W . M ., Bro . Pattison . Bro . VVm . Campbell was afterwards passed to the degree of a F . C . by the I . P . M ., Bro . J . C . Moor . The lodge was suitably draped in mourning , owing to the decease during the past month of Bro . Henry Tonkinson , P . M . and Treasurer , one of the most valuable members of the lodge , who by his genial bearing and pleasant , manly disposition had earned the regard of all the brethren . The vacant Treasurer's chair was suitably draped ; the collar and jewel of the oflice hung over the front of it . Suitable reference was first made to this
mournful event by The W . M ., who said : Brethren , it is my mournful duty to-night to remind you of the great loss we have sustained since our last lodge was held . 1 was unable to be present on that occasion , owing to illness , a circumstance 1 shall always regret , since that proved to be the last opportunity
we ever had in this world of seeing and conversing with our deeply lamented Bro . Henry Tonkinson . During the course of the Friday night following that meeting our esteemed brother was stricken down with paralysis , with the result which we all sincerely deplore . In Bro . Tonkinson 1 feel that I have not only lost a brother Mason , but a friend , with whom I have been on the most affectionate terms from
boyhood . I am very sure that his loss will be long felt in the Palatine Lodge . I submit to you the following resolution , which will be supported by several of the brethren : — "That this lodge deeply laments the decease of Bro . Henry Tonkinson , P . M . and Treasurer , and hereby resolves that the following letter of condolence be forwarded to the widow of our late brother : —
"' Palatine Lodge , No . 97 , Sunderland , " ' February 12 th , 1885 . "' Dear Madam , " * We , the Worshipful Master , officers , and brethren of the Palatine Lodge of Freemasons , in general lodge assembled , beg to express our deep sorrow at the bereavement occasioned by the sad and sudden death of your beloved husband , our esteemed and deeply lamented
Past Master and Treasurer , and to offer you and each of the members of your family our sincere and heartfelt sympathy with you in your sorrow . " ' By his unvarying kindness , and the great interest he evinced in all matters pertaining to the welfare of our lodge , lie gained the esteem and affection of the brethren . " ' VVe therefore respectfully offer our sincere condolence and sympathy , and pray earnestly that the Almighty may
support and comfort you , and the members of your family , in your grief and affliction . " ' I remain , dear Madam , yours sincerely , '" JOSEPH ROBSON PATTISON . '" Bro . E . D . Davis , P . P . G . J . W ., said : A high authority taught us that " Man is born to sorrow , " and in the Province of Durham we have of late had reason to fully realise the profound truth conveyed in this observation . Not very
long since we lost our highly respected P . G . M ., Bro . John Fawcett , who was alike invaluable as a Mason and irreproachable as a man . The sudden demise of our lamented P . G . Sec , Bro . Crookes , followed soon after . Then an esteemed and beloved member of the Royal Family , who had done us the honour of a visit , was , without the briefest warning , removed from the scene of his labours . We had scarcely recovered from the effect of this severe
shock when our late highly-respected P . G . M ., the Marquis of Londonderry , was called from us . Now the Palatine Lodge in particular has greater cause to mourn in consequence of the heavy loss they have sustained by the sudden death of Bro . Henry Tonkinson , P . M . and Treasurer . He felt assured that the sorrow with which his heart was charged was reciprocated by every brother present . The services of their late brother could scarcely be estimated in
any spoken eulogiums , * his genial presence in the lodge , his assiduity in duty , his pver-willing and valuable help endeared him to all . Their thoughts must necessarily be turned to the heavy sorrow which had fallen upon their late brother ' s family . He felt assured that there was not a brother present who would not willingly mitigate or alleviate that sorrow if he could . It was impossible to picture the members of that bereaved family looking at the empty
chair of the head of that household without forcibly realising the anguish of their reflections . He thought that if the expression of the profound sympathy of the brethren there assembled could be conveyed to the family of their late lamented brother it might afford a solace to , if not an alleviation of , their poignant sorrow . His own emotions were too deep to permit him to extend his remarks . He felt confident that the brethren understood his present
feelings , and trusted that the expression of their profoundest sympathy would afford to those so sorely afflicted the highest consolation they could offer . Bro . J . C Moor , I . P . M ., seconded the motion of the W . M . After the eloquent address of Bro . Davis , few further words were needed , as all endorsed the remarks that had been made . Their late Bro . Tonkinson had become endeared to them all ; his presence at their
meetings was always a pleasure to the lodge ; his valuable help in the transaction of the business of the lodge they much prized . It had been a p leasure to him ( Bro . Moor ) to be Secretary during Bro . fonkinson ' s Mastership , and when he in turn became Master , it had been a pleasure and a source of congratulation to all that Bro . Tonkinson was elected Treasurer . He was present in the best of health at their last lodge meeting , and none of them could for a
moment have anticipated such a sad and sudden loss as his death had occasioned—a loss that would long be painfully felt in the Palatine Lodge . At his funeral the W . M . and officers and brethren had assembled ; a wreath , in token of their regard had been placed upon his remains by the W . M ., and the touching expression of condolence and sympathy with his widow and family would be a fitting
mark of the grief which all felt at that bereavement which was common to them all , but which would be especially keen to his relatives . The resolution was then carried amid solemn silence . The lodge was afterwards closed in due form . " An honoured . memory " was afterwards silently observed , and the vocal harmony was dispensed with at the after proceedings .

Sedcole , | W . M . 1119 ; J . Nelson , I . P . M . So ; J . G . Kirtley , VV . M . 949 ; and others . The lodge was duly opened by the VV . M ., Bro . J , R . Pattison . The ballot having been successfully taken at the previous meeting for Mr . George Eunson , the candidate was duly introduced and initiated into Masonry by the
W . M ., Bro . Pattison . Bro .
