Lake ' s list as Steward ; ^ 10 to the Gladsmuir Lodge , towards defraying the expenses of the meeting ; and £ 10 to the High Barnet Schools . It was also agreed that the Provincial Grand Lodge Calendar should be continued , while a vote of thanks was passed to the Rev . R . R . Hutton for having permitted the use of the Schools .

The rest of the business having been despatched , Provincial Grand Lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Red Lion Hotel , where a banquet was served , the chair being occupied by the Prov . Grand Master . The usual toasts were proposed and honoured , the circumstances under which the meeting was held at Barnet instead of , as originally proposed , at Hemel Hempstead , being referred to in the course of the speeches .

The PROV . G . SECRETARY reported that all but one of the brethren appointed to office at the annual Provincial Grand Lodge had assumed their rank , and that the fees of honour had been paid . During the past year there had been 58 advancements , and after allowing for losses by death and otherwise , there had been a net gain during the year of 31 . The number of members in the province was 452 , as against 430 at the end

of the previous year . On August 6 th the province was honoured by a visit from the Grand Mark Master Mason and the Grand Mark Lodge of England . The arrangements were made by a Committee of Provincial Grand Officers acting in conjunction with St . George ' s Lodge , No . 15 . The attendance of distinguished brethren was large , the meeting was very successful , and the Earl of Kintore and the Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge expressed themselves highly pleased with the welcome given them .

The PROV . G . TREASURER reported that the receipts had been £ 6 S , and the payments £ 27 ios „ leaving a balance of £ 40 9 s . Both these reports were unanimously received and adopted . The PROV . G . MASTER said he had the pleasure of informing the brethren that a very zealous officer of their province , V . W . Bro . the Rev . T . W . Lemon , had been appointed to the high office of Grand Chaplain of

the Order . He heartily congratulated Bro Lemon on his appointment , and was sure the brethren would join in offering their congratulations . ( Cheers . ) V . W . Bro . LEMON acknowledged the compliment paid him . The Board of General Purposes recommended that £ 5 be voted to the Devon Educational Fund , £ 5 to the Benevolent Fund for Aged and Decayed Masons , £ 5 to the Boys' School , and £ < to the Girls' School , and

that a sum not exceeding £ 5 be devoted to the purchase of a banner for the Provincial Grand Lodge , the design of the banner to be left to the P . G . M ., the D . P . G . M ., and Bros . Vincent Bird and the Rev . T . W . Lemon . This report was received and adopted , with the amendments that 10 guineas be voted for the banner , and that the contributions to the Charities be guineas instead of pounds .

Bro . D . Cross , 169 , was unanimously elected Prov . Grand Treasurer for llie year . The Prov . Grand Master then invested the following brethren as the oi ' l . cers : —

Thanks were voted to the brethren of Lodge Friendship for the admirable manner in which they had provided for the reception and accommodation of the Prov . Grand Lodge .

In the evening a large party of the brethren dined together at the Royal Hotel , Devonport ; the Prov . Grand Master presided . The catering was very satisfactory . The loyal and Masonic toasts were given and replied to , and vocal and instrumental music interspersed with the speeches contributed not a little to the enjoyment of a very pleasant evening .

Provincial Grand Mark Lodge Of Berks And Oxon.

PROVINCIAL GRAND MARK LODGE OF BERKS AND OXON .

The annual Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons for the Province of Berks and Oxon was held at Abingdon on Wednesday , the 29 th ult ., and numerously attended , each of the six lodges—the Porchcster , University , Abbey , Leopold , Alfred , and Jersey—being well represented . Much success attended the day ' s proceedings , the only drawback , being the

absence of the Provincial Grand Master , the Earl of Jersey , who has been compelled to leave England for a few weeks to recruit his health . In his lordship ' s absence , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Stephens , presided , supported by the acting Deputy Provincial Grand Master and a

goodly number of officers of Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge . Deep regret was expressed at the cause of the absence of Lord Jersey , whose letter to Bro . Stephens was read at the opening of Provincial Grand Lodge .

The Prov . G . Sec , Bro . PULLEY , presented an interesting report upon the state of the province , showing a satisfactory increase in the number of members . during the past 12 months . The province and all the lodges were represented at the recent Festival of the Mark Benevolent Fund at the Crystal Palace , the Stewards representing them taking up about £ 82 ,

Bro . E . J . Trendell , having resigned office as Provincial Grand I reasuver , was cordially thanked for his past services , and Bro . John Tomkina was elected to fill that position .

The brethren were unanimous in conveying to Earl Jersey their hearty congratulations to his lordship on having been appointed by the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , to preside over the Craft Masons in the Province of Oxfordshire .

Various matters affecting the welfare of Mark Masonry were considered , and the brethren of the Porchester Lodge gave a cordial invitation to the Provincial Grand Lodge to meet next summer at Newbury . The invitation was at once accepted by Bro . Stephens , on behalf of the Provincial Grand Lodge . The Provincial Grand Officers for the ensuing year were appointed and invested as follows :

following his liberal practice on former occasions of a like nature , invited the brethren to his charming residence , "The Abbey , " in the grounds of which luncheon was provided in an elegant style , with an " ad libitum " supply of champagne and other choice wines . The guests included , besides the Mark Masons , many of Bro . TrendclPs private friends , and among those seated at the head table were Mr . J . C . Clarke , M . P ., and his son , Mr . Heber Clarke ( the Mayor of Abingdon ) .

The usual toast list was gone through , and "The Health of the Much Esteemed Host , Bro . Trendell , " proposed by the DETUTY PROV . GRANIJ MASTER , was drunk amidst enthusiastic cheering . Several hours were agreeably spent in the Abbey grounds , and in the evening the highly successful gathering broke up . The musical arrangements , under the direction [ of Bro . Rowley , were excellent .

Thanks were voted to the brethren of Lodge Friendship for the admirable manner in which they had provided for the reception and accommodation of the Prov . Grand Lodge .

In the evening a large party of the brethren dined together at the Royal Hotel , Devonport ; the Prov . Grand Master presided . The catering was very satisfactory . The loyal and Masonic toasts were given and replied to , and vocal and instrumental music interspersed with the speeches contributed not a little to the enjoyment of a very pleasant evening .

Provincial Grand Mark Lodge Of Berks And Oxon.

PROVINCIAL GRAND MARK LODGE OF BERKS AND OXON .

The annual Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons for the Province of Berks and Oxon was held at Abingdon on Wednesday , the 29 th ult ., and numerously attended , each of the six lodges—the Porchcster , University , Abbey , Leopold , Alfred , and Jersey—being well represented . Much success attended the day ' s proceedings , the only drawback , being the

absence of the Provincial Grand Master , the Earl of Jersey , who has been compelled to leave England for a few weeks to recruit his health . In his lordship ' s absence , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Stephens , presided , supported by the acting Deputy Provincial Grand Master and a

goodly number of officers of Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge . Deep regret was expressed at the cause of the absence of Lord Jersey , whose letter to Bro . Stephens was read at the opening of Provincial Grand Lodge .

The Prov . G . Sec , Bro . PULLEY , presented an interesting report upon the state of the province , showing a satisfactory increase in the number of members . during the past 12 months . The province and all the lodges were represented at the recent Festival of the Mark Benevolent Fund at the Crystal Palace , the Stewards representing them taking up about £ 82 ,

Bro . E . J . Trendell , having resigned office as Provincial Grand I reasuver , was cordially thanked for his past services , and Bro . John Tomkina was elected to fill that position .

The brethren were unanimous in conveying to Earl Jersey their hearty congratulations to his lordship on having been appointed by the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , to preside over the Craft Masons in the Province of Oxfordshire .

Various matters affecting the welfare of Mark Masonry were considered , and the brethren of the Porchester Lodge gave a cordial invitation to the Provincial Grand Lodge to meet next summer at Newbury . The invitation was at once accepted by Bro . Stephens , on behalf of the Provincial Grand Lodge . The Provincial Grand Officers for the ensuing year were appointed and invested as follows :

following his liberal practice on former occasions of a like nature , invited the brethren to his charming residence , "The Abbey , " in the grounds of which luncheon was provided in an elegant style , with an " ad libitum " supply of champagne and other choice wines . The guests included , besides the Mark Masons , many of Bro . TrendclPs private friends , and among those seated at the head table were Mr . J . C . Clarke , M . P ., and his son , Mr . Heber Clarke ( the Mayor of Abingdon ) .

The usual toast list was gone through , and "The Health of the Much Esteemed Host , Bro . Trendell , " proposed by the DETUTY PROV . GRANIJ MASTER , was drunk amidst enthusiastic cheering . Several hours were agreeably spent in the Abbey grounds , and in the evening the highly successful gathering broke up . The musical arrangements , under the direction [ of Bro . Rowley , were excellent .
