P . Greenspan , A . M . Goodrich , and M . M . Friedlander , Stwds . ; and R . j . Morley , Tyler . The usual addresses were given by Bro . Barnett Marcus in a masterly manner and he deserves praise for the excellent way he carried out the whole of the installation ceremony . The next duty of the new W . M ., Bro . J . Berlyn , was , as he remarked , a very important and pleasant one , it being to present to Bro . Barnett Marcus a Past Master ' s jewel , in which was inserted a very valuable diamond , added by some of the members of the lodge . It would have been impossible to have had a better Master and

one who could have been more hospitable , and he hoped he might have a long and happy life . In acknowledging the jewel Bro . Barnett Marcus thanked the W . M . for his kind words , and it was his earnest desire to do his utmost for that , his mother lodge , and for Freemasonry in general . The jewel bore the following inscription : " Presented to Bro . Barnett Marcus , P . M ., by the brethren of the Lodge of Israel , No . 205 , in appreciation of his efficient services as W . M . during the year 1 S 95 . 28 th January , 1 S 96 . " The Worshipful Master then rose and said he had yet another very pleasant duty to

perform , which was to present Bro . C . F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., with an address and a cheque for a handsome sum , which had been subscribed for by the members and others , as a small token of the feelings they had towards him , and for his valuable services to the Iodge for the last 20 years . He knew no one who had worked harder for the lodge and Freemasonry , and he was held in the highest esteem by the members , and by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance in Masonry . The Secretary then read the address which was as follows : "This testimonial , with a cheque , was presented

b y the Lodge of Israel of Freemasons , No . 205 , to Worshipful Brother Charles Frederick Hogard , P . M ., P . G . Std . Br . of England , in recognition of the very valuable services he rendered to the lodge as Secretary , for a period of 20 years , and also as a mark of the goodwill and esteem of the brethren . In addition to a sum of money presented by the lodge , the following brethren evinced their personal appreciation of Bro . Hogard ' s services by subscribing towards this testimonial . " ( Then follow 71 signatures . ) Bro . C . F . Hogard , on rising , was enthusiastically received . He said :

* ' I am sure you will understand with what feelings I rise to thank you , one and all , for this very handsome testimonial ; believe me , l did not resign my position of Secretary of ths Lodge of Israel without due consideration , or without feelings of regret . After 20 years ' service the duties of theoffice were to me a labour of love , and it was only when I found that my business avocations prevented me from properly carrying out those duties that I felt compelled to relinquish the position . The magnificent present which you make me proves that although my duties have been onerous thev have met with vour aooroval .

At times the Secretary of a lodge has unpleasant as well as agreeable duties to perform , for instance , when he has to remind some of the members of their persistent neglect to pay up their subscriptions , and to call their attention to the by-laws which govern the lodge . But I have always endeavoured to carry out this part of the business in such a manner that after 20 years I do not think I have made an enemy of any one member . The value of the testimonial is much enhanced by the fact that members of other lodges in which I held office have desired to join with you in this mark of your esteem . I mean the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , and the Clissold Lodge , No . 2551 , which , although only

consecrated in the early part of last year , have added their quota to it . I assure you that I shall look back on this day as a red-letter one in the history of my Masonic career , and I trust that the G . A . O . T . U . will spare me for some time to come , and I shall at all times be glad to give my best services to this my mother lodge . Again I thank you most heartily and most sincerely . " Letters were read from Bros . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , G . Reg . ; Sir Augustus Harris , P . G . Treas . ; R . Loveland Loveland , Pres . bd . Gen . Purps . ; E . Letchworth , G . Sec . ; G . E . Fairchild , A . G . D . C ; W . Lake , A . G . Sec ; E . Terry , P . G . Treas . ; Lennox Browne , P . D . G . D . C : las . Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec R . M . B . I . ; F . R . W . Hedges , P . G . S . B ., Sec R . M . I . G . ; and others , regretting their inability to attend .

The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a recherche' banquet . At the close of the repast , theW . M . gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , in brief but happy terms . In proposing "The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the W . M . made sp : cial mention of those who had honoured the lodge with their presence , and he coupled with the toast the name of Bro . W . M . Stiles , G . Treas . The toast was drunk with acclamation , and

Bro . W . M . Stiles , G . Treas ., responded . He said that his colleagues who were with him had worked hard in Grand Lodge , and as to Bro . Hoeard , he was not only ornamental , but useful . He was proud of him , as he had rendered great service to the Clissold Lodge , of which he ( Bro . Stiles ) was W . M . Might he take that opportunity of thanking many of those who were present who had assisted him on a recent occasion , and which enabled him to have the great honour of then appearing before them as a Grand Officer ?

Bro . Barnett Marcus , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Worshipful Master , " said that it needed very little from him to commend the Worshipful Master ' s many excellent qualities , and if he continued to discharge his duties as he had begun them , there was no doubt that he would turn out one of the very best of Masters that itwas possible to have . Bro . J . Berlyn , W . M ., on rising to respond , received a very hearty welcome . He

said mat tneir inimlestation lillecl him with so much enthusiasm that words failed him to adequately acknowledge the toast , but he would carry out everything asked of him to the best of his ability . Ihe numbers should exercise all care in introducing new blood , and he thought it was the duty of a W . M . to impress initiates with what they had undertaken , and urge them to become , good and excellent members of the Craft .

The W . M . gave "The Visitors , " which , he said , was a toast that was always received in the Lodge of Israel with great enthusiasm . They were honoured that evening with the presence of many eminent and distinguished Masons , and , on behalf of the lodge , he gave them all a very hearty welcome . He associated with the toast the names of Bros . M . Emanuel , P . P . G . R . Hants ( Mayor of Southampton ) an old Past Master of thelodge ; fsaac Lazarus , W . M . 1 S 5 ; J . W . Barker , P . M . 1767 ; Ben Da Costa , P . M ., the Preceptor of the lodgeof instruction connected with thelodga ; and Henry Harris .

Bro . M . Emanuel , P . P . G . R ., responded . He said that it was now within four months of 40 years that he had been a Mason , and a subscribing member the whole time . He had no idea that he would have been called upon to acknowledge the toast of the visitors , which was one that was never omitted in Masonic circles in the United Kingdom , and he was not prepared to properly respond . ¦ Twenty-three years ago he occupied the proud position of W . M . of the Lodge of Israel , which was the pleasantest year of his existence , and he was elad to find that he was still retained in the memory of

some of the members of the lodge , and it was seven years since he visited the lodge , when he was Sheriff of the town of which he had now the honour of being the Mayor . During the last 23 years he had passed through three chairs in Masonry , and again had been W . M ., and only a few days ago he installed his successor . They must not think he was sounding his own trumpet , he only mentioned these Lets as evidence that the

Lodge of Israel never put anyone in the chair who was not able to do everything in the ritual , and he was proud that he had been able to show a little record since he went through the chair in their lodge . Bro . Isaac Lazarus , W . M . 185 , expressed his thanks for the hearty manner the toast of the Visitors had been received . He had only been a Mason eight years , but he was proud that he was now the W . M . of his lodge . Their new W . M . had started exceedingly well , and he was very much impressed with the way he invested his officers .

Bro . Ben Da Costa , P . M . 1349 , said that he appreciated his name having been associated with the toast . He had the honour to be the Preceptor of the Lodge of Instruction connected with the lodge , which had turned out so many capable W . Ms ., including the new W . M ., who was quite able to hold his own in the Craft . Bro . J . W . Barker , P . M . 17 G 7 , said that since he had been a Mason he always regretted that he had not the eloquence he should wish . Their lodge was well known for its excellent working , and if the younger members would only follow in the able footsteps of the Past Masters , they could not go wrong , but would prove shining lights in the lodge and the Craft .

Bro . Henry Harris also acknowledged the toast in very eloquent terms , urging the members to join the lodge of instruction . " The Masonic Charities " was next given by the W . M ., who remarked that no words of his were needed to impress upon the members the utmost importance and necessity of giving liberally to the three noble Institutions , of which all Masons were proud . He was glad to see that Bro . McLeod had lately arrived , and it gave him very much pleasure to join his name with the toast .

Bro . J . M . McLeod , Sec . R . M . I . B ., in response , stated that he was sorry not to have been present at the working of the lodge , but their gathering clashed with the annual finance meeting of the Institation he had the honour to represent , but he felt the working had been , as it wasalways there , excellent . He spoke fully , giving elaborate and interesting details of the three Institutions , and , in conclusion , he made a very earnest and eloquent appeal on behalf of the Boys , and urged them all to give liberally to the W . M ., whohad kindly consented to go upas Steward tor the Boys'School , and make his list in amount one worthy of the Lodge of Israel , which had a splendid record for its munificence in the past , and so keep up their great reputation .

Bro . McLeod ' s appeal made a very great impression , and we venture to think that the outcome will be that the W . M . will have the gratification of taking up a large sum for the Boys' Institution . In submitting the toast of " The Lodge of Israel Benevolent Fund , " the W . M . stated that they had now ^ , 950 invested for that fund . He coupled the name of Bro . A . Cohen , who responded in eloquent and appropriate terms . It was subsequently stated that £ rS had been subscribed that evening for the lodge benevolent fund .

The W . M . gave "The Installing Master , Bro . Barnett Marcus , and the Past Masters , " paying a tribute to the excellent services rendered by the outgoing Master , and observing that no other Iodge could equal their Past Masters , and they were proud of them . He joined with the toast the names of Bros . Barnett Marcus , I . P . M . ; W . Littaur , P . M . ; and A . J . Henochsberg , P . M ., who all responded . " The Treasurer and Secretary " having been honoured ,

Bro . H . J . Phillips , P . M ., Secretary , responded . He said that in succeeding Bro . Hogard , he had a big task before him , as he had been one of the best of Secretaries , and was most eminent in the Craft , but anyway he would do his utmost in his new office , and he hoped to be able to please more than offend , but still he should do his duty . In giving " The Officers , " the W . M . observed that he was honoured with a splendid contingent , and with their great assistance he hoped to carry out his duties with every satisfaction to the members .

Suitable responses were made by Bros . Isaac Rosilki , S . W ., and H . M . Harris , P . M ., D . C The Tyler ' s toast concluded a very enjoyable evening and one that will long be remembered , and the W . M . is to be congratulated on the great success of the gathering . The musical programme , which was excellent , was under the direction of Bro . W . Wright , P . P . G . Org . Middx ., assisted by Mrs . J . Trenner , Miss Phyllis Hope , Bros . B . Evans , G . De Pledge , Sam Wright ( the last-named giving his humorous songs with marked effect ) , and Miss Daisy Walker , whose artistic rendering of two songs gave much pleasure .

South Saxon Lodge , No . 311 . On Wednesday , the 15 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Lewes , Bro . James Peters was appointed the hundredth Worshipful Master of the above Lodge . The out-going W . M ., Bro . Gerard Lloyd ably performed the ceremony of installing his successor , and the latter then appointed the tollowing officers : Bros . R . Weston , S . W . ; W . Flint , J . VV . ; J . H . Every , Treas . ; H . Grainger , Sec . ; E . G . Hales , D . C . ; G . H . Levett , S . U . i G . J . Lenny , J . D . ; R . Hollyman , I . G . ; and S . L . Wright , Tyler . Bro . Lloyd was presented with a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of his services in the chair during

his year of office , and , at the close of the business , Bro . Henry Hall was made the recipient of a most gratifying mark of esteem and respect on his retirement from the office of Tyler after 28 years' service . The presentation was made by Bro . T . R . White , on behalf of the lodge , and consisted of a handsome timepiece and a framed portrait of himself . Accompanying the gift was the inscription : " This portrait , together with a timepiece , was presented to Bro . Henry Hall , in recognition of his faithful services as Tyler for 28 years , by the brethren of the South Saxon Lodge of Freemasons , i . i '" Jan ., 1 S 9 G . "

The usual banquet afterwards took place at the White Hart Hotel , an elaborate lepast being served by Mr . H . Tuff . The musical programme was sustained by Miss Blanche Day , Bros . W . Stone , J . Kennard , G . E . Barwell , and S . L . Wright , Mr . Horace Jackson being at the pianoforte .

BRO . J USTICE BKUCE was installed W . M . of the Northern Bar Lodge , No . " > ' on Wednesday evening , at the Cafe Royal , Regent-street , in succession to his Honour Bro . S . Hall , Q . C , Vice-Chancellor of the County Palatine of Lancaster . AMONG the new members who have been returned to Parliament since the prorogation in September last , and will take their seats on the re-assembling of the House 01 Commons , are Lord Warkworth , son of Bro . Earl Percy , who has been elected W iwr

South Kensington , in placeof Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , now Lord Genesk ; . " F . Warr , who has succeeded Bro . Baron Henry de Worms , now Lord Pirbright , as meniW for the East Toxteth Division of Liverpool ; Mr . Lecky , returned for Dublin University . 1 place of Bro . the Hon . David Plunket , now Lord Rathmorc ; and Bro . the Hon . Evely Hubbard , the new member for Brixton , vice Bro . the Marquis of Carmarthen , now L ) uK of Leeds .

Craft Masonry.

The W . M . gave "The Visitors , " which , he said , was a toast that was always received in the Lodge of Israel with great enthusiasm .

W . ; W . Flint , J . VV . ; J . H .
