Liverpool Dramatic Lodge , No . 1609 . The January meeting of the membeis of the above lodge has for years proved the principal Masonic gathering of the year in Liverpool , as the result of the presence of so many brethren in the city during the full flow of the pantomime season . one of them knew the great things he had done for Freemasonry and the Charities , and he could not say too much in his praise . Bro . VV . M . Stiles , G . Treas ., responded in a brief , but eloquent speech , eulogising the great services rendered by Bros . Lord Lathom and Lord Mount Edgcumbe to the Craft , and he appreciated the honour of his mme having been associated with the toast .
In proposing "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " Bro . A . H . Cole , I . P . M ., stated that the VV . M . had set a splendid example in brevity , and he would be brief . The toast would , he felt sure , be received with the same amount of pleasure as he had in giving it . Bro . Jefferies began at the bottom rung of the ladder , and he had 1 o v reached the height which all Masons should attain , and there was no doubt that ne would make one of the best Masters of tbe good old Royal Savoy Lodge . Bro . T . Jefferies , VV . M ., on rising to respond , had a very hearty welom :. He
thanked Bro . Cole most sincerely for his kind words , and the members for their greeting . He was proud to be their Master by their unanimous vote , and he would leave no stone unturned to help keep the lodge to the front . He was going up as Steward for the Old People , and if the members supported his list it would be evidence that they did not regret their choice in electing him . The W . M . then asked the Sec , Bro . Capt . Knightley , to take round his list , and it was subsequently announced that the amount subscribed that night was £ 51 ts ., for which the W . M . is to be congratulated .
In submitting the toast of "The Installing Master , Bro . A . H . Cole , and Past Masters , " the W . M . stated that all those who had seen the working of Bro . Cole , the Installing Master , and those who were privileged to witness the whole of it , could testify to its excellence . Then there was Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . M ., who was always energetic in the cause of Masonry , and the more one knew him the more one liked him . Bro . Scurrah had taken up as Steward the largest amount for the Boys—his first venturewhen he was credited with 600 guineas , which was very good for a maiden effort . He also mentioned Bro . R . Ross in happy terms , and in referring to Bro . Capt . Knightley ,
P . M ., who had been described as a maid of all work , he said he was a very genial fellow , and one who had done good service for the lodge . He coupled with the toast the names of Bros . A . H . Cole , \ V . A . Scurrah , and R . Ross . In response , Bro . A . H . Cole , I . P . M ., said that he acknowledged the kind words of the W . M . which he appreciated , and if at any time he desired his assistance he would be only too glad to help in any way . He ( Bro . Cole ) had had a very happy time in the chair , and the hearty way he had been received more than realised his expectations . Bros . W . A . Scurrah , P . M ., and R . Ross , P . M ., also replied , but in very brief terms .
The W . M . proposed "The Visitors , " observing that all who had attended thelodge must know that their " guests were always welcome . They were honoured that night with 45 visitors , and he hoped they were all enjoying themselves . He coupled the names of Bros . W . Dawson , W . M . 7 SS ; J . T . Saunders , W . M . 1507 ; W . Day , W . M . 1790 ; A . Bentley , W . M . 1815 ; A . M . Parsons , W . M . 2205 ; and J . N . Hare , the latter who proposed the W . M . in the Craft . Bro . W . Dawson responded , thanking the VV . M . and members for the kind way the
visitors had been received and entertained . He was glad to have had the pleasure of witnessing Bro . Cole ' s work as Installing Master , but it was hardly necessary for him to refer to the excellent working of the Grand Treasurer . He was delighted to see his old friend , Bro . Geo . Thompson , invested as J . W . Bro . J . T . Saunders stated that it had been his happy lot to attend their installation meetings for several years , and it was always a great pleasure to be present . The working was excellent , and the visitors had been royally entertained .
Bros . W . Day , W . M . 1790 ; A . Bentley , W . M . 1 S 15 ; and A . M . Parsons , W . M . 2206 , also acknowledged the toast in some capital speeches . Bro . J . N . Hare said that he was not well , but he had made an effort to get there from a long distance , and he was glad to be present to see Bro . Jefferies , who was one of his oldest and best friends , installed as W . M . At the request of the W . M ., Bro . A . H . Cole , I . P . M ., gave "The Treasurer and Secretary . " He said that in toasting the Treasurer , Bro . VV . M . Stiles , was like
painting the lily . His great qualities were known to the whole of England , or he would not now be the Grand Treasurer . The members knew that he had a large heart , and he was beloved by them all . Then , as to the Secretary , Bro . Captain Knightley , he wis honoured by being better known as the maid-of-all-work , because he was never happy unless he was doing something useful for the lodge . Bro . W . M . Stiles , G . Ireas ., was enthusiastically received on rising to respond , He stated that he wanted to see the lodge prosper . Their difficulties had been
surmounted , and now he felt sure that there was a great prospect for the lodge . The W . M ., Bro . Jefferies , was one of his dearest friends , as was Bro . Cole , who had installed his successor in a praiseworthy manner , and if ever he ( Bro . Cole ) installed anyone else , it would not be possible for him to do it better than he had performed the ceremony that evening . He would leave to Bro . Captain Knightley—one of the best men in the world—to add what he had left unsaid in acknowledging the toast of the Treasurer and Secretary . Bro . Captain Knightley , P . M ., Sec , also responded , and siid that they had been told he was the maid-of-all-work . and he was croud of that title . He would do . as he
hoped he had done in the past , his duty fearlessly and without favour , but with one object—to promote the interests of the good old Koyal Savoy Lodge , which he dearly loved . The next toast was "The Officers , " the W . M . remarking that a Master , however competent he might be , could not be a success without an efficient staff , and he was sure that those he had appointed were of the right sort . He made special mention of
Bro . J . Pratt , S . W ., who would not be found wanting in anyway when he went into the chair , and as to Bro . Geo . Thompson , J . W ., he had been a most zealous worker and if he had been called to higher office he would have been ready . He also referred to Bro . W . A . Scurrah , who was a splendid Mason and perfect in the ritual and he was pleased to have him as one of his officsrs . He joined with the toast the names of Bros . Pratt , S . VV ., and Thompson , J . W .
In responding , Bro . J . Pratt , S . W ., thanked the W . M . for his kind remarks and said he would endeavour to carry out his new duties with satisfaction to the W . M . and the members . Bro . Geo . Thompson , J . VV ., said that he was honoured by being appointed J . W ., and he would do his utmost to assist the W . M . and to promote the interests of thelodge . Bro . John Bishop , J . D ., also replied . He stated that he very reluctantly took office because he felt there were many of the members more competent , but still as the W . M .
had insisted upon his taking the office of J . D . he would endeavour to do his best . The Tyler ' s toast brought to a close a most successful and pleasant meeting , which was carried out in every detail without the slightest hitch . The vocal and musical entertainment was one of the very best and thoroughly enjoyed by all . The following took part : Bros . J . Sandbrook , Harry Lee , Herbert Emlyn , F . Russell , and Mr . Will Ballard . Mr . Leslie Smith ably presided at the pianoforte .
Cordwainer Ward Lodge , No . 2241 . The January meeting was held at the Cannon-street Hotel , when Brj , C J . Wilkinson-Pimbury , VV . M ., presided . The business before the lodge consisted in passing Bros . Walmisley , Terry , Love , and Johnson . The ceremony was well rendered . There were present Bros . Potter , I . P . M . ; H . J . Adams , P . G . S . B ., Treas . ; H . Lovegrove , ( Sec . ; J . A . Soper , J . W . ; W , T . Buck , P . M . ; Alderman Vaughan Morgan , and many others . The business of the lodge was followed by a banquet .

He had a kind and appropriate word for each officer , and in investing Bro . VV . M . Stiles , G . Treas ., as Treasurer , he observed that it did not often fall to the lot of a W . M . to have the privilege and great honour of plating tine blue over the purple . The following brethren are the officers for the ensuing year : Bros . J . Pratt , S . VV . ; Geo . Thompson , J . one of them knew the great things he had done for Freemasonry and the Charities , and he could not say too much in his praise . Bro . VV .
