THE LONDON GENERAL PORTERS ' BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION .

The 19 th Anniversary Festival of this excellent Institution took place at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , on Friday , the 30 th ult . Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Evans occupied the chair , and among the numerous company of guests which supported him were Bros . Alderman Cowan ,

Sheriff Clarke , F . _ T . Isitt , Under-Sheriff Rose-Innes , Renals , Pannell , Major Joseph , and W . T . Rickwood . After the loyal toasts had been proposed and honoured , and Bro . Major Joseph had returned thanks for " The Army , Navy , and Reserve Forces , " The CHAIRMAN , in giving the toast of the evening , pleaded most effectively the interests of the Association ,

pointing out how worthy it was to be supported , and how admirably its funds were managed . He stated that while the expenditure amounted to £ 3 , 300 , the whole income from sources that were permanent , or could be relied upon , was under £ 1600 , so that between £ 1700 and £ 1800 must be obtained so as to enable the Executive to carry out the purposes of the Charity . The speech was

received with loud applause and the subscriptions announced in response reached £ 2254 , of which no less than £ 1338 had been raised by thc Chairman and Stewards from his house . The other toasts included that of "The Chairman , " proposed in complimentary terms by Bro . F . T . Isitt ; " The Corporation , " for which Bros . Alderman

Cowan and Sheriff Clarke responded ; " The Livery Companies , " proposed by Bro . Under-Sheriff Innes ; "The Stewards , " for which Bro . R . A . Morgan with others returned thanks , and " The Secretary , " which was acknowledged in person by Bro . Rickwood . The evening passed off most successfully .

The Queen held a Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday , at which the Prince and Princess of Wales , the Imperial Crown Princessof Germany , the Duke of Connaught , and other members of the Royal Family were present . REVIEWS

VOLUNTEER YEAR BOOK , ALMANACK , AND DIARY FOR 1 SS 6 . First Year of Publication . London : ILIFFE & SON , 98 , Fleet-street , E . C . The editor is to be congratulated on the completeness and apparent accuracy of the information he has brought together in the 264 pp . of this new and useful annual . As far as we have been able to trace , there is hardly an

institution connected with the Volunteers , or a subject connected with military organisation and equipment , which does not receive some amount of notice , lt contains also some capital diagrams for recording " class firing" and other purposes , while the calendar is at the same time a valuable record of battles . It is surprising that such an annual has not appeared before , but now that it has been issued , we trust the Volunteers will support it loyally .

THE GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE ORDER 'OF ROYAL ARCH MASONS OF ENGLAND . We have no intention of reviewing the revised code of Regulations for the Government of Royal Arch Masons in England ; it has been already most carefully considered in these columns . We may mention , however , that it has been published , and is in course of issue at the present time .

THE EMIGRANT . 21 , Furnival Street , Holborn , E . C . This new journal , edited by Bro . Canon Cooper of the Church Emigration Society , to judge from its first two numbers , seems likely to meet the requirements of those whose interests it is intended to support and promote . Its articles are well written , and the information it contains is both valuable and abundant . A special feature of the society of which this serial is the oiean . is the introduction

of a Masonic department , not indeed for promoting the study of Masonry , but for the purpose of obtaining from Masonic sources in the different Colonies information and statistics likely to be of value to intending emigrants . Moreover , it devotes a little corner occasionally to Masonic Memoranda ; so that , apart from the inherent merits our young contemporary has already developed , we trust " The Emigrant" may have before it a long career of success .
