FREEMASONRY IN SHEFFIELD .

In continuation of the excellent series of lectures recently given by Bro . R . F . Gould , P . G . D ., in Yorkshire , a lecture was given by him at Sheffield on the 19 th ult ., the subject being "The Degrees of Pure and Ancient Freemasonry . " The lecture , which was given

with the approval of the Masters of the six Sheffield lodges , excited a good deal of interest , and the drawingroom of the Hall of the Ancient Cutlers' Company was well filled . The chair was taken by Bro . Harold Thomas , W . M . 296 , Prov . G . Registrar of West Yorkshire . Amongst those present were Bros . Wm . Boden ,

The LECTURER having been introduced by the Chairman , gave an interesting retrogressive sketch of Masonic Degrees from the present time to 1717 , quoting and explaining the old Regulations of 1717 , and discussing the historical view of the old

Second and present Third Degrees . The history of the Master ' s Degree was then considered by the lecturer , who gave much interesting information with respect to the Installed Master ' s Degree . Referring particularly to the provision of the Act of Union that " Pure and Ancient Freemasonry consisted of Three Degrees and no more , " Bro . Gould concluded his lectnre .

An interesting discussion followed , in which Bros . J . BENNEY , P . M ., H . J . GARNETT , P . M ., and others took part , after which Bro . GARNETT , P . M ., whilst not entirely agreeing with the lecturer in some of his views with regard to the higher Degrees , proposed a cordial vote of thanks to the lecturer .

Bro . HAMSON , P . M ., seconded , and the resolution was carried . The LECTURER having acknowledged the vote of thanks , the meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman , and to Bro . Benney for the arrangements he had made for the lecture .

English And Scottish Masonry.

Nicholas Lodge , No . 1676 , presented an imposing appearance on the evening of VVednesday , the 19 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Grainger-street , Newcastle-on-Tyne , when about 250 English brethren assembled to welcome their brethren of St . David's Lodge , No . 3 6 ( S . C ) , on the occasion of their return fraternal visit . Bro . Thos . Lewens , W . M ., presided over the proceedings . The

deputation from Edinburgh consisted of Bros . Dr . J . Robertson , R . W . M . j David Cuthbert , S . S . C , I . P . M . ) D . Taylor , P . M . j Thomas Young , P . M . ; Reginald Pickett , S . After dinner the deputation proceeded to the lodge room , where they were received in true Masonic style by their English brethren , and amongst the Provincial Grand Officers of Northumberland present to do them honour were Bros . Lodge and his officers , and gave much satisfaction to the visitors . At the close of this ceremony , the W . M ., Bro . T . Lewens , presented to St . David's Lodge an illuminated address with the names of the deputation from St . Nicholas which visited Edinburgh in October last , and which was embellished round the frame work with portraits of himself , the I . P . M ., the D . of C , the Senior and Junior Wardens , the Senior and Junior Deacons , and the R . W . M . of St .

David's Lodge . In doing so Bro . LEWENS made a short and graceful speech , expressing on behalf of himself and the brethren of St . Nicholas Lodge the pleasure felt at the visit paid by their Scottish brethren . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . R . H . HOLMES , also on behalf of the Provincial Grand Master of Northumberland , Bro . Sir M . W . Ridley , gave the visitors a hearty welcome to Tyneside .

In continuation of the excellent series of lectures recently given by Bro . R . F . Gould , P . G . D ., in Yorkshire , a lecture was given by him at Sheffield on the 19 th ult ., the subject being "The Degrees of Pure and Ancient Freemasonry . " The lecture , which was given

with the approval of the Masters of the six Sheffield lodges , excited a good deal of interest , and the drawingroom of the Hall of the Ancient Cutlers' Company was well filled . The LECTURER having been introduced by the Chairman , gave an interesting retrogressive sketch of Masonic Degrees from the present time to 1717 , quoting and explaining the old Regulations of 1717 , and discussing the historical view of the old

Second and present Third Degrees . The history of the Master ' s Degree was then considered by the lecturer , who gave much interesting information with respect to the Installed Master ' s Degree . Referring particularly to the provision of the Act of Union that " Pure and Ancient Freemasonry consisted of Three Degrees and no more , " Bro . Gould concluded his lectnre .

An interesting discussion followed , in which Bros . J . BENNEY , P . M ., H . J . GARNETT , P . M ., and others took part , after which Bro . GARNETT , P . M ., whilst not entirely agreeing with the lecturer in some of his views with regard to the higher Degrees , proposed a cordial vote of thanks to the lecturer .

Bro . HAMSON , P . M ., seconded , and the resolution was carried . The LECTURER having acknowledged the vote of thanks , the meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman , and to Bro . Benney for the arrangements he had made for the lecture .

David's Lodge an illuminated address with the names of the deputation from St . Nicholas which visited Edinburgh in October last , and which was embellished round the frame work with portraits of himself , the I . P . M ., the D . of C , the Senior and Junior Wardens , the Senior and Junior Deacons , and the R . W . M . of St .

David's Lodge . In doing so Bro . LEWENS made a short and graceful speech , expressing on behalf of himself and the brethren of St . Nicholas Lodge the pleasure felt at the visit paid by their Scottish brethren . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . R . H . HOLMES , also on behalf of the Provincial Grand Master of Northumberland , Bro . Sir M . W . Ridley , gave the visitors a hearty welcome to Tyneside .
