Approaching Festival Of The Royal Masonic Institution For Boys.
APPROACHING FESTIVAL OF THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .
We are now within three weeks of the day appointed for the third and last of the great Anniversary Festivals , that on behalf of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , which will take place at the Crystal Palace , on Wednesday , the 26 th instant , under the
presidency of Bro . the Right Hon . W . W . B . BEACH , M . P ., Prov . G . Master of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . We all know how great has been the sympathy of this distinguished brother with all our Charitable Institutions , and how signal has been
the success which has resulted whenever he has occupied the position of Chairman at one of these important gatherings . There is no need for us , therefore , to say more than that we both hope and believe that an equal , and possibly even a
greater , measure of success will attend his efforts in respect of this particular Festival . Bro . BEACH has been for so long a period one of the most prominent among our rulers , and is so highly respected everywhere throughout the Craft , that we feel
confident , setting aside for the moment all other motives which influence brethren to contribute , a desire to do honour to one who has been for so long an honour to English Freemasonry will be found among the strongest incentives to a generous support
of his chairmanship . We know also that his Province of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is making great efforts to demonstrate their loyalty to Bro . BEACH and their goodwill towards our Boys' Institution . It is only a fortnight since that we had
the pleasure of reporting a meeting that had been held some days previously at Southampton , and was attended by the representatives of the half-dozen lodges in the district , the object being to promote the success of the
approaching Boys School Festival . In the course of the proceedings it was announced that contributions had been obtained to the amount of / . 157 and would be placed on the lists of sundry brethren who had volunteered their services as
Stewards on the occasion . Other efforts to the same end have heen and are still being made in other parts of the Province , and from our knowledge of what it has done for our Institutions and more especially in aid of the Centenary Festival of this School , we have no doubt that when the time comes it will be

found that Hampshire and the Isle of Wight with its roll of 48 lodges has achieved its purpose of doing honour to whom honour is due , and supporting an Institution which , by the excellence of its work , is proving itself in every way worthy of
support . So , too , as regards the other Provinces and London , Bro . BEACH , as we have said , is known and respected throughout the English Craft , and we feel sure the lodges and brethren will realise that the best way of showing their respect for him
will be to do all in their power to swell the subscription list . There is no need to lay any particular stress upon the manner in which our Boys' School fulfils its duties . Those who had the good fortune to visit the Institution at Wood Green on
Saturday last on the occasion of the Athletic Sports must have been delighted with the manner in which the boys acquitted themselves in their physical exercises , while those who attend the Distribution of Prizes on the 24 th instant , will have equal
reason to be pleased when they hear the reports of what the boys have achieved in the educational contests into which they have entered with the pupils of other middle-class schools . But while the excellence of the training—mental , moral , and
physical—which the boys received is known and admitted on all sides , we must not fail to point out that these results are not obtained without incurring annually an expenditure which is largely in excess of the permanent income of the Institution .
The yearly outlay is , in round figures , about £ 15 , 000 , and the yearly income about £ 2500 , or , perhaps , about £ 3000 . There is thus a large deficiency to be made good every year , and
we are hoping that on the 26 th instant , under Bro . BEACH ' S auspices , not only will this deficiency be made good , but also that a further sum will be forthcoming for investment , and the consequent increase of the permanent income .
A Remarkable Tribute.
A REMARKABLE TRIBUTE .
Of the many tributes to the lamented Queen Victoria , one especially stands out beyond the ordinary , and claims the particular attention and sympathy of the Masonic fraternity . General John Corson Smith , P . G . M . of Illinois , U . S . A ., Representative from the Grand Lodge of England , as the
esteemed President of the Masonic Veterans of his State ( known far and wide for its racy and illustrated Annual Reports ) , determined that the Society of Veterans should send a fitting memorial of her Majesty , and so had one prepared , which may lay claim to be in not a few respects a unique and appropriate tribute to the deceased monarch .
The memorial was engrossed on the finest vellum , in quarto size , book form , and bound in black sealskin ; on cover is a plate of solid gold , beautifully chased , having "Edward VII . " inlaid with blue enamel . The title reads :
" In Memonam . Victoria Queen of Great Britain and Ireland
and Empress of India . May 24 , 18 IQ ,
June 20 , 18 37 , January 22 , 1901 . " The text was composed by General Smith , and has hi ghly p leased his friends on both sides of the " little pond . "
