On the motion of the D . P . G . M ., supported by Bro . F . HUGHES , it was unanimously resolved that an expression of regret be recorded in the minutes of Prov . Prov , G . Reg ., and the PROV . G . M . having borne his testimony to the services they had rendered , Piov . Bro . A . H . Bateman , P . M . 33 , gave another of his interesting lectures to "Our Boys" in the Assembly Hall , on Friday evening , the 22 nd ultimo . The subject— "The Electric Telegraph "—was most ably dealt with in a manner which could not be other than clear to the audience . By the aid of cleverly desi gned diagrams the lecturer showed the growth of telegraphy from the earliest tim es to

the present advanced stages of the electric system . His graphic description of the difficulties attending the laying of the pioneer American Cables was not the least interesting part of a most instructive lesson , and on the call of Bro . Glass ( who acted as chairman ) our "lusty" boys showed their appreciation of the lecture by according Bro . Bateman very hearty cheers , renewed again on his promising a return visit with a further popular subject .

The lecture was attended and enjoyed by several members of the Board ot Management , including Bros . Glass , Fairchild , Burgess , Cummings , Stephens and McLeod , Secretary .

Provincial Grand Lodge Of Jersey.

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF JERSEY .

The annual meeting of the above Prov . Grand Lodge was held under the auspices of the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 491 , at the Masonic Temple , St . Helier , on Monday , the 25 th ult . Bro . Col . E . C . Malet de Carteret presided , and there was a large number of Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers present , including Bros . Dr . Le Cronier , D P . G . M . ; P . Baudains , Mayor of St . Helier , P . S . G . W . ; F . J . Godfray , P . J . G . W . ; J . O , Le Sueur , P . P . S . G . W ., P . G . Treas . ; J . Durell , P . P . S . G . W . ; W . Bowles , P . P . J . G . W .: and others .

The Prov . Grand Lodge having been opened , Bro . H . STEVENSON ( in the absence through illness of the Prov . G . Sec , Bro . Dr . A . C . Godfray , ) read the roll of the lodges , which were all represented , and then called over the names of the Prov . Grand Officers , nearly all of whom were present . The minutes of the last annual meeting and those of a special meeting held last September having been read and confirmed ,

The P . G . M . addressed a few remarks to the brethren on the progress of Masonry in the province during the past 12 months . He commenced by congratulating the brethren on the fact that there had been an increase of 12 in the total membership , thus bringing up the number of Masons in the province to 449 , which , he thought , compared favourably with the numbers of many provinces which had larger spheres of action . He was sorry , however ,

to have to say that that very satisfactory condition was largely discounted by the number of brethren who were returned in arrears , the percentage of such brethren being very much higher than it should be . This , he knew , was to a considerable extent due to the fact of the financial year of some of the lodges not corresponding with that of the Provincial Grand Lodge , and he therefore wished to ask the lodges to make such alterations in their by-laws

as would obviate that condition of affairs in the future . He then proceeded to urge on the lodges the necessity of subscribing more largely to the great Masonic Institutions , as although the province possessed a fair number ol votes in the different Charities , the proportion held by the lodges was very small , and he pointed out that it was far more advantageous for private subscriptions to be sent up in the name of a lodge , as by so doing the votes

became permanent , and were not lost on the death of any individual brother . He was pleased to be able to say that the death roll of the province had been very light during the past year , the only death recorded being that of Bro . Metherell , P . M . 1003 , P . P . G . Supt . of Wks . Finally , he wished to refer to one other matter , and that was that in the list of officers for the ensuing year the brethren would find that there was a large number

of re-appointments . In previous years it had been customary to have almost an entirely new set of officers , with the result that nearly every Past Master in the province wore the purple , and it had become difficult to find worthy brethren qualified to take office . He had therefore decided to make very few changes in his officers this year , and thought that in two or three years' time he would then have a goodly array of young Past Masters to choose from . !
