M . j and the brethren bv Bro . W . Bostock , P . M ., P . P . G . P .

There being no further business the lodge was closed , and the brethren afterwards celebrated the Festival of St . John with a banquet , which , when finished , the usual toast list was proceeded with . The W . Master proposed the preliminary toasts , which were all duly honoured . Bro . Wm . Lyon , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the W . M ., " said he did so with very great pride and

satisfaction . The W . M . was known to a great many Masons outside the Avon Lodge , as well as to all in it , and by each and every one he was highly esteemed . He had had the pleasure of addressing Bro . McKellen at the commencement of the installation ceremony , and of pointing out those distinguished virtues and characteristics that qualified a brother for the office of Master . Alt those qualities he was

persuaded Bro . McKellen possessed in an eminent degree , and he therefore felt proud to hand over the government of the Avon Lodge to such a brother , because there was no doubt the work would be carried on with great advantage to the lodge . The brethren had seen on several previous occasions how well Bro . McKellen could perform the various ceremonies , and therefore they could but feel as

he ( Bro . Lyon ) did that the welfare and success of the lodge was thoroughly assured in such competent hands . The toast was received with enthusiasm , and the W . M . ' s health heartily drunk , after which Bro . Seymour Jackson sang , in finished style , "The Message . " The W . M ., on rising to respond , was loudly cheered , and in reply said he felt deeply moved at the kind and

enthusiastic manner the brethren had received the toast , and the eloquent manner in which his predecessor had proposed it . No man could stand in the position he did , amongst 70 or 80 brethren more or less distinguished , and feel unmoved when hearing the toast of his health proposed and received in such a manner as his had been , and he would not indeed give much for the man who could remain untouched and

totally callous at such a time , lt was almost impossible for him to respond to the toast in such a manner as it should be responded to . Thel . P . M . had a right to feel very particular as to who came into his place in the lodge . It was no ordinary position for a brother to occupy , who was elected Master of the Avon Lodge , and he presumed he was not wrong in saying that the lodge was , at least ,

second to none in the Province of East Lancashire , and if they took its work during the past year as a criterion of the strength of its position , he should say it would rank first in the Province . The I . P . M . had gone through the work of his period in such a manner that he ( Bro . McKellen ) felt the responsibility and the honour which the brethren had conferred

upon him in asking him to follow his footsteps . He felt it the more because two months ago he had not the remotest conception that such an honour was to be conferred upon him . He had not come from the S . W . 's chair into that of W . M . through any succession to which he might be entitled to look forward , but it had simply arisen , as he believed , from the kindly feeling that the brethren

entertained towards him , and which they had been anxious to display now that an opportunity had occurred . To a certain extent the satisfaction he felt at being placed in such an honourable position was tinged to a very great degree with regret , for the reason that a very distinguished , worthy , and highly-valued brother , who was fairly entitled to it , had been compelled through the ruling of Prov . Grand Lodge to forego the natural ambition of presiding

over two lodges in one year . At the time Bro . Allitt was elected W . M . there was not a doubt in the mind of any member but that he would have been duly installed , and if such had been the case he ( Bro . McKellen ) would have been one of his most sincere helpers ; but as it happened Bro . Allitt had been installed VV . M . of another lodge , and , as previously stated , was not permitted to preside over

another at the same period . All the same , however , the Avon Lodge would mend matters as soon as possible . As far as he ( Bro . McKellen ) was concerned , the position he had undertaken was one the duties of which he was somewhat afraid of undertaking . At the same time the knowledge that he was surrounded by able and efficient officers , who would render him every assistance , gave him additional

confidence , and he assured the brethen he would do his utmost to merit the trust reposed in him . Before sitting down the W . M . proposed in eulogistic terms "The Health of the I . P . M , Bro . Lyon , " who had won the esteem and kind regard of every brother in the lodge , and if it could have been done with any degree of comfort he ( Bro . McKellen ) would have felt pleased if Bro . Lyon could

have continued his tenure ot office until the end of the present year , and it gave him great pleasure to present the I . P . M . with a gold jewel as a token of the esteem in which he was held by his brethren , trusting he might be long spared to wear it amongst them . The toast was heartily drunk , and Bro . Lyon returned thanks in appropriate language . The Worshipful Master afterwards proposed " The

Visitors , " and in so doing remarked that it was very gratifying to have the honour of being installed before a board of no less than 29 Installed Masters . Bros . Major Allison , P . M . 993 , George Hunt , P . M . and Sec . 1009 , and Seymour Jackson , Stwd . 2156 , replied . Other toasts were proposed , and a very short , though enjoyable evening was spent . The P . M . 's jewel was specially manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester .

CROOK . —Crook Lodge ( No . 201 9 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on the 25 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , for the purpose of installing Bro . John Graham into the Worshipful Master ' s chair . The lodge was opened by Bro . W . Arrowsmith , the retiring W . M ., who conducted the ordinary business of the lodge . Bro . Thomas Hardy , I . P . M ., then performed the installation ceremony . Bro . Graham appointed his officers as follows : Bros . W .

Arrowsmith , I . P . M . j E . Milburn , S . W . j R . VV . Wraith , J . W . j Rev . S . Newsome , Chap , j R . Proud , Treas . ; J . Joel , Sec . j R . Dawson , S . D . j G . Emmerson , J . Owing to the very severe weather , the number of visiting

brethren was not so large as on previous occasions , but there were present Bros . W . Crawtord , W . M . 1121 , P . P . G . O . j J . Probert , P . M . 424 J C . G . Randall , 4 S 1 J T . Banks , J . D . 1121 J John Reed , P . M . 1121 ; and John Barnet , 1121 . A banquet was afterwards held at the Surtees Hotel . A splendid jewel was presented to the retiring Worshipful Master .

John Graham into the Worshipful Master ' s chair . The lodge was opened by Bro . W . Arrowsmith , the retiring W . M ., who conducted the ordinary business of the lodge . Bro . Thomas Hardy , I . P .
