earnest wish of them all that he might be long spared to wear it and be among them . In acknowledging the jewel , Bro . Harry Townsend , I . P . M ., said that he had tried to do his very best , and if they were satisfied , he was deeply _ grateful to them , and for the many kindnesses he had received at their hands during his happy year of office . Upon the motion of Bro . W . M . Stiles , P . G . T ., the sum of 10 guineas was voted from the lodge funds to be placed on Bro . Harry Townend ' s list as Steward for the forthcoming Centenary Festival of the Boys' Institution . Letters regretting their inability to attend were read from Bros . E . Letchworth , G . Sec . ; J . M . McLeod , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . I . B . ; and others .

The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet . After full justice had been done to this part of the proceedings , and as a preface to the toasts , the W . M . stated that he would be brief in his speeches , as they had a long musical programme to get through , and the usual loyal toasts were duly honoured . In giving " The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . stated that they

were honoured with the presence of two Grand Officers , one of whom was a member of the lodge , and of whom they were very proud . The Grand Officers were ever willing to do their utmost for the Craft , and he associated with the toast the name of Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . G . Std . Br ., who was well known to them . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . G . S . B ., responded .

Bro . Harry Townend , I . P . M ., in proposing "The W . M ., Bro . A . H . Cooper , " said that was the only toast he had the honour of submitting . That was the W . M . _ ' s birthday and as he had known him for many years , both Masonically and otherwise , he was delighted to have had the gratification of installing him in the chair of King Solomon , and he felt that he was acceptable to them all and he was certain that he would justify all their hopes . The toast was drunk with acclamation , and

Bro . A . H . Cooper , W . M ., on rising to respond , was received with much enthusiasm . He thanked Bro . Townend for his kind words and the brethren for the hearty reception they had given him . He had had to wait 25 years to get to the chair , and now that he was there , he considered it quite worth working for , and he appreciated the great honour of having been elected Master . He would do his utmost to uphold the dignity of their good lodge , and he hoped to carry out his duties in a manner that would never cause them to regret having placed him in his high position .

The W . M . gave "The Installing and I . P . M ., " and reviewed the very excellent work which Bro . Harry Townend had done during his year of office , and they all ad aired the masterly manner in which he had performed the installation ceremony . He was deeply respected by all the members , and he was eminent in . every way in the Craft . Bro . Harry Townend , who was received with quite an ovation , heartily thanked the

W . M . for his remarks , and the brethren generally for their approval of his small efforts , and he hoped to be with them for many years to assist them in any way , and to promote the interests of the lodge . The Charity-box having been passed round , the W . M ., who made an up-to-date auctioneer , then put up the contents of the box for sale , and after some spirited bidding , he knocked it down at £ \ 5 s . to Bro . G . H . Paine . The contents it was afterwards stated amounted to £ 1 5 s . 3 d .

In presenting the toast of "The Visitors , " the W . M . stated that they were honoured with the presence of many eminent and distinguished Maso ns , and on behalf of the lodge he gave them all a very hearty welcome , remarking , that they always tried to make their guests happy and comfortable , and to extend them the right hand of fellowship , and he coupled with the toast the names of Bros . W . Stacey , W . M . 19 ; F . C Lintott , W . M . 1365 ; W . Weschc " , W . M . 1929 ; J . T . Saunders , P . M . 1507 ; and J . Irvine , P . M . S 62 . The toast of the visitors having been responded to by several brethren ,

The toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary" was given by the W . M ., who 'remarked , where would the lodge be without them ? Bro . Stiles , P . G . T ., was not only the Treasurer , but the father of the lodge , and the Secretary , Bro . Lamigeon , P . M ., was excellent , and might he long continue to hold his office . Bro . W . M . Stiles , P . G . T ., Treas ., responded , and said that he was honoured to he the first Master of the lodge , and while he had the great assistance of Bro . Lamigeon , P . M ., as Secretary , it would be a pleasure to him to do his best to add , if possible , to the welfare of the lodge .

Bro . J . J . Lamigeon , P . M ., Sec , also responded . He was glad and proud that the lodge was in such a prosperous state . As Secretary , he was doing his best but they must remember that he was a foreigner and somewhat handicipped , but , notwithstanding that , he hoped his heart was in the right place to do everything that was necessary to carry out his duties to their entire satisfaction . In proposing "The Officers of the Lodge , " the W . M . made special mention of Bro . Robert Emery , S . W ., who he observed had kindly given way for others to go forward .

Bro . Emery was one of the best of fellows and a good Mason and he was delighted to have him as S . W . The W . M . also referred to the qualifications of the other officers and remarked that he thought a better start could not be found . Bro . Robert Emery , S . W ., responded in an eloquent speech , as did Bro . G . S . Elliott . J . W . Bro . Percie C . Cooper , I . G ., son of the W . M ., also acknowledged the toast of the Officers , and said there was a well-known saying in social life that some people were

born with a silver spoon in their mouth , signifying the remarkable fortune thit attended them through life . He did not know what the technical phrase was in Freemasonry , but whatever it might be he thought that phrase might be applied to him when he considered the remarkable fortune that had attended him during the short period he had been a Mason , as he was sure that being privileged to be the first initiate of the

lodge , passing his Third Degree before he was 21 years of age , and honoured by being promoted an officer before three years had elapsed was very good fortune , and obviously could not be claimed as the outcome of skill or ability . There was only one way in which a brother could reciprocate the kindness of the W . M ., and that was to faithfully fulfil the duties he had graciously bestowed upon him , and suc ' i would be his constant endeavour . The Tyler ' s toast ended a very pleisant evjninj .

A capital programme was arranged under the able direction of Bro . H . J . Foan , Org . 2473 , the artistes being Madame Ellaline Grantley , Miss Teres * Deviene , Master Charlie Potter , Messrs . lleibeit Phillips , Thos . Abel , Louis W . Bennett , Ambrose Thorne , Harry Clifford , and Bro . Harry Hall . Special mention should be made of Madame Ellaline Grantley and Master Potter .

earnest wish of them all that he might be long spared to wear it and be among them .
