Edgar Bowyer and family immediately visited the residents at their dwellings and made each of them the annual presents of tea and tobacco , and when this office had been performed the whole party were summond to dinner ,
which was spread in the handsome hall of the Institution , where the warm and cheerful aspect of the place afforded a pleasant contrast to the wretched experiences of the visitors on their journey from home . The gathering was most agreeable , and made a delightful family party , for there were very few of the visitors who had not been to the Institution before . The best exertions were made by
each and all to make each and all happy , and the consequence was that everyone was happy . Bro . Dr . Strong presided , having on his right Mrs . Bowyer and on his left Miss Norris , the matron of the Institution , to whose indefatigable exertions on behalf of the residents the Institution owes so much . Bios . Edgar Bowyer , James Terry , Dr . Strong , Thos . Cubitt , and W . A . Scurrah did duty as

John Newton vvas called upon to respond as one of "The Founders of the Feast . Bro . Dr . STRONG having explained that these entertainments were not provided out of the funds of the
Institution , but came of voluntary contributions by brethren and ladies . Bro . NEWTON said he was taken by surprise when he heard his name coupled vvith the toast , but he nevertheless thanked the brethren and ladies for receiving it so warmly . Speaking on behalf of the founders of the feast he assured the company that nothing gave them greater pleasure than
to render any service , however small , to the inmates of this splendid Institution , and their efforts would be none the less in the future for the kind way in vvhich their services had been recognised . Bro . Dr . STRONG then proposed "Success to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution ! " Long might it flourish , and long might those who now reigned over vt minister to
the comfort of the inmates , and long might the inmates live to enjoy the ministration . In this Jubilee year of the Queen the brethren looked forward to having someday to celebrate the Jubilee ofa brother who had done more for the Institution than anyone—Bro . Terry . To a certain extent he vvas the reigning sovereign there , and they were all pleased to see him . If a domestic affliction had not
visited him Mrs . Terry and family vvould also have been present , but Bro . Terry , as a matter of duty , felt bound to come . Bro , TERRY , in reply , said at a meeting like that , associated as it was with friends who did honour to the Institution , very few words were necessary to convey to the
minds of those who attended the Executive Committees of the management of the Institution . But it might be necessary to inform those who were there for the first time that the room in which they now met vvas at one time not more than half its present size , and was then used as a lumber room , and not for the comfort of the residents . Nice for the able and efficient manner in vvhich he had carried out the duties of thc chair for the first time , and also for the clear and precise manner in which he had worked the ceremony of initiation —seconded by the J . W ., and carried unanimously . The W . M . made a suitable reply . Bro . C . Lambert said he trusted he was not out of place in proposing that a vote of thanks also be recorded on the minutes to Bros . W . C . Smith , Preceptor , G . Reynolds , Sec , and E . C .
Mulvey , and other brethren who had so kindly assisted to make this lodge of instruction successful during the year . Bro . VV . C . Smith , as Preceptor , vvas kind and courteous in his teaching . C Mulvey and other brethren assisted much to the success of the lodge . He wished all the brethren "A Happy New Year . " Seconded by Bro .
W . Hancock , who endorsed all that had fallen from the lips of Bro . C . Lambert . Bro . W . C . Smith , Preceptor , in reply , said that the brethren of the lodge had done much to help and encourage him by their attention to his instruction , and he felt also the kind words which had fallen from Bro . C . Lambert . It was a great pleasure to be amongst them , and nothing gave him more satisfaction than to know that he vvas helping many brethren to occupy the chair in the same creditable and able manner in which their W . M . had done that
evening . Bro . G . Reynolds , Secretary , in acknowledging the kindness of Bro . C . Lambert in speaking so highly of the manner in which he had carried out the duties of Secretaryship , said he could not say much , as his heart was full of grief , but assured the brethren he hoped to carry out the duties in the future as he had done in the past to the satisfaction of all . The brethren supported the lodge of instruction well , for on looking to the register there had been
over 1600 attendances in the year 1886 , a number most encouraging to him in his duties . He felt he could rely upen the members to help him to make the Covent Garden Lodge of Instruction still more prosperous . Bro . E . C . Mulvey said lie felt a great compliment had been paid to him in coupling his name with the above brethren in the vote of thanks . He conld assure them he would do all in his power for the benefit of the lodge of instruction , and wished all the incoming officers of the mother lodge success in their respective
duties , and not to forget the instruction they had received from the Covent Garden Lodge of Instruction . He wished all the brethren "A Happy New Year . W . 194 ; Bro . W . J . Crutch ; Miss
Annie Cotter , Miss Harriet Cotter . Bro James Terry received the visitors with a hearty welcome and " A Happy New Year" to everyone . Bro . and Mrs .
A . Scurrah did duty as
carvers , and the other gentlemen acted as assistants in attending to the diners . When dinner was finished the few customary toasts were proposed , and Bro .
After a short time , however , since he vvas first appointed
