THE MELBOURNE CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION . — In a recent sitting of the Federal Council , Prince Bismarck submittei a proposal that as the interesis of the German commercial community were involved in an important degree in the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition of iSSS ,

steps should be taken for the representation of the Empire at the Exhibition by a special commissioner , and for affording some material assistance to German exhibitors by a partial defrayal of the costs of instalment or superintendence .

A Provincial Grand Lodge of Cumberland and Westmorland will be held at Whitehaven , on Friday , the 21 st inst . The R . W . the Prov . Grand Master the Earl of Bective will preside . A Provincial Grand Chapter of Cheshire will be held at the London and North-Western Hotel , Crewe , on Thursday , the 13 th instant . The Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Rite will hold a convocation at 33 , Goldensquare , on Tuesday , the nth inst ., at 4 . 45 p . m .

The annual supper of the Chaucer Lodge of Instruction will take place on Tuesday , November ist , at the Old White Hart Hotel , Borough . Bro . Lord Charles Beresford , M . P ., and Lady Charles Beresford have been among the numerous guests recently staying with Lady Alfred Paget at Loch Liltie , Inverness .

The Lady Mayoress , Lady Hanson , will hold her final receptions at the Mansion House , on Tuesday , the iSth instant , and Tuesday , the ist prox ., at from 3 p . m . to 6 p . m . Bro . Sir James Fergusson , M . P ., presided on the 20 th ult ., at the annual dinner of the Girvan Agricultural

Association , and referred to the exceedingly depressed condition of agricultural interests . It is announced that Prince Albert Victor ol Wales will join the gth Lancers now quartered at York , for a period of six or seven months , and consequently the regiment will remain in its present quarters tor another year .

On Thursday , the 29 th ult ., Bro . General Lord Wolseley unveiled a monument erected in St . Michael's Church , Stone , Staffordshire , to the memory of the Earl of St . Vincent , who died of the wounds he received at the battle of Abu Klea .

The Gladsmuir Lodge , No . 1385 , Barnet , Herts , resumed its meetings after the summer holidays at the Red Lion Hotel , Barnet , on Friday , the 30 th ult . The business appointed to be done included the initiation of two candidates and the consideration of the revised by-laws . COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET TO BRO . SIR JOHN

PULESTON . —On Wednesday Bro . Sir John Puleston , the senior member for Divonport , was entertained at a public banquet in that borough in recognition of the honour of knighthood which was recently conferred upon him . The banquet was presided over by the Mayor , Mr . Ryder . 'Ihe company , numbering nearly 500 , included Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Bro . Sir E . Clarke , Solicitor-General .

The Crown Prince of Germany , during the close of his sojourn at Toblach , in the Tyrol , caught a severe cold , and was at once ordered by Bro . Sir Morrell Mackenzie to go further south . His Imperial Highness is now fast recovering at Venice , and will shortly make a move to Baveno on the Lago Maggiore . It is generally expected that , notwithstanding the Emperor ' s anxiety for his son ' s return to Germany , his Imperial Highness will winter in North Italy .

The Quarterly Convocation of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Pennsylvania was held at the Masonic Hall , Philadelphia , on Thuisday , the Sth ult , Comp . Matthew H . Henderson , G . H . P ., presided , and was well supported by the Grand Officers , Past Grand Officers , District Deputy G . H . Priests and the respresentatives of chapters . The Degree of R . A . M . was exemplified by the G . H . P . and his Grand Officers .

BIRKBECK . INSTITUTION . —On Wednesday Bro . Charles Dickens gave what we believe is his last reading prior to his departure for America before the members of this Institution . The Theatre of the building was completely filled , and Bro . Dickens had , as is always the case

at the Birkbeck , a highly intelligent and appreciative audience . The selections he gave were from " David Copperfield , " and "The Pickwick Papers , " from the latter of which Bro . Dickens chose " Bob Sawyer ' s Party . " The reception given to the reader was most cordial , and the evening ' s entertainment was successful in every respect .

A meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Isle of Man was held in the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , the 29 th ult . Bro . Major J . S . Goldie-Taubman , Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master , presided . The only business brought forward was the making of arrangements for the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge , and the Grand

Master decided that it should be held in October , in Douglas . It was also arranged that a banquet should be held in connection with the proceedings . At the annual meeting , the officers for the year will be invested , and it is expected that arrangements will be made for the establishment of a Charity Fund for local Masonic purposes . We may add that the officers will be the same as at present ,

with one exception , that of the Provincial Grand Steward from St . Maughold Lodge , Ramsey . The theatre which has been built for Bro . Edward Terry in the Strand will be opened in the course of next week . On Monday last , the workmen who had been engaged upon the construction of the building , were entertained at dinner by Bro . Terry at the St . James ' s

Restaurant , Piccadilly . About 150 workmen sat down and some of Bro . Terry ' s personal friends were also present , including Bros . Lionel Brough , Walter Emden ( the architect of the theatre ) , Chapman , and J . D . Langton . After dinner , Bro . Terry proposed " The Health of the Queen , " which was received with great enthusiasm . bro . Brough then proposed " Success to

Terry ' s Theatre , together with the Health of Bro . Terry , " who made a very humorous speech in response , " The Health of the Architect , Bro . Emden , " was then given by the Chairman , and "The Healths of the Contractors and Workmen " followed . During the evening several songs and recitations were given , Bro . E . Terry delighting all present with his account of the Cornish jury .

Richardson estimates that in England and VVales nearly 50 , 000 persons a year die from

alcohol , a tenth of those who die from all diseases together . A grand Masonic ceremonial took place at Simla on the ioth ult ., in connection with the installation of Bro . VV . E . Parker as District Grand Master of the Punjab . The members of the Kilburn Lodge of

Instruction , will meet at Bro . G . Moy ' s , the Shirland Hotel , Shirland-road , on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., at 3 o ' clock , p . m . Bro . Alderman De Keyser , Lord Mayor elect , has appointed as his private secretary Bro . William J . Soulsby , who has held the office during the last 12 Mayoralties .

The Queen ' s Westminster and Marylebone Lodge of Instruction , which meets at the Criterion , is now under the able Preceptorship of Bro . Cleghorn , P . M . 1287 . We are glad to hearthat the telegramsand letters from all parts of the world conveying messages of congratulations to Bro . Alderman De Keyser , Lord Mayor elect ,

had reached nearly a thousand up to Wednesday evening , The Duchess of Connaught is expected to embark at Brindisi for Suez on board the P . and O . Company ' s Steamer Tanjore , on the 31 st instant , and will continue her journey by the Coromandel from Suez to Bombay , where

she will rejoin her husband . Sir Knight Edward W . Price , G . C . of the Grand Commandery of New Jersey , early last month gave instruc tions for a grand parade , drill , and inspection of the various Commanderies in his jurisdiction , to be held at Asbury Park , on Thursday , the 6 th inst .

Bro . Alderman Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., Lord Mayor , presided at the opening of the winter session of Middlesex Hospital , on Monday , and distributed the prizes to the successful students . His lord = hip had previously opened the new college buildings and residential medical college .

Bro . M . De Heredia , French Minister of Public Works , arrived at the Grand Hotel , Trafalgar-square , on Monday morning ft-jm Glasgow , where he had been inspecting the decks . In the evening he dined with the French Ambassador at Albert Gate , and the following morning left for Paris .

The session of the Stability Lodge of Instruction for 1 SS 7 and iSSS , will commence this evening ( Friday ) , at 6 p . m ., at the Masons Hall Tavern , Masons-avenue Coleman-street , E . G ., and will be continued on every subsequent Friday evening from 6 till 3 p . m ., until the 30 th March , 1 S 8 S . Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master , who is on his way to Australia , has met with a very hearty

reception at Cape Town and Kimberley , at the latter of which , as Chancellor of the Cape University , he conferred degrees on many of the graduates . Bro . the Lord Mayor has accepted an invitation from the Mayor of Manchester , on behalf of the Mayors of Lancashire and Cheshire , to a banquet which will take place on Monday , the 31 st inst ., in recognition of the hospitality and courtesy they have received from his lordship .

POSTAL SERVICE I ' OR CHINA AND JAPAN . — From information received by the Postmaster-General it appears that tbe dates of departure of the steamers from Vancouver for China and Japan have been altered , and that the next steamers on that line will leave Vancouver on

November 5 th and 23 rd next . Assuming that a corresponding alteration has been made in the dates on which the mails leave Montreal , letters , & c , specially superscribed "vid Montreal , " , should be posted in this country about 17 days earlier .

At the regular meeting of the brethren of the Lodge , St . John , No . 70 , held on Tuesday , the 4 th inst ., at the Huyshe Temple , Plymouth , an interesting old copperplate engraving of large size and handsomely framed , was presented to the lodge . The engraving represents a large

collection of Mason emblems , Craft , and H . R . Arch . A panel on the frame bears the following inscription : " Presented to Lodge St . John , 70 , by the W . Bro . the Rev . T . W . Lemon , M . A Provincial Grand Chapter of Cheshire will be held at the London and North-Western Hotel , Crewe , on Thursday , the 13 th instant . The Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Rite will hold a convocation at 33 , Goldensquare , on Tuesday , the nth inst ., at 4 . 45 p . m .

The annual supper of the Chaucer Lodge of Instruction will take place on Tuesday , November ist , at the Old White Hart Hotel , Borough . Bro . Lord Charles Beresford , M . P ., and Lady Charles Beresford have been among the numerous guests recently staying with Lady Alfred Paget at Loch Liltie , Inverness .

The Lady Mayoress , Lady Hanson , will hold her final receptions at the Mansion House , on Tuesday , the iSth instant , and Tuesday , the ist prox ., at from 3 p . m . to 6 p . m . Bro . Sir James Fergusson , M . P ., presided on the 20 th ult ., at the annual dinner of the Girvan Agricultural

On Thursday , the 29 th ult ., Bro . General Lord Wolseley unveiled a monument erected in St . Michael's Church , Stone , Staffordshire , to the memory of the Earl of St . Vincent , who died of the wounds he received at the battle of Abu Klea .

The Gladsmuir Lodge , No . 1385 , Barnet , Herts , resumed its meetings after the summer holidays at the Red Lion Hotel , Barnet , on Friday , the 30 th ult . PULESTON . —On Wednesday Bro . Sir John Puleston , the senior member for Divonport , was entertained at a public banquet in that borough in recognition of the honour of knighthood which was recently conferred upon him . The banquet was presided over by the Mayor , Mr . Ryder . 'Ihe company , numbering nearly 500 , included Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Bro . Sir E . Clarke , Solicitor-General .

The Crown Prince of Germany , during the close of his sojourn at Toblach , in the Tyrol , caught a severe cold , and was at once ordered by Bro . Sir Morrell Mackenzie to go further south . His Imperial Highness is now fast recovering at Venice , and will shortly make a move to Baveno on the Lago Maggiore . It is generally expected that , notwithstanding the Emperor ' s anxiety for his son ' s return to Germany , his Imperial Highness will winter in North Italy .

The Quarterly Convocation of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Pennsylvania was held at the Masonic Hall , Philadelphia , on Thuisday , the Sth ult , Comp . Matthew H . Henderson , G . H . P ., presided , and was well supported by the Grand Officers , Past Grand Officers , District Deputy G . H . Priests and the respresentatives of chapters . The Degree of R . A . M . was exemplified by the G . H . P . and his Grand Officers .

BIRKBECK . INSTITUTION . —On Wednesday Bro . Charles Dickens gave what we believe is his last reading prior to his departure for America before the members of this Institution . The Theatre of the building was completely filled , and Bro . Dickens had , as is always the case

at the Birkbeck , a highly intelligent and appreciative audience . The selections he gave were from " David Copperfield , " and "The Pickwick Papers , " from the latter of which Bro . Dickens chose " Bob Sawyer ' s Party . " The reception given to the reader was most cordial , and the evening ' s entertainment was successful in every respect .

A meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Isle of Man was held in the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , the 29 th ult . Bro . Major J . S . Goldie-Taubman , Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master , presided . The only business brought forward was the making of arrangements for the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge , and the Grand

Master decided that it should be held in October , in Douglas . It was also arranged that a banquet should be held in connection with the proceedings . At the annual meeting , the officers for the year will be invested , and it is expected that arrangements will be made for the establishment of a Charity Fund for local Masonic purposes . We may add that the officers will be the same as at present ,

with one exception , that of the Provincial Grand Steward from St . Maughold Lodge , Ramsey . The theatre which has been built for Bro . Edward Terry in the Strand will be opened in the course of next week . On Monday last , the workmen who had been engaged upon the construction of the building , were entertained at dinner by Bro . Terry at the St . James ' s

Restaurant , Piccadilly . About 150 workmen sat down and some of Bro . Terry ' s personal friends were also present , including Bros . Lionel Brough , Walter Emden ( the architect of the theatre ) , Chapman , and J . D . Langton . After dinner , Bro . Terry proposed " The Health of the Queen , " which was received with great enthusiasm . bro . Brough then proposed " Success to

Terry ' s Theatre , together with the Health of Bro . Terry , " who made a very humorous speech in response , " The Health of the Architect , Bro . Emden , " was then given by the Chairman , and "The Healths of the Contractors and Workmen " followed . During the evening several songs and recitations were given , Bro . E . Terry delighting all present with his account of the Cornish jury .

she will rejoin her husband . Sir Knight Edward W . Price , G . C . of the Grand Commandery of New Jersey , early last month gave instruc tions for a grand parade , drill , and inspection of the various Commanderies in his jurisdiction , to be held at Asbury Park , on Thursday , the 6 th inst .

Bro . Alderman Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., Lord Mayor , presided at the opening of the winter session of Middlesex Hospital , on Monday , and distributed the prizes to the successful students . His lord = hip had previously opened the new college buildings and residential medical college .

Bro . M . De Heredia , French Minister of Public Works , arrived at the Grand Hotel , Trafalgar-square , on Monday morning ft-jm Glasgow , where he had been inspecting the decks . In the evening he dined with the French Ambassador at Albert Gate , and the following morning left for Paris .

The session of the Stability Lodge of Instruction for 1 SS 7 and iSSS , will commence this evening ( Friday ) , at 6 p . m ., at the Masons Hall Tavern , Masons-avenue Coleman-street , E . POSTAL SERVICE I ' OR CHINA AND JAPAN . — From information received by the Postmaster-General it appears that tbe dates of departure of the steamers from Vancouver for China and Japan have been altered , and that the next steamers on that line will leave Vancouver on

November 5 th and 23 rd next . Assuming that a corresponding alteration has been made in the dates on which the mails leave Montreal , letters , & c , specially superscribed "vid Montreal , " , should be posted in this country about 17 days earlier .

At the regular meeting of the brethren of the Lodge , St . John , No . 70 , held on Tuesday , the 4 th inst ., at the Huyshe Temple , Plymouth , an interesting old copperplate engraving of large size and handsomely framed , was presented to the lodge . The engraving represents a large
