The Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , having concluded their visit to Lord and Lady Hastings , at Melton Constable , returned to Sandringham at the close of last week , and were present at Divine service in Sandringham Church on Sunday last .
The 31 st Annual Exhibition of the National Dog Show , was opened at Curvon Hall , Birmingham , on Saturday last , and remained open till Thursday evening . There was a falling off in the number of entries as compared with last year , but the quality of the exhibits was of a very high standard .
The Common Council of London have voted £ 3000 for the purpose of completing the purchase of over 30 acres of land , comprising some fine timber and an ornamental lake , at Higham Park . This will greatly improve Epping Forest at its narrowest part , and conduce greatly to the enjoyment of the public .
The Duke and Duchess of Connaught , accompanied by their children , and attended by Colonel Egerton , arrived at Windsor Castle on Monday , on a visit to her Majesty . They wt re met on arrival at the station by the Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , with whom they drove to the castle .
The Hon . Dudley Leigh , eldest surviving son and heir of Bro . Lord Leigh , Prov . G . Master of Warwickshire , was married to Miss Helene Forbes Beckwith , of New York , in St . George's Hanover-square , on Saturday last . The bridegroom was attended by Hro . Lord Dungarvan as best man . In the course of the afternoon the newly-married pair left for Fonthill Abbey , near Salisbury , the residence of the bridegroom ' s uncle and aunt , Bro . Sir Michael and Lady Octayia Shaw-Stewart .
On Tuesday and Thursday next , at a performance of "The Tempest" in St . George's Hall by the Irving Amateur Dramatic Club , additional interest is attached to the performance from the fact that Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan ' s music will be performed for , it is believed , the first time in London in connection with the play . The band and chorus will be composed chiefly of pupils of the Royal Academy of Music , the part of Ariel being assigned to Miss Kate Johnstone , a student of the same institution .
An earnest appeal to the public for support is being made b y the Chairman and Board of Management of the Licensed Victuallers' Asylum , in Asylum-road , Old Kentroad . The building comprises 170 houses , besides a chapel and court and board room . The expenditure , which is
raised almost entirely by voluntary contribution , amounts to about £ 9000 a year . 'The number of residents maintained is 220 , and the benefits of the Charity have recently been extended by the grant of weekly allowances of five shillings each to 50 out of the 90 candidates for admission .
The promoters of the South-West London Polytechnic Institute are pressing forward with their scheme . Already £ 32 , 000 out of the £ 50 , 000 required to meet the same amount promised by the Charity Commissioners has been raised , and it is expected that the balance of £ 18 , 000 will

Count George Waldstein , who died within three months of the death of his young wife , Countess Pasqualine Metternich , has left his whole fortune , which amounts to about half a million florins , to them . A home is to be founded with the money . The young couple were married five years , but left no children .

Midwinter , the well-known Gloucester cricketer , lies dead at Melbourne . Poor fellow , he was only in his 39 th year , and early in June he became hopelessly insane . Midwinter achieved many commendable feats . With Barnes ( the Notts professional ) he assisted to make a record for the longest partnership during a match at Lord ' s as oh June 1 , 1 SS 2 , playing for M . C . C . and Ground against Leicestershire , the pair put on 454 .
Bro . J . D . Allcroft ( Treas . ) , presided at the annual meeting of the Royal Hospital for Incurables on the 28 th ult . The receipts for the year were £ 51 , 590 , the principal items of revenue being—annual subscriptions , £ 7472 ; life subscriptions , £ 5175 ; donations , £ 1941 ; bequests , £ 26 , 210 ;
and dividends on invested funds , £ 2657 . The debit side of the account showed that , exclusive of £ 9000 on deposit and £ Sooo invested , there remained in hand at the close of September a balance of £ 5708 , of which £ 3322 was required for the purpose of paying accounts and pensions .
The installation banquet of the Albert Edward Lodge , No . 1714 , at Camberley , Surrey , on the 26 th ult ., came to a painful termination . Bro . E . Nichols , P . M ., had proposed the health of the visitors , when he suddenly became faint , and retired to an adjoining room , where he received
medical attendance , but died shortly afterwards from heart disease . The deceased had for many years been manager at the Farnborough depot of Messrs . Simonds and Co ., brewers , of Reading . He was 45 years of age , widely known , and much esteemed .
On Monday , the 24 th ult ., the remains of Bro . W . Lean , the much respected Tyler of the Boscawen Lodge , who died on the Friday night previous , after only a few days ' illness , were consigned to their last resting place in Chacevvater churchyard . Although the weather was very stormy , and during the ceremony rain and hail fell in torrents , there
was a large attendance of brethren and others . His sword and collar of office and his Provincial apron rested on the coffin . He was a Past Prov . Grand Tyler . On the completion of the service by Bro . the Rev . R . F . Fraser-Frizell , the vicar , the brethren walked past , and each dropped a sprig of acacia into the grave .
A meeting of the Committee entrusted with the arrangements in connection with the annual Masonic ball in aid of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institute , at the Town Hall , on the 13 th January , was held last evening at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool , under the presidency of Bro . Dr . Clarke , P . P . G . R ., the Vice-Chairman of the
