The lodge having been formally opened , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed , after which the Auditors' report , showing the finances of the lodge to be in a prosperous condition , was received and adopted . Bro . Evans was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master

Mason , and Bros . Wakeley and Rowbotham passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft . Bro . Alfred Arthur Johnston . S . W ., was then presented as W . M . elect and was impressively installed into the cheir by the Installing Officer , Bro . Flattely , P . M . The W . M . then appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . Wm . E . The usual addresses having been ably rendered by Bro . Flattely , P . M ., the W . M . initiated Mr . James Craigen into Freemasonry in a manner that augured well for the working of the lodge during the forthcoming year . Bro . Tayler , P . M ., was elected a Trustee to the Benevolent Fund , and

his brother afterwards proposed that a jewel be presented to Bro . Beckham , Secretary , as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by the lodge , and as a slight token in recognition of his valued and indefatigable services during the past ten years . Bro . Hunt , P . M ., seconded the proposition , and after alluding to the active services rendered by Bro . Beckham , expressed a hope that he would soon be restored to health and would be with them for many years

to come . This was carried unanimously , and was acknowledged by Bro . Beckham , who said it was a kindness he should never forget . The lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned to banquet , at the conclusion of which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , including "The Oueen and the Craft , " "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " M . W . G . M ., " and "The Grand Officers , Present

and Past . " The toast of " The Worshipful Master" was proposed by Bro . Coulthard , I . P . M ., who said he hoped the brethren would receive it with as much cordiality and pleasure as he had in proposing it . They had all been gratified to see the manner in which their W . M . had performed his work that evening , and how anxious he was to carry out every detail in a satisfactory manner , and tht-y would all agree with him

if hesaid that he was sure they had installed a good W . M . into the chair . He did not think it necessary to make any further remarks with regard to this toast , but would content himfelf with asking them to rise and drink a very very good health to Aeir W . M . Bro . A , A . Johnston , W . M ., in reply , said he was sincerely grateful to the I . P . M . for the kind i- -. -ner in he had proposed the toast , and to the brethic 1 for the

heartiness with which they had received it . It was a very great encouragement to him to know he had their support , and he hoped they would continue to assist him in the duties of the chair throughout his year of office . He would do his best to carry out the duties of W . M . to their satisfaction and the credit of the lodge . The Worshipful Master then proposed "The I . P . M ., " and expressed the pleasure he felt at being permitted to

present Bro . Coulthard with the jewel that 1 •¦ ' b' -cn voted by the lodge in recognition of the able manner in which he had conducted the business of the chair during the past year . They all hoped to see him with them for many years to come , and they congratulated him on his successful term of ofiice . Bro . Thomas Coulthard , I . P . M ., said he scarcely knew how to thank them for their kindness . He had been

extremely anxious to instal his successor himself , but circumstances had occurred which made him abstain from perfoiming the ceremony , for he regarded it as a very serious one , and one that when rendered , ought to be given in the manner they hail heard that evening . With regard to the Very handsome jewel presented to him , and for which he heartily thanked them , assured them he should have very much pleasure in wearing it , and trusted it would never

disgrace the lodge . "The Installing Master and Past Masters" was next given b y the W . M ., who referred to the very impressive manner in which the installation ceremony had been rendered that evening by Bro . Flatteley , to whom their best thanks were due . He was glad to see so many Past Masters present to whom he could look for assistance whilst he occupied the chair . Bro . Flattely , P . M ., responded , and referred to the

pleasure it had afforded him to work the installation ceremony on that occasion , for it was one in which he took special delight . The Past Masters had the interest of the lodge at heart , and hoped to see the lodge continue progressing . Bro . Hunt , P . M ., as the senior P . M ., said he had to tender his warmest thanks for the manner in which the toast had been given and received . It was now ten years since the lodge was founded , and he was at that time a very

young Mason . But , notwithstanding this , he was asked to be one of the founders , and he was honoured with the request that he would act as first W . M . He never expected ||\ ,- . sucr a lodge as now existed , and it was wonderful to think it was but the growth of ten years . The lodge had grown not only in numbers , but in the excellency of its working and its charitable deeds . He was proud to see the array of Past Masters on his rightand he hoped they would

, be spared to see them extend still further down the table . „ ™ -W . H . Baker , W . M . 1446 , I . P . Clowes stated , amidst hearty applause , that though removing to another county , he should take as deep an interest as ever in Freemasonry in Essex , and should be frequently amongst them . Between 40 and 50 brethren subsequently dined together at the Great Eastern Hotel , an excellent banquet being well

put on by the manager , Bro . Grew . After dinner , the usual Masonic toasts were proposed and heartily drunk . Bro . Hales , in proposing "The Health of the Mayor , " expressed the pleasure he felt in having introduced his worship into Freemasonry that day , and trusted that he would take an interest in the lodge . Bro . Hales also remarked that Bro . Vaux was the second Chief Magistrate he had introduced into the Craft .

Ihe Mayor , in responding , said he had for some time wished to become a Mason , and follow in the footsteps of his father , who was a member of the Star in the East Lodge . He was very gratified at the reception he had met with , and trusted to become a useful member of the lodge . The Worshipful Master proposed " Ihe Health of the I . P . M ., " and remarked upon the excellent manner in which Bro . Sanders had fulfilled his duties during the year . He

then , in the name of the lodge , presented to Bro . Sanders a handsome P . M . ' s jewel , with the hope that he might long be spared to wear it . Bro . Sanders returned thanks . Other toasts followed , and some excellent vocal and instrumental music added to the enjoyment of the gathering , much of the success of which was due to the untiring and genial exertions of Bro . The Worshipful Master then said that after Bro . Wm . Nott , P . M ., had last year been elected to the office of Treasurer instead of Secretary—on his expressing a wish to be relieved of the duties of the latter , as he lound them to much for him—the members of the lodge met and

resolved to show their esteem and their recognition of his services , for 17 years as Secretary , by subscribing for a Past Secretary ' s jewel . This , with an illuminated address had now been completed , and the W . M . on behalf of the brethren , asked Bro . Nott ' s acceptance of them . The W . M . remarked that Bro . Nott had at all times most willingly given his time and abilities for the good of the lodge , he had held high office in the Craft , Royal Arch , and

Mark Masonry , and in many other Degrees which the W . M . did not understand , and he hoped that Bro . Nott would be spared many years to wear the jewel , and to give the lodge the benefit of his Masonic knowledge . Bro . W . H . Bush , I . P . M ., who had carried out the arrangements , spoke of the great pleasure it had given him to do so , arid of many warm and kind expressions towards their late Secretary , and of regret at not being able to be

present that evening , which had been sent him by members of the lodge and others . Bro . Mann , P . M . C 32 , expressed the great pleasure it had given him to be present to bear testimony to the high estimation in which Uro . Nott's services to Freemasonry were held outside his own lodge , and said that had not the subscription been confined to the Devizes lodges , many others would have joined in it .

Bro . William Nott , in thanking the brethren , said that until the W . M . had that evening risen and addressed him he had net the slighest idea that anything of the kind was contemplated , he could only say , taken entirel y by surprise as he was , that this expression of the feelings of the brethren would mark one of the brightest spots in his

Masonic career . He heartily thanked the brethren for that beautiful jewel , which he should treasure during the remainder ot his life , not for its intrinsic value ( great though that was ) , but as a reminder of the affectionate regard and kindly good feeling of the subscribers as so warmly expressed in the words of the address then before him . The jewel , a valuable one in ; ro ! d and enamel , was

„ ™ -W . H . Baker , W . M . 1446 , I . P . M . 2030 , replied for Ihe Visitors , " and said that it seemed to him that he was in his own lodge , for wherever he turned he saw the 'aces of old Masonic friends .

Other toasts followed , and some excellent vocal and instrumental music added to the enjoyment of the gathering , much of the success of which was due to the untiring and genial exertions of Bro . resolved to show their esteem and their recognition of his services , for 17 years as Secretary , by subscribing for a Past Secretary ' s jewel .
