I lis lordship travelled direct to Calais , and cros-ed to Dover on Sunday by the afternoon boat . He at once proceeded by train to London , where he arrived in the evening . Upon the platform to welcome him were the Karl and Countess of Selborne . with their t * o sons , Viscount Wolmer and the Hon . R . Palmer , and Bro . the Hon . Schamberg K . McDonnell , the Prime Minister ' s private secretary . After greeting his relatives and private secretary , the Premier entered his brougham with Viscountess Cranborne , and drove to Arlington-street .

A COMPLIMENTARY DINNER . —At the Inns of Court Hotel , Lincoln ' s Inn Fields , on Saturday last , there was given by the Infirmary Medical Superintendents'Society a dinner in honour of Bro . Dr . D . M . Forbes , who has retired from the service , and is leaving Shoreditch Infirmary after more than 30 years' tenure of office . Bro . Bemey , theChaiiinan , proposed "The Health of the Guest" in suitable terms , and he and Bro . Hopkins , Bro . Lunn , Mr . Gordon , and Dr . Toogood paid a high tribute to the good

work achieved by Bro . Dr . Forbes in the interests of the sick poor , and pointed out that not only was he the pioneer in the establishment cf the separate infirmaries under medical control , but also , as Mr . Hopkins explained , one of the first to draw attention to the fearful mortality amongst London lead-workers , and to recommend preventive measures , Ihe advocacy of which very materially led to the passing of the Lead Workers ' Act , which has been the means of saving many hundreds of lives . Bro . Dr . Forbes returned thanks in an appropriate speech .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES , K . G ., Vice-Patron of University College Hospital , will , on Tuesday , the 21 st prox ., lay the foundation-stone of the ne-v building now in course of construction through the generosity of Bro . Sir J . Blundell Maple , Bart ., M . P .

THE KARL OF DUNRAVEN left town on Tuesday to join his yacht Cariad , in which he will proceed to Lisbon , in order to be present at the celebrations in honour of the navigator Vasco da Gama , at which he has been deputed to act as representative of the Royal Geographical Society .

H . R . H . THE PRINCESS OF WALES , accompanied by Princess Victoria and Princess Charles of Denmark , arrived at Marlborough House , on Tuesday , from Sandringham . Miss Knollys and General Sir Dighton Probyn were in attendance . The Duke and Duchess of York visited T . R . H . the Prince and Princess cf Wales in the course of the day .

KILLED IIY A GARDEN ROLLER . —While about a dozen boys were engaged rolling a cricket pitch at the Royal Masonic Institution for Roys , Lordship-lane , Wood-Green , en Monday , one of their number , named Clement Cracknell , aged 13 , slipped and fell under the roller . The roller , which weighed upwards of a ton , passed over his body , killing him instantaneously .

THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT yesterday presided at the annual council meeting of the Aldershot Military Society , at the Prince Consort's Lihrary . The honorary treasurer and secretary , Lieut .-Col . E . A . H . Alderscn , D . A . A . G ., presented a report of the past year ' s work and a balance-sheet , which showed that the society was in a flourishing condition . Among the donors of books and magazines to the library during the pist year was her Majesty the Oueen .

A CABINET COUNCIL was held on Tuesday at the Foreign Office . Among Ministers present were Bros , the Right H in . Akers-D m ^ Ias , Lord Balfour of Burleigh , the Lord Chancellor ( Bro . A CHARACTERISTICALLY kind action of the Oueen has just been recorded . Her Majesty has forwarded a beautifully-framed portrait of herself to Mr . Robert Taylor , Postmaster , Scarva , County Down , aged 114 years , bearing the following inscription : — "This piclure is ptesenled by Oueen Victoria to Mr . Robert Taylor , Postmaster of Scaiva , on his having attained anlilmost unprecedented age , April , 1 S 9 S . " Her Majesty has also honoured Mr . Taylor by asking him for his photograph in return .

THE OUEEN and Court leave Windsor Castle at nine on Monday morning for th ? Metropolis . Her Majesty and suite travel " iy special Great Western train , and on arriving at Paddington shortly after noon drive under an escort of the Household Cavalry to Buckingham Palace . The Queen holds a Drawing Room on Tuesday , and returns on the following day to Windsor Castle . Her Majesty , according to present arrangements , is expected to leave Windsor for Scotland on the 20 th inst .

THE 40 T 11 ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL of the Orphan Working School , Maitland Park , N . VV . —with which the Alexandra Orphanage for Infants was amalgamated in 1 S 77—will be held in the Whitehall Rooms , Hotel Metropole , on Monday , the iGth inst ., when his Grace the Duke of Fife has very kindly consented to preside . There are two Schools , a senior and a junior—which together maintain and educate 500 children . The annual inccme is only about £ Ccoo , but the expenditure reaches fully j ( , 13 , 000 . It is a most deserving Institution and well merits the support of the brethren .

IN HIS APRIL is ; ue of " Night and Day , " Dr . Barnardo has the same story to tell that so many public charities have lately been telling , viz ., that receipts have been seriously diminished , and that there is urgent need of immediate help to maintain the efficiency of the institutions . '! Through the cages of the magazine there run tales of child destitution , neglect , and pitiable usage , which show that the homes have still an unexhausted mandate , and that a great task yet lies to their hands to be done . Their records , as set forth in " Personal Notes , " are full of interest in their narratives of how the rescued Waifs and Strays are suppoited .

WE HAVE much pleasure in announcing that the Brondesbury Lodge , No . 2 ( 193 , which was consecrated as recently as the 1 ith M trch , has sanctioned t ' ae formation of a lodge of instruction bearing its name , to meet at the Karl of Derby Hotel , High-road , Kilburn . CRYSTAL PALACE FIREWORKS . —Messrs . C . T . Brock and Co . have been gathering minute details of the war now in progress in order to construct the battle-piece which they intend making the leading feature of the firework displays in the coming firework season at the Crystal Palace , which will commence on Thursday , the 19 th instant . The modern appliances of war , which now form part of a naval engagement , will be introduced , even to the blowing up and sinking of an enormous battleship . Messrs . Brock have also in preparation novelties in living fireworks , mechanical moving devices , and aerial displays .

1 N CONNECTION with the Centenary of the Royal Masonic Institution fcr Boys , the W . M . of St . Martin's Lodge , No . 2455 , and Bro . the Rev . J . F . Kitto , M . A ., Chaplain to the lodge , and vicar of St . Martin ' s Church , Chaiing Cross , W . C , have arranged for a Masonic service to be held in the above church on Sunday , the 15 th inst ., at 3 . 30 p . m . The sermon will be preached by Bro . the Ven . Archdeacon of London , P . G . C . The

collection will be devoted to the Centenary Festival of the R . M . I . B . The floor of the church will be reserved for brethren and the gallery for their ladies and friends . Accommodation for brethren to clothe will be provided in the crypt of the church , which will be opened for brethren at 3 p . m . Tickets not required . It is hoped that a Urge number of brethren will attend to support our V . W . Bro . the Ven . Archdeaco 1 in his endeavours to assist this Institution .

THOMAS GRANT AND SONS , Ihe well-known wine merchants and distillers of Maidstone , whose Morella Cherry Brandy is so generally and deservedly appreciated , has established a further claim upon public favour by producing a new wine , to which they have assigned the name of " Oncmosto . " It is manufactured from grape ju'ce imported in the form of syrup ( mosto ) from abroad , French experts in the manufacture being

employed in the process . It possesses mary excellent qualities , not the least important of which are absolute purity and health-restoring properties . It has already become popular , not only owing to its intrinsic excellence , but also on account of the moderate price at which it is sold—24 s . per dozen bottles , or 2 Ss . per two dozen half bottles . " will be found a most delightful beverage for consumption at garden parties , water picnics , dancing parties , as well as for general use .

TUB MASONIC CHARITIES . —A banquet was held at the Royal Mortar Hole Woolwich , on the 27 th ult ., to celebrate the completion of a four-years' Charity scheme carried out under the auspices of the Nelson Lodge . Four years ago some members of the Nelson Lodge formed a club for the purpose of helping the Benevolent Institutions . Altogether there were more than 100 subscribers . The total amount 01

subscriptions received and allotted was ^ tofio 10 s ., and when every subscriber had been satisfied , and all expenses paid , there was a little balance of , ( , 15 15 s ., which was I ' ma ly spent in three more £ ^ 5 s . subscriberships , and conferred upon three lucky members by ballot . The Masonic Charities have thus been benefited by more than £ 1000 , and a great accumulation of voting power will be given to the Woolwich brethren at all elections of candidates for the three great Charities .

Archdeacon Sinclair , on behalf of the Institution , handed the Lady Mayoress a beautifully-bound volume , containing a record of their beneficent work , with an inscription in the handwriting of the Patroness , Princess Louise , Djchessof Fife . THE MAROUIS OF SALISHURY , accompanied by his daughter-in-law , Viscountess Cranborne , and her children , left Nice on Saturday afternoon last . I lis lordship travelled direct to Calais , and cros-ed to Dover on Sunday by the afternoon boat . He at once proceeded by train to London , where he arrived in the evening . Upon the platform to welcome him were the Karl and Countess of Selborne . with their t * o sons , Viscount Wolmer and the Hon . R . Palmer , and Bro . the Hon . Schamberg K . McDonnell , the Prime Minister ' s private secretary . After greeting his relatives and private secretary , the Premier entered his brougham with Viscountess Cranborne , and drove to Arlington-street .

A COMPLIMENTARY DINNER . —At the Inns of Court Hotel , Lincoln ' s Inn Fields , on Saturday last , there was given by the Infirmary Medical Superintendents'Society a dinner in honour of Bro . Dr . D . M . Forbes , who has retired from the service , and is leaving Shoreditch Infirmary after more than 30 years' tenure of office . Bro . Bemey , theChaiiinan , proposed "The Health of the Guest" in suitable terms , and he and Bro . Hopkins , Bro . Lunn , Mr . Gordon , and Dr . Toogood paid a high tribute to the good

work achieved by Bro . Dr . Forbes in the interests of the sick poor , and pointed out that not only was he the pioneer in the establishment cf the separate infirmaries under medical control , but also , as Mr . Hopkins explained , one of the first to draw attention to the fearful mortality amongst London lead-workers , and to recommend preventive measures , Ihe advocacy of which very materially led to the passing of the Lead Workers ' Act , which has been the means of saving many hundreds of lives . Bro . Dr . Forbes returned thanks in an appropriate speech .

KILLED IIY A GARDEN ROLLER . —While about a dozen boys were engaged rolling a cricket pitch at the Royal Masonic Institution for Roys , Lordship-lane , Wood-Green , en Monday , one of their number , named Clement Cracknell , aged 13 , slipped and fell under the roller . The roller , which weighed upwards of a ton , passed over his body , killing him instantaneously .

THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT yesterday presided at the annual council meeting of the Aldershot Military Society , at the Prince Consort's Lihrary . The honorary treasurer and secretary , Lieut .-Col . E . A . H . Alderscn , D . A . A . G ., presented a report of the past year ' s work and a balance-sheet , which showed that the society was in a flourishing condition . Among the donors of books and magazines to the library during the pist year was her Majesty the Oueen .

A CHARACTERISTICALLY kind action of the Oueen has just been recorded . Her Majesty has forwarded a beautifully-framed portrait of herself to Mr . Robert Taylor , Postmaster , Scarva , County Down , aged 114 years , bearing the following inscription : — "This piclure is ptesenled by Oueen Victoria to Mr . Robert Taylor , Postmaster of Scaiva , on his having attained anlilmost unprecedented age , April , 1 S 9 S . " Her Majesty has also honoured Mr . Taylor by asking him for his photograph in return .

THE OUEEN and Court leave Windsor Castle at nine on Monday morning for th ? Metropolis . Her Majesty and suite travel " iy special Great Western train , and on arriving at Paddington shortly after noon drive under an escort of the Household Cavalry to Buckingham Palace . The Queen holds a Drawing Room on Tuesday , and returns on the following day to Windsor Castle . Her Majesty , according to present arrangements , is expected to leave Windsor for Scotland on the 20 th inst .

THE 40 T 11 ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL of the Orphan Working School , Maitland Park , N . VV . —with which the Alexandra Orphanage for Infants was amalgamated in 1 S 77—will be held in the Whitehall Rooms , Hotel Metropole , on Monday , the iGth inst ., when his Grace the Duke of Fife has very kindly consented to preside . There are two Schools , a senior and a junior—which together maintain and educate 500 children . The annual inccme is only about £ Ccoo , but the expenditure reaches fully j ( , 13 , 000 . It is a most deserving Institution and well merits the support of the brethren .

Barnardo has the same story to tell that so many public charities have lately been telling , viz ., that receipts have been seriously diminished , and that there is urgent need of immediate help to maintain the efficiency of the institutions . '! Through the cages of the magazine there run tales of child destitution , neglect , and pitiable usage , which show that the homes have still an unexhausted mandate , and that a great task yet lies to their hands to be done . Their records , as set forth in " Personal Notes , " are full of interest in their narratives of how the rescued Waifs and Strays are suppoited .

CRYSTAL PALACE FIREWORKS . —Messrs . C . T . Brock and Co . have been gathering minute details of the war now in progress in order to construct the battle-piece which they intend making the leading feature of the firework displays in the coming firework season at the Crystal Palace , which will commence on Thursday , the 19 th instant . The modern appliances of war , which now form part of a naval engagement , will be introduced , even to the blowing up and sinking of an enormous battleship . Messrs . Brock have also in preparation novelties in living fireworks , mechanical moving devices , and aerial displays .

1 N CONNECTION with the Centenary of the Royal Masonic Institution fcr Boys , the W . M . of St . Martin's Lodge , No . 2455 , and Bro . the Rev . J . F . Kitto , M . A ., Chaplain to the lodge , and vicar of St . Martin ' s Church , Chaiing Cross , W . " It is manufactured from grape ju'ce imported in the form of syrup ( mosto ) from abroad , French experts in the manufacture being

employed in the process . It possesses mary excellent qualities , not the least important of which are absolute purity and health-restoring properties . It has already become popular , not only owing to its intrinsic excellence , but also on account of the moderate price at which it is sold—24 s . per dozen bottles , or 2 Ss . per two dozen half bottles . " will be found a most delightful beverage for consumption at garden parties , water picnics , dancing parties , as well as for general use .

TUB MASONIC CHARITIES . —A banquet was held at the Royal Mortar Hole Woolwich , on the 27 th ult ., to celebrate the completion of a four-years' Charity scheme carried out under the auspices of the Nelson Lodge . Four years ago some members of the Nelson Lodge formed a club for the purpose of helping the Benevolent Institutions . Altogether there were more than 100 subscribers . The total amount 01

subscriptions received and allotted was ^ tofio 10 s ., and when every subscriber had been satisfied , and all expenses paid , there was a little balance of , ( , 15 15 s ., which was I ' ma ly spent in three more £ ^ 5 s . subscriberships , and conferred upon three lucky members by ballot . The Masonic Charities have thus been benefited by more than £ 1000 , and a great accumulation of voting power will be given to the Woolwich brethren at all elections of candidates for the three great Charities .
