thing that could be desired . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to . In responding to "The Prov . Grand Officers , " Bro . the Rev . R . W . Perry-Circuit made a most flowing and eloquent speech , highly complimenting the members on the high standard they had attained , and he assured them the Drama had his sympathies and support . Bro . T . H . Birch , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of

the W . M ., " remarked his present position entitled him to propose it and he did so with the greatest degree of pleasure , for many , many years the friendship had existed between himself and Bro . Rnmsiy , and he was delighted to see him in the in"sl honourable position the Craft could bestow upon him , and ne was perfectly sure he would give entire satisfaction , although the duties were onerous , by the very fact that it was a new lodge . He was quite sure what

he had left to be done would be done well . Bro . Ramsay ' s word was an ample guarantee ; his bond on all occasions was his word . He did not wish to bore the brethren with a long speech , although he could speak and say even more than he had already dons of the high reputation of their W . M ., and he asked them to drink to his health , which was done with great enthusiasm . Bro . Ramsay , in responding , said any words of his would

fail to express his feelings on that occasion . He felt it a very proud position for him to be the Master of that lodge . It had been his desire since he came to Manchester to form a lodge of that description , and with the assistance of many friends and brethren he had been able to accomplish that end . He was indeed delighted to see it so well supported and encouraged by so many professionals , who were now members of it . He thanked them all for rallying round

him , and he felt that was an event in his life . No efforts on his part should be wanting , he assured them , to make it a further success , and he should use the utmost of his ability for the welfare of the lodge , and he was quite certain he should have the assistance of his officers . He trusted in time it might be one of the leading lodges in Manchester , and thanked them all for the way they had received the toast . He had now a very pleasing duty to perform and

that was to propose "The Health of Bro . T . H . Birch , the l . P . M . " He could assure them no one could have been deputed to perform the duty who would do it in a more heartfelt way . Bro . Birch had held a position which he would appreciate as first Master of the Manchester Dramatic Lodge . No one in Manchester had ever worked harder for the high attainment of the theatrical world . He

had always looked upon Bro . Birch as a genuine friend . As l . P . M . he had done his work well , and must be held as an example . It would be a difficulty to be as great a success as he had been . It was with some diffidence he ( Bro . Ramsay ) consented to take the chair , and he still felt its success must be attributed to Bro . Birch , and for that purpose he had great pleasure in presenting him with a Past Master ' s jewel , and he hoped he would live long to

wear it . Bro . Birch expressed his thanks , and said he hoped in the future to be of use in the lodge . Should the W . M . or any successor require his assistance at any ceremony , he might ask him to take part . And there were other Past Masters of the lodge who were always ready and willing , and he thought there need not be any doubt as to the work being carried out to the entire satisfaction of the members . He

should always prize that jewel much , as he knew it was the united gift of the lodge . His year of office would always be looked upon by him as a happy recollection , and if in time to come—as they fondly hoped and were sanguine enough to expect—they became a large and prosperous lodge , he should always feel it to be a particular honour that he had fulfilled the position of its first W . M . Bro . E . G . Simpson then proposed - 'The Health of

Bro . J . T . Richardson , the Installing Master . " He said every brother who was in the lodge could not be but impressed by the manner he had installed Bro . Ramsay . He had been indefatigable in his exertions for the promotion of the benefit of their lodge , therefore he tendered his thanks to him , and asked the brethren to drink the toast heartily . Bro . Richardson , in responding , said it had been a great

pleasure to install Bro . Ramsay , for he had known him so long and respected him so much . It had not been a task of labour , but a pleasure . He had promised Bro . Ramsay he would do all he could to assist him during his year of office . He felt the name of Bro . C . Swinn ought to have been coupled with the toast as he performed a , large , portion of the ceremony . However , knowing that the services he had rendered had been appreciated , he felt a special delight

to think that he belonged to the Manchester Dramatic Lodge . Bro . J . Straus , J . W ., proposed "The Health of the Visitors , " which was responded to , Other toasts followed , and terminated a most successful and enjoyable meeting . Many of the brethren being particularly talented , the pleasure of the evening was greatly enhanced by recitations , songs , & c .

thing that could be desired .
