M ., Bro . Warhurst , who , he was afraid , was not

likely to be ever again amongst them , and who if he had been well would have performed the present duty . In regard to the W . M ., Bro . Kellie had been a valuable member of the lodge since its formation , and the brethren might be certain that he would fulfil the responsible duties of his ofiice with great efficiency . Bro . Kellie , in response , said with the assistance of the

officers and members he had every confidence that the ensuing year would be in every way successful . The Past Master's jewel , which he held in his hand , should that evening have been presented to Bro . Warhurst , their esteemed I . P . M ., but , unfortunately , as they knew , that could not be done . At Bro . Warhurst ' s request , he presented the jewel to his proxy , Bro . Bargery .

The W . M . next proposer ! "The Healths of the I . P . M . and the Installing Master ( Bro . Britten ) , " and the latter , with Bro . Bargeiy , appropriately responded . Amongst the other toasts were "The Past Masters , " " The Masonic Charities , " and " The Visiting Brethren j " and in the course of the evening the Treasurer , Bro .

Croxton , was presented with a handsome silver te i service , in recognition of his indefatigable zeal and energy in filling his important office during the last four years . The musical programme was contributed by Bros . H . J . Nicholls , Williams , Griffiths , J . T . Pugmire , T . C . Fargher , and the Standard quartette , and was under the direction of Bro . G . Eyton .

Warre j and the W . M ., on behalf of the brethren , tendered him their sincere thanks for the thoughtful present . Other business having been transacted , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , when they sat down to an elegant banquet , served up in admirable style by Bro . Mutton , who fairly excelled himself in his excellent

catering . The W . M ., Bro . Right Hon . W . T . Marriott , Q . C , M . P ., P . G . S ., presided , and gave the customary loyal toasts , which were duly honoured . Bro . Gerard Ford , Deputy P . G . M ., then rose and begged the indulgence of the brethren for making an alteration in the order of the toast list . Their W . M . was anxious to leave to catch an early train , in order that he might be

enabled to start in the morning for tigyptj and Bro . Lord A , Gordon Lennox , the newly-elected Prov . S . G . W ., was also compelled to leave Brighton by the same train . He ( Bro . Ford ) would therefore embrace the oppoitunity of coupling two toasts , and asking those present to drink "The Health of the W . M . and the Prov . S . G . W . " 'Their W . M ., he said , though soon to be absent from them , would ,

in spirit , be with them . He then alluded in graceful terms to the long association of the Duke of Richmond's family with the Sussex Province . Bro . Sir W . T . Marriott , in responding , said the Deputy Prov . G . M . had "let the cat out ot the bag . " He amusingly remarked that owing to decay and general break up he had been ordered abroad , and knew that he

had the sympathy of every brother present . He trusted to be back in a month's time , fully prepared to carry out his duties in Ihe lodge . Bro . Lord A . Gordon Lennox , in acknowledging the toast , said he would endeavour to faithfully carry out the duties of his new office . His family , as Bro . Ford had remarked , had been connected with Sussex Freemasons for many years , and he trusted the association would long

continue . After the two distinguished brethren had taken their leave , Bro . Gerard Ford occupied the chair , and proposed "The Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " Bro . Col . Shadwell Clerke , Grand Secretary , responded . The officers of Grand Lodge ( he wished to omit himself ) Were Masons of acknowledged ability , who merited their

high positions , and the Sussex Piovince possessed two notable examples in their Deputy Provincial Grand Master 3-nd their Provincial Grand Secretary . Bro . E . Letchworth proposed " The R . W . Prov . Grand Master of Sussex , H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught . " The toast , he said , always received a hearty response from the brethren of the province . in promoting the interests of the Craft as District G . M . of Bombay and Grand Superintendent of that district . Bro . Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Sec , proposed "The Deputy P . ov . G . M ., Bro . Gerard Ford , P . G . D ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past . " Though unavoidably absent from England , the Duke of Cohnaught , he said , placed the fullest trust in his Prov .

Grand Officers , and he ( Bro . Clerke ) had excellent opportunities of witnessing the admirable manner in which they carried out their duties . Better Prov . Grand Officers did not , he thought , exist in England . The Deputy Prov . G . Master , Bro . Gerard Ford , was highly esteemed by all , and he trusted his health would continue to improve that he might be able to carry out his duties for many years .

Though absent from the last lodge meeting , Bro . Ford had taken the liveliest interest in all that took place , and he believed the hearty sympathy which the brethren had extended to him had done much towards his restoration to health . Bro . Gerard Ford , who was warmly applauded on rising to respond , thanked the brethren for their kind reception

of the toast . As Bro . Clerke had said , his severe illness had been much relieved by the marked kindness of the brethren , and he was grateful for their cordial sympathy . He received admirable support from the Provincial Grand Officers , and so long as they continued their efforts the province would be prosperous . He also tendered his thanks to Bro . Shadwell Clerke for the great interest he had at all

times taken in the Province of Sussex . Bro . Gerard Ford then proposed "The Visitors . " Specially amongst those he mentioned the officers of the Royal Clarence Lodge—the mother lodge of the province . In 1 S 6 9 he himself joined the lodge , and in 1 S 76 he was its W . M . Many good and worthy Masons of that lodge had passed away , amongst whom he mentioned Bros . Sir

to the First Degree , the VV . M ., Bro . W . Smith , VV . M . 22 S , in . troduced the Lecturer in appropriate terms , and Bro . Stevens having assumed the chair commenced his lecture . Prefacing his remarks by a few words as to the Ancient ritual and those rituals in existence in 1813 , he led his hearers on to the Union of the Grand Lodges in the latter year , when the present rit aal was agreed upon . Passing onward , he marked out the various discrepancies and innovations in the present ritual as compared with the oldest

manuscript he had been able to hnd . He reminded the brethren lhat , although small and apparently insignificant in themselves , these various differences as a whole marked the beautiful ceremonies of the Craft , and that his sole desire was to try to induce a reversion to the old order of things . For a period of nearly two hours the Lecturer held his hearers as if by a spell , and it was only when he had concluded his remarks relative to the First Degree that notice was taken of the rapid lapse of time . The lodge

having been called off and on , Bro . Stevens postponed the further portions of his lecture to a future occasion , and a hearty and unanimous vote of thanks having been accorded to him , he acknowledged the same in terms highly appreciated by the brethren , and promised to again visit the lodge at no distant lime . Several joining members having been elected , and Bro . Stevens having the lod

been unanimously elected an honorary member , ge was closed . The Hon . Secretary will be pleased to receive the name of any brother willing to give any lecture relative to the Craft , and the brethren will at all times give a hearty welcome to all , as it is the desire of the members of this lodge to go beyond the mere working of ceremonies and sections .
