stainer ' s " Love Divine , " with Tour's chorus " Blessed be the Lord for evermore . " At the church service the vocalists included Madame Farrar-Hyde , Airs . Hilton , the Misses Bently , Twedale , Travis , and Goddard , Messrs . John Hilton , H . Holgate , and Bros . Mark Stafford , Ballam , Bentley , Nathaniel Dumville , and J . D . Smith . The five latter brethren sang the various
morccaux at the banquet . Two speciai features in the programme call for notice and commendation , viz ., a triumphal march , dedicated to Lord Egerton , V . W . Dep . P . G . M ., and a new song , entitled " The Master ' s Toast , " dedicated to Bro . Lord de Tabley , R . W . P . G . M ., both composed for the occasion by Bro . Enos Andrew , Prov . G .
Org . The words of the song were written by Bro . J . H . Burton , of Dukinfield . It has a p leasing refrain , and is likel y to become popular at provincial and installation meetings . 1 'he proceedings throughout thc day were conducted in a most admirable and masterly manner by Bro . Herbert Finch , Prov . G . D . of C , who , notwithstanding his arduous

labours , was perfectl y cool and self-possessed . When it is considered what an amount of mental anxiety is necessarily created by arranging and conducting such a formidable programme as that on Wednesday , nothing but admiration can fail to be elicited for such zoal . t .-irf--. „ , ! < = 4 f-nr . cccc' * ™
. . , as Bro . Finch exhibited , and always exhibits on similar occasions , and if any doubt existed of the appreciation in which he is held by his Cheshire brethren , such doubt would immediately removed by the applause from every part of the hall which greeted the announcement of his reappointment to the office of Prov . G . D . of C .

G . D . of C .
