By what Bro . Piggott had done that night he had given evidence that he intended to take firm grip of the lodge , and carry out its traditions . The W . M ., in reply , said that instead of making a long speech it would be better to leave to the opinion of the

brethren the way he had earned out his work when that n'ork had been done . If they could remind him of that at the end of his year of office , and receive him in the same kind way , he should be perfectly happy . The W . M ., in proposing "The I . P . M . and Installing Master , " said he wanted least of all that the lodge should be considered a scratch-back party , but it would almost seem so when he said that he had now to say sweet things

things of Bro . Mussared . Many of the brethren had seen him work during his year of office , and they knew he did not flatter Bro . Mussared when he informed the brethren that he had been most earnest and anxious , and that he had also had the reward which should come to great study . Nobody who had seen his work could go away from the lodge and say that the lodge had not a Master who was worthy of it . Being a practical man more than a speech

maker he would put his principle in practice immediately by pinning on the breast of the I . P . M . a jewel which the brethren had voted to him . Although men of exceptional ability had passed that chair there was not a man who more deserved well of the lodge . Bro . C . Mussared , I . P . M ., in reply , said he was pleased to think the brethren considered that he had earned the jewel . That they did so was ample reward to him . He

left the chair with regret , but if he left it with the brethren ' s ood wishes he was satisfied . He hoped he should be spared for many years to be able to do more for the Chough Lodge than he had already done . When he thought of the time of the consecration of the lodge and of the present time and saw how wonderfully the lodge had prospered he could not but rejoice , and he hoped that prosperity would continue . They must not be blinded by the success thev

had had , but must take care that everything , the small details of ritual , & c , were attended to . He asked the brethren to accept his most earnest thanks for their kindness to him during the year , and hoped that kindness would be continued to his very worthy successor . Each of the Initiates responded to the toast of "The Initiates , " and Bro . Hatch replied to that of "The

Visitors , " referring to the excellent work done by the new W . M . on his first night in performing the ceremony of initiation . He added that every visitor and every brother of the lodge must have enjoyed both the working and the banquet . Bro . Edwards , the first W . M . of the lodge , acknowledged the toast of " The Past Masters , " and Bro . Pylc , P . M ., that ul " The Charities . "

bro . Walter B . Marcus , P . M ., Treas ., in his portion of the replies to the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " said his sole interest was concentrated in the Chough Lodge , and if the Masters of the lodge would only consult him as Masters in the past had consulted him with respect o the expenditure , he trusted they would always continue to have a splendid balance which they showed on the present occasion . He knew something of the finance of societies ,

having been Treasurer of the Chough Musical Society for many years , and being a business man he endeavoured to teep on the right side . Unfortunately , a few years back tney were on the wrong side , but owing to the splendid management of Past Master Judge they pulled the thing round and showed their finances on the right side . He bUould continue to endeavour to keep them so . He then informed the brethren that the handsomely printed book of the

words of songs sung that evening which contained likenesses of the Worshipful Master , Past Master ' s , . M ., having announced his intention of serving as Steward at the Festival next year of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , lodge was closed , and the brethren dined together under the presidency of their chief , who was very heartily congratulated on his appointment to the office of P . G . S . of W . on the preceding 'Tuesday .

been opened , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was then taken for Bro . Max Hummel as a joining member , which proved unanimous , and he was afterwards raised to the Third Degree , and after the transaction of other Masonic business , the lodge was closed .

HARROGATE . Harrogate and Claro Lodge ( No . 1001 ) . —A regular meeting was held on Friday , the 30 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Avenue-road , when there were present Bros . R . H . Walters , W . The minutes of the last regular meeting were read and conlirmed , and several letters and telegrams were received for unavoidable absence . Bro . F . D . Gass was raised to the Degree of F . C by the W . M . The ceremony was

impressively rendered , and the explanation of the tracing boards were excellently delivered by Bros . A . B . Booty , Sec , and Thompson , P . M ., Treas . There being no further business , " Hearty good wishes " were expressed , and the lodge was closed . The brethren then adjourned to the banqueting room , and partook of supper , the rest of the evening being spent in social harmony and duly honouring the loyal and Masonic toasts .

ILFORD . Langthorne Lodge ( No . 1421 ) . —The usual meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the 29 th ult ., at the Angel Hotel . Among these present were Bros . H . Allard , W . The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting having been read and conlirmed , Bros . J . Poston and H . W . Harrison were raised to the Sublime Degree of M . M . in a most able and impressive manner by the W . M .,

who is to be sincerely congratulated upon the admirable way the ceremony was performed . The lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned into a most cosy and comfortable banqueting room , where a splendid supper was served by Bro . Reynolds , who deserves every praise . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given by the W . M . with commendable brevity , which were duly

honoured . During the evening some excellent playing and singing was rendered by Bros . Shimeld , Evans , M . Taylor , Doyle , Matthews , Turnpenny , and others , After "The W . M ., " "The Past Masters , " and "The Ofliccrs '" toasts had been responded to , a very pleasant evening ' s entertainment was brought to a close by singing "God Save the Oueen , " "Auld Lang Syne , " and " Rule Britannia . "

PAIGNTON . Torbay Lodge ( No . 1358 ) . —This lodge held its annual meeting on the 27 th ult ., when the S . W ., Bro . C . Emmett was duly installed as W . M . for the ensuing year . M ., a vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Jones for the admirable manner in which he performed the installation ceremony , and the same was ordered to be entered upon the minutes . The lodge having been closed , the brethren shortly

afterwards sat down to an excellent banquet , provided by Bro . R . McAuslin . The chair was taken by the W . M ., and the vice-chair by Bro . Dr . Knight . At the conclusion of the banquet , the usual toasts followed . "The Oueen and Craft , " "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince ~ of Wales , " " The M . W . Pro G . M ., the Earl of

Lathom ; the R . W . Deputy G . M ., the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and "The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , the Earl of Euston ; the W . Deputy P . G . M ., Bro . Butler Wilkins ; and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were given from the chair , and received with the usual honours .

The latter toast was acknowledged by Bro . F . B . Whitford , who spoke highly of the manner in which Bro . the Earl of Euston carried out the duties of his office , and of the interest he took in Masonry in general . "The Worshipful Master" was then given by Bro . Kingcombe , who spoke of his knowledge of Bro . Heslop , and of the good work he had done in the lodge , and said

he felt sure he would worthily fill the office to which he had been elected . The toast was duly honoured . Bro . Heslop thanked the brethren for the manner . in which the toast had been received , and in the course of his observations said he hoped he should carry on the work of the lodge in a manner which would not only rellcct credit

upon himself , but also on the lodge . It would be his endeavour to uphold the dignity of the office in every possible way , and to follow the excellent example * set him by his predecessors . Bro . Dr . Knight proposed "The Past Masters , " and in doing so said he thought they owed them a great debt of gratitude for all they had done to forward Masonry in the lodge , and also in the province .

Bro . Kingcombe , in the absence of Bro . G . Osborn , replied to the toast . "The Installing Master" was given by Bro . VV . Simmonds , who spoke in high terms of praise of the manner in which Bro . Jones had performed the ceremony of that day . Bro . Jones suitably replied to the compliment paid him , and said it had given him great pleasure to assist in

installing Bro . Heslop as W . M . "The Masonic Charities" was submitted by Bro . H . Bulford , and " The Wardens and Officers " by Bro . Jones , and acknowledged by Bro . Dr . Knight . Harmony subsequently prevailed , and a very pleasant evening was spent .

UXBRWGE . Rpyal Union Lodge ( No . 3 82 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held at the Chequers Hotel , on Monday , the iyth ultimo , when there were present Bros . J . A . Carter , W . M ., in the chair ; J . Taplin , P . M ., acting S . W . ; H . J . Bragg , J . W . ; W . H . Reed , S . D . ; Foyer , J . D . ; Twamley , I . G . ; A . J . Fleming , as I , P . M . ; E . Cotton , P . Newman were unanimously elected , and they were duly initiated into the mysteries and priviliges of the Craft , the ceremony being most impressively performed by the W . M ., Bro . J . A . Carter . The next business on the agenda was a notice of motion given by the W . M ., to the effect that a sum of 20 guineas be voted from the funds for the purpose of Masonic Charily , and it was unanimously resolved that

that amount should be given as follows : 10 guineas to the Aged Freemasons , and 10 guineas to the Widows'Fund . The Secretary drew the attention of the lodge that its votes for the next election for the Girls' and Boys' Schools were at their disposal that evening , and suggested that they

should all be handed to Bro . J . Taplin , whu was the representative of the lodge on the Provincial Charity Association , which was passed unanimously . This being the whole of business , the lodge was closed . 'I'he brethren then sat down to dinner , which was served in Bio . T ' waniley ' s usual capital style .

Although men of exceptional ability had passed that chair there was not a man who more deserved well of the lodge . Bro . C . Mussared , I . P . M ., in reply , said he was pleased to think the brethren considered that he had earned the jewel . That they did so was ample reward to him . He

left the chair with regret , but if he left it with the brethren ' s ood wishes he was satisfied . He hoped he should be spared for many years to be able to do more for the Chough Lodge than he had already done . When he thought of the time of the consecration of the lodge and of the present time and saw how wonderfully the lodge had prospered he could not but rejoice , and he hoped that prosperity would continue . They must not be blinded by the success thev

had had , but must take care that everything , the small details of ritual , & c , were attended to . He asked the brethren to accept his most earnest thanks for their kindness to him during the year , and hoped that kindness would be continued to his very worthy successor . Each of the Initiates responded to the toast of "The Initiates , " and Bro . Hatch replied to that of "The

Visitors , " referring to the excellent work done by the new W . M . on his first night in performing the ceremony of initiation . He added that every visitor and every brother of the lodge must have enjoyed both the working and the banquet . Bro . Edwards , the first W . M . of the lodge , acknowledged the toast of " The Past Masters , " and Bro . Pylc , P . M ., that ul " The Charities . "

bro . Walter B . Marcus , P . M ., Treas ., in his portion of the replies to the toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " said his sole interest was concentrated in the Chough Lodge , and if the Masters of the lodge would only consult him as Masters in the past had consulted him with respect o the expenditure , he trusted they would always continue to have a splendid balance which they showed on the present occasion . He knew something of the finance of societies ,

having been Treasurer of the Chough Musical Society for many years , and being a business man he endeavoured to teep on the right side . Unfortunately , a few years back tney were on the wrong side , but owing to the splendid management of Past Master Judge they pulled the thing round and showed their finances on the right side . He bUould continue to endeavour to keep them so . He then informed the brethren that the handsomely printed book of the

words of songs sung that evening which contained likenesses of the Worshipful Master , Past Master ' s , . who is to be sincerely congratulated upon the admirable way the ceremony was performed . The lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned into a most cosy and comfortable banqueting room , where a splendid supper was served by Bro . Reynolds , who deserves every praise . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given by the W . M . with commendable brevity , which were duly

honoured . During the evening some excellent playing and singing was rendered by Bros . Shimeld , Evans , M . Taylor , Doyle , Matthews , Turnpenny , and others , After "The W . M ., " "The Past Masters , " and "The Ofliccrs '" toasts had been responded to , a very pleasant evening ' s entertainment was brought to a close by singing "God Save the Oueen , " "Auld Lang Syne , " and " Rule Britannia . afterwards sat down to an excellent banquet , provided by Bro . R . McAuslin . The chair was taken by the W . M ., and the vice-chair by Bro . Dr . Knight . At the conclusion of the banquet , the usual toasts followed . "The Oueen and Craft , " "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince ~ of Wales , " " The M . W . Pro G . M ., the Earl of

Lathom ; the R . W . Deputy G . M ., the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and "The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , the Earl of Euston ; the W . Deputy P . G . M ., Bro . Butler Wilkins ; and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " were given from the chair , and received with the usual honours .

The latter toast was acknowledged by Bro . F . B . Whitford , who spoke highly of the manner in which Bro . the Earl of Euston carried out the duties of his office , and of the interest he took in Masonry in general . "The Worshipful Master" was then given by Bro . Kingcombe , who spoke of his knowledge of Bro . Heslop , and of the good work he had done in the lodge , and said

he felt sure he would worthily fill the office to which he had been elected . The toast was duly honoured . Bro . Heslop thanked the brethren for the manner . in which the toast had been received , and in the course of his observations said he hoped he should carry on the work of the lodge in a manner which would not only rellcct credit

upon himself , but also on the lodge . It would be his endeavour to uphold the dignity of the office in every possible way , and to follow the excellent example * set him by his predecessors . Bro . Dr . Knight proposed "The Past Masters , " and in doing so said he thought they owed them a great debt of gratitude for all they had done to forward Masonry in the lodge , and also in the province .

Bro . Kingcombe , in the absence of Bro . G . Osborn , replied to the toast . "The Installing Master" was given by Bro . VV . Simmonds , who spoke in high terms of praise of the manner in which Bro . Jones had performed the ceremony of that day . Bro . Jones suitably replied to the compliment paid him , and said it had given him great pleasure to assist in

installing Bro . Heslop as W . M . "The Masonic Charities" was submitted by Bro . H . Bulford , and " The Wardens and Officers " by Bro . Jones , and acknowledged by Bro . Dr . Knight . Harmony subsequently prevailed , and a very pleasant evening was spent .

The next business on the agenda was a notice of motion given by the W . M ., to the effect that a sum of 20 guineas be voted from the funds for the purpose of Masonic Charily , and it was unanimously resolved that

that amount should be given as follows : 10 guineas to the Aged Freemasons , and 10 guineas to the Widows'Fund . The Secretary drew the attention of the lodge that its votes for the next election for the Girls' and Boys' Schools were at their disposal that evening , and suggested that they

should all be handed to Bro . J . Taplin , whu was the representative of the lodge on the Provincial Charity Association , which was passed unanimously . This being the whole of business , the lodge was closed . 'I'he brethren then sat down to dinner , which was served in Bio . T ' waniley ' s usual capital style .
