Annual Dinner Of The Old Masonians.

Bro . R . S . CHANDLER , Hon . Treas ., said that the Association had this year to mourn the loss of one of its founders—a man who had done a great deal to make the undertaking a success—Mr . Charles Heward Uwins , who passed away last December . A proof that the Benevolent and Grant Fund was of some utility was in the fact that one who had helped to start it had just received assistance from it . He was glad to say that the Association would send a Steward to the Centenary Festival this year , and although the amount he would take up would not be large ( perhaps £ 100 ) , he could say that the great majority of Old Masonians had given of their little towards the great fund .

Mr . HORACE LEWIS , Hon . Sec , said he regretted that a number of Masons who generally supported them on such occasions were not able to be present . He had received letters of regret from Lord Leigh , Bros . F . Binckes ( late Sec . R . M . I . B . ) , the Rev . H . Hebb ( Head Master of the School ) . R . Eve , W . Russell , H . Manfield , W . W . Chate , G . Read , J . Stephens , J . Leach Barrett , and many others . He was glad to say that their social meetings were improving , that the members were becoming more enthusiastic . Their cricket club had proved a great success , and the football club was not far behind . Both had been the means of members

spending many a pleasant Saturday together . He would be glad to see Masons take more interest in the Old Boys and use their influence to give Old Masonians an opportunity of making good positions in the world . They were indebted to several gentlemen for assistance , Bro . J . M . McLeod especially . He hoped that the boys who had been educated under the new regime at the School would join with the members who had been under the care of the late Rev . Richard Morris , a man whom he ( the speaker ) should always remember with gratitude , and so make the Association a great success .

"The Past and Vice-Presidents" was proposed by Mr . W . j . PACKER , who thanked those gentlemen for their support , and said that the Association was well worthy of such , because it was not carried on with selfish motives . Bro . A . WATKINS proposed " Prosperity to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , ' ' and said he hoped that the removal of the School would be a great improvement—that he was proud of being an Old Masonian , and would always be grateful to those who had helped him in life .

Bro . J . MORRISON MCLEOD , Sec , R . M . I . B ., said he regretted he was the only Past or Vice-President present , but they were all such busy men and had so many engagements , that there was good reason for their absence . He assured the Association that they all continued to take great interest in Old Masonians , and pointed out what some were doing to help in the formation of the lodge . As regards the School , he believed the decision to move it would prove to be for its

advantage . He hoped that the Centenary Festival would be successful . He asked the Old Masonians to support H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , who has graciously consented to present the prizes of the School , at Albert Hall , on June 7 th . Bro . R . HAROLD WILLIAMS , in proposing "The Chairman , " said that the Association highly esteemed the presence at their meetings of such a busy man as Lieut .-Col . Probyn who , in reply , said that he always took great interest in the boys , and would do what he could for the Association in the future .

Mr . E . A . B . GOUGH proposed "The Visitors , '' and assured them that they would always receive a hearty welcome to the Association ' s meetings , and took the opportunity to thank those who had helped with the musical programme . Bro . G . MICKLEY , M . D ., P . A . G . D . C , in replying , said that he hoped that all Old Masonians who were not already Masons would join the new lodge as soon as possible .

During the evening the HON . TREASURER announced donations to the Benevolent and Grant Fund : Bros . Lieut .-Col . Probyn , £ 2 3 s ., and H . Alanfield , P . P . G . D ., £ 3 3 s . ; Messrs . A . K . Bowes ( an Old Masonian , now in Chicago ) , £ 3 3 s ., and A . G . McLeod , £ 1 is . The proceedings , which had been most enjoyable throughout , were brought to a close with the National Anthem ,

Bro . SMALK , in responding , alluded in appropriate terms to the great loss which they had sustained since the last festival by the death of Bro . Willby ( to whom he had filled the office of Assistant Secretary ) , and since whose decease he had acted as Secretary to the lodge , and whilst regretting his inability to continue in that office ( by reason of his oculist ' s recommendations ) , he had , nevertheless , to congratulate the members upon their having secured the services of so worthy a successor as Bro . Mullins .

The toast of " The Lodge of Instruction" was then proposed , and replied to b y Bros . MULLINS , Sec , and GOLDSTEIN . The former spoke of the success that had attended the lodge during the past year , and hoped that the future would bring even greater prosperity to the lodge and its members .
