MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS .

The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic llenevolent Institution will-hold their regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday next , the 12 th inst ., at 4 p . m . The Lady Mayoress held one ol the musical afternoons at the Mansion House on Tuesday , at which , in spite of the very unfavourable state of the weather , some 350 guests were present .

The winter sessions of the different medical schools in London were opened on Monday , with the exception of St . George ' s Hospital , when the inaugural lecture was delivered by Dr . R . L . Bowles on Saturday last . Bros . Sir John Pender , Sir James Fergusson , and the other members of the party on board the Eastern Telegraph Company's steamer Mignon , experienced a most cordial reception on the occasion of their recent visit to Lisbon .

The Prince and Princess Henry of Prussia and Prince Waldomar , who arrived in London from Germany on Sunday , left Buckingham Palace via the London and North-Western Lino , for Balmoral on a visit to her Majesty the Oueen .

The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School at Kingston on-Thames held its annual river carnival on Saturday afternoon last . The weather was fine , and there was consequently a large concourse of spectators , who watched the different contests with keen interest .

The directors of the Empire Palace , Limited , have declared the third interim dividend for the present year at the following rates : is . Sd . on each share of £ 1 on which 10 s . has been paid ; 2 s . fid . on each share of £ \ on which 15 s . has been paid , payable on the 10 th inst .

On Saturday last , Bro . Lord Mayor Sir David Evans opened the new commodious baths and wash-houses which the Camberwell Vestry have recently erected in Churchstreet . The large swimming bath is 40 yards long by 12 yards broad , and is lighted by electricity and well ventilated .

A Drawing Room Meeting will be held at the Mansion House , on Friday next , the 14 th instant ., in aid of the London Needlework Guild , at which the Princess Mary , Duchess of Teck , who is a Patroness nf the institution , will be present , accompanied by her daughter , the Princess Victoria .

The meetings of the Hornsey Lodge of Instruction at the White Hart Masonic Rooms , High-street , Lewisham , under the Preceptorship of Bro . A . A . Drew , were resumed for the winter on the 29 th ult . The lodge will now meet regularly every Thursday evening , its ceremonies being rehearsed with musical accompaniment by Bro . Bower , Org ,

Her Majesty has been pleased to accept the gift of an ostrich , which has been forwarded to her by Alimandy S . imadou , a distinguished West African potentate . The bird is described as being a very fine specimen , nearly g feet high , very tame , and is ridden by a black servant , who has been appointed to attend upon it . It will be temporarily placed in the Zoological Gardens .

The Langton Lodge of Instruction will resume work on Thursday , the 13 th instant , at 5 . 30 p . m ., at the "White Hart" Tavern , Abchurch Lane , E . C . The ceremony for rehearsal on that date will be that of passing . It may lie well to note that although the lodge under whose sanction it is woiked has changed its name to the Welcome , the lodge of instruction continues under its old name , the Langton .

I 111 : WIIITSTAIU . K OVSTKR BKIIS . — The free fishers and dredgers of Whitstable have resolved to carry to an issue the sale recently contemplated of their renowned oyster fishery . Reduced receipts on the pait of the corporation , which numbers some 500 members , have created discontent , hence the desire to capitalize their rights . Parliament will , therefore , be asked to sanction the sale of their rights under the charter .

The Queen ' s Buckhounds have commenced forest hunting , the first meet having taken place at the Royal Hotel , Ascot , on Tuesday , the field comprising about 50 ladies and gentlemen , and including Lord Ribblesdale , the new Master , and his predecessor , the Earl of Coventry . The deer gave a capital run past Bagshot towards Frimley and back to Bagshot Sands . These meets are preparatory to the regular season next month .

Up to the present time the proposal that Uro . Lord Mayor Sir David Evans should open a fund at the Man-ion House for the purchase of Nelson ' s old llagship , the Foudroyant , does not appear to have met with much . success , and it is very improbable therefore that his lordship will make a special appeal to the publ- ' c . Nevertheless there is every

probability that the ship will be secured for this country , a syndicate of gentlemen is being formed for the purpose , and if the requisite amount—between £ 5000 and £ 0000—is obtained , the FouJroyant will be brought over and moored in the Thames between Waterloo and lilackfriars Bridges for exhibition .

The inter-county nllc match at the new ranges near Staines resulted in a victory for Gloucestershire over Middlesex and Surrey . The distances were 200 , 500 , and fioo yards , and the aggregate scores were : Gloucestershire 1702 , Surrey 1 I 17 S , and Middlesex 1650 ,. On Saturday last at Wimbledon the annual contest between teams of eight

The Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Cheshire will be held at the Masonic Rooms , Birkenhead , on the 11 th inst ., Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton will preside . It is said that under the will of the late Duke of Sutherland , the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland will receive , in addition to a jointure of £ 15 , 000 a year , an annual income

of upwards of £ 50 , 000 . Captain Lingard , who is in command of the British East Africa Company's troops in Uganda , and has arrived recently in London , had an interview with the directors of the Company on Tuesday and was subsequently in communication with the Foreign Office .

The Princess Louise Marchioness of Lome , accompanied by Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , opened the Aberdeen Infirmary Extension , which has been erected at a cost of £ 30 , 000 in commemoration of the Qneen ' s Jubilee . After the ceremony , the Royal party returned by special train to Ballater en route for Balmoral .

The centenary meeting of the Samaritan Lodge , No . 2 S < 5 , will take place on the nth inst ., at the Mechanics' Hall , Bacup . Bro . Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , Prov . G . M ., will be present on that occasion . A large number of brethren from this and other provinces are expected to attend this most interesting event .

Messrs . Morris and T . B . Slade recently sold at Leigh-on-Sea , 77 plots of freehold land , close to the railway station . The plots were all sold at the average price of £ iS per plot . The attendance of London buyers numbered 300 , who were entertained by the vendor , J . H . Higgins , Esq ., of Lapwater Hall , to an excellent luncheon .

Mr . and Mrs . Gladstone attended the harvest thanksgiving service at Hawarden Parish Church on Thursday night , when the sermon was preached by the Rev . Canon Maccoll . Mr . Gladstone will , as at present arranged , leave Harwarden for Oxford on the 22 nd inst ., and afterwards proceed to London .

The syllabus of the 33 rd session of the Crystal Palace Company's School of Art , Science , and Literature has just been issued . The high standard of former years is fully maintained , and in the Ladies' Division especially great efforts appear to have been made to present a most exhaustive and carefully-prepared programme of studies .

We regret to hear that the Duke of Connaught recently met with an accident while out shooting at Balmoral and sprained his knee . His Royal Highness , however , has been going on favourably , but in order to obtain the necessary rest for the damaged limb , he was under the necessity of cancelling his arrangement to open a new infirmary at Aberdeen on Tuesday .

Very great interest has been taken in the Austro-German military ride , in which a number of German officers rode from Berlin to Vienna , and a number of Austrian officers rode from Vienna to Berlin . The first German officer to reach Vienna was Prince Frederick Leopold , who covered

the distance between the two capitals in 85 ' hours , while Lieutenant Heyl accomplished the journey in S 4 hours 25 minutes . The first Austrian officer to reach Berlin was Lieutenant Miklos , who did the journey in 74 hours 24 minutes , the second Austrian being Lieutenant Csavossy .

Apropos of Freemasonry in the army , which exists in the service , as elsewhere , under perfectly satisfactory and welldefined conditions , there is an amusing tendency at times on the part of Tommy Atkins to form secret societies and attend other likewise unauthorised gatherings ; but when discovered , it is always very firmly suppressed . A writer refers to a case which occurred some years ago in India ,

when . 1 number of fantastic garments were found in a disused barrack-room . On inquiry these turned out to belong to a society evidently quite harmless to all intents and purposes , but , nevertheless , against the rules , so it was , of course , put down , and the enterprising originator of the society received a very stiff letter on the subject from the commanding officer . —Court Journal .

Under the title of " Cottage Gardening , " Messrs . Cassell and Company are about to publish a new halfpenny weekl y journal dealing with gardening and kindred subjects . It is specially intended to help the occupiers of small gardens , poultry , and bee-keepers , allotment-holders , and housewives . It will be edited by Mr . W . Robinson , F . L . Her Majesty ' s Commissioners for the Exhibition of 18 51 have placed at the disposal of the Council of University College the nomination to a scholarship of £ 150 for the jj year 1 S 93 . The scholarship is intended "to enable students !! who have passed through a college curriculum to continue j the prosecution of science with the view of aiding in its 1 advance or in its application to the industries of the I country . At the Mansion House the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress entertained numerous guests on _ Thursday on behalf of the British and Foreign Bible Society . Appropriate addresses were delivered during the course of the evening , and an interesting selection of Bible versions from the Society ' s library were on view . Music , tea , and coffee , added to the enjoyment of the guests , who departed thoroughly satisfied that the association on whose behalf they were assembled was well worthy of continued support .

Lord Tennyson passed away tranquilly and without pain about half-past one on Thursday morning . Only the moonbeams lighted the dying poet ' s chamber , where the Hon . Hallam and Mrs . Tennyson , Sir Andrew Clark , and Dr . Dabbs were watching , when a peaceful slumber merged

almost imperceptibly into death . Lady Tennyson , to whom her husband had spoken his last farewell about midnight , was absent from the room at the close . Messages of of sympathy have been received from the Queen and the Prince of Wales .

The Court of Common Council , at their sitting on Thursday , were informed of the death of the Poet Laureate , by Mr .
