Third Ladies' Night Of The Southern Star Lodge, Na. 1158.

The toast was most heartily received . Bro . J . HANDS , W . M ., thanked the company for such a cordial reception . He : elt sure , from the numbers present , that such meetings were making their mark in Masonry and doing good . The great success of that event amply repaid him for all his exertions , and he hoped to have the pleasure of being present at many such gatherings . He could not let that opportunity pass without expressing his thanks to Bro . J . Austin , P . M ., Sec , for his untiring and energetic assistance ; also to the Committee , Stewards , and all officers of the lodge .

The W . M ., in proposing the toast of The Ladies , sitd that that was the toast of the evening . He was sure it would be received by all with the utmost enthusiasm , for the brethren were always happy in the society of the ladies , and he was sure that they would ever be welcomed by the members of the Southern Star Lodge . With that favourite toast he would couple the name of Bro . the Rev . H . V . Tyrrel , Chaplain of the Cornish Lodge .

In responding , Bro . TYRREL said he had no idea when he entered the room that surh a task would be imposed upon him , but the W . M . having laid his commands , he would endeavour in some way to perform his duty—and in a very humorous and able manner he did so . He supposed that the reason why he was selected for that delicate task was that he vvas a modest , young , unmarried cur . ite , who would be supposed to know so much about the ladies , and who , belonging , as the small boy once said , to neither the masculine , feminine , nor neuter , but to the " clergyman" gender , would , of all the company , be the most likely to please

both ladies and gentlemen . Among other matters , he mentioned that since he had arrived , he had found out that he was in the immediate presence of a lady , who , he thought , held an unique position with regard to Masonry . He referred to Mrs . J . Austin , wife of the Secretary of the lodge , who was the daughter , sister , wife , mother , and aunt of Freemasons , and he thought that if in a few years all the ladies present could show such a record as that , there would be no doubt of the success and stability of the Southern Star Lodge . In conclusion , he tendered , on behalf of the ladies , their sincere thanks for a most enjoyable evening .

In giving the toast of "The Past Masters , the W . M . mentioned he . had received from all the greatest kindness and help during his year of office . They had conscientiously worked and earned the thanks and praise of those present . He coupled with the toast the names of Bros . R . E . Clarke , P . M ., a founder ; T . F . Knibb , I . P . M . ; and J . Bunker , P . M . Bros . R . E . CLARKE and T . F . KNIBB replied in a few well-chosen and cordial words , and thanked the W . M . for his testimony to the Past Masters .

Bro . J . BUNKER gave some very interesting statistics concerning the Masonic Institutions , the number of children admitted into the Schools , and the successes attained by them . He put forward strongly the claims of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and , from figures that he quoted , pointed out specially to the ladies and non-brethren present that genuine good was done by the Charities of the Craft . He heartily thanked the ladies and visitors for the interest they had taken in the welfare of the Southern Star Lodge .

The toast of " The Visiting Brethren " was proposed by the W . M ., who stated that it was always a pleasure and an honour to the members ot the lodge to give a hearty welcome to their visitors , and he hoped they would come again . He coupled with the toast the names of Bros . Todd , P . M . ; King , and Knifton . These brethren most ably responded , tendering their thank ' s to the W . M . and brethren , and expressing the wish that all lodges would endeavour to follow the example of hospitality that that lodge had set .

An English-made leathern purse , with silver fittings , was presented to each lady visitor . The following inscription was stamped in gold upon every purse : " Souvenir from the Southern Star Lodge , No . 1158 . Jan . 28 , 18 9 6 . Bro . J . Hands , W . M . " A choice selection of music was rendered by Miss Alice Motterway , Miss Moore , Bro . Robert Miles , Bro . George De Pledge , Mr . Harry Hudson , and Signor Alcepti , Bro . A . Briscoe , P . P . G . O . Surrey , presided at the piano . Professor Du Val gave an interesting entertainment of drawing room migic . Propositions for joining and initiation were made , and after " Good wishes" from the visitors had been tendered , the proceedings terminated in the usual way .

York Lodge , No . 236 . The celebration of the annual festival and installation of the W . M . elect of the above lodge took place at the Masonic Hall , Duncombe-place , York , on Monday , the 20 th ult ., when there was a large attendance of members and visitors from the other city lodges , and of brethren within the Province of North and East Yorkshire .
