THE OFFICIAL CALENDAR .

" The Freemasons' Calendar and Pocket Book " for the year 18 95 was ready last month , and thus early as usual . If the Provincial authorities ' generally follosved the lead of the Grand Lodge in the issue of their Directories , it would be a great boon to the Provincial brethren who need these handy guides from January to December in each

year . It is not easy to discover any points in svhich the Grand Lodge Calendar can be improved , for , as respects the text , it is practically exhaustive , most accurate and ably arranged , the typographical excellence being also very satisfactory , through the press of Bro . George Kenning . It appears to me that every W . M . and Secretary of

the English Constitution should be duly provided with a copy of this ever-welcome and most useful Annual , and also all who desire the latest information as to the position of the English Craft . The details are ample , interesting , and instructive svithal , and if brethren would familiarize themselves with a fesv of the numerous facts to be found in its pages , their speeches would be better worth listening to , after the"grave business " is over .

The succession of Grand Masters , Acting G . Ms ., and D . G . Ms , from 1717 to 1894 , and the complete Roll of all Grand Ofiicers from 1813 , are excellent compilations to begin svith , followed by the list of Present Grand Ofiicers , & c , and a full account of Remarkable Occurences ( general and financial ) conclude the preliminary matter ; after svhich the List of

Lodges and Chapters are given , and another list notes all removed from the Roll since the last numeration of 1863 . There are 2107 Lodges on the Roll ; 411 London , 1251 Country , and 445 Colonial ( including the three Military Lodges ) , being a net increase of twentyone since the last issue . There are . " . 01 Lodges noteel as possessing Centenary Jesvel Warrants .

There are 799 R . A . Chapters ; 16 9 London , 50 c Country , and 130 Colonial ; 19 of these Chapters having Centenary J ewel Warrants . It is but fair to acknosvledge that the figures as to the totals are nosv printed svith the Calendar for the first time , and has saved me no little time in going carefully through the several pages to make up the particulars .

The succession of Provincial and District Grand Masters from 1725 , and those of the Grand Superintendents from late last century , afford much valuable information to the Craft , locally or Provincially , which cannot fail to interest very many brethren svho desire reliable data , and the arrangement besides of each Province and District in alphabetical order , and

recording the names of each Prov . G . M ., Dep . Prov . G . M ., and Prov . G . Sec . ( svith the address of the latter ) , and all the Lodges alphabetically arranged under each Province or District , and so also with the Prov . and Dist . Grand Chapters , svhich must have involved considerable labour , leaves nothing as to these to be desired , and is a very handy compilation .

There are several other attractive features , but the foregoing must suffice for the present . The sale is on behalf of the " Charity Fund , " and the cost per copy is 2 / - nett . officiated at the organ , svhile Mr . Anderson conducted the choir and orchestra—the latter comprising a number of stringed instruments played by Masons . The brethren were in full Masonic dress , and the scene svas alike impressive and animated . Special psalms , hymns , and prayers svere duly set out in a pretty booklet presented as a souvenir of the service by Bro . T .

Piper . The Old and New Testament lessons svere read by Bro . Macrae , and a special sermon appropriate to the occasion svas given by Bro . Aitken from the words : "The city lieth four-square ; the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal " ( Revelations xxi 16 ) . We regret we have not the space at present to give

even a summary of the eloquent sermon preached by Bro . Aitkin , but hope to do so in some future issue . It svas listened to svith marked attention and interest . The solos and recitatives of the special music svere sung by Bro . E . Pownall ( bass ) , Mr . Spencer ( tenor ) , Miss Henderson Aitkin ( soprano ) , and Miss Ssvinford

( contralto ) . The offertory amounted to over £ 26 , part of svhich sum svill be devoted to one of the Masonic Charities . Before the service , the voluntaries— " Benedictus " ( Mackenzie ) , and an original svork by Bro . Ssvinford , svere played , and after the seivice the " Overture to ' Occasional Oratorio' " ( Handel ) .

Bro . F . Harvey , the Installing Master , proposed "The Health of the W . M . He said he had particular pleasure in proposing this toast , as liro . Morton svas the second candidate initiated in St . George's Lodge , and the first of their own children to reach the proud position of Master of that lodge . Having , therefore , initiated , passed , and raised him , they would understand the pride he felt in being privileged to instal him as Master that night , and he

felt sure , from the able manner in svhich the new Master invested his ofiicers , they would agree that they had a Master svho svould justify their selection , and a son of the lodge of svhom they could all feel proud . The toast svas received svith musical honours . Bro . Nelson Prosver , P . M ., gave the toast of "The Installing Officer " in very kindly terms , svhich svas brielly

replied to . •' The I . P . M . " svas given by theW . M ., and suitably replied to . ' The Visitors , " prooosed by Bro . F . V . Harvey , svas responded to by the VV . M . of No . 2277 , svho thanked the brethren of the lodge for the hearty reception they had met svith .

Bro . Prosver , P . M . 1745 , also replied , and in the course of a most able and interesting speech , remarked upon the true Masonic hospitality he had alivavs received in Cyprus . Although he svas a Founder and Hon . Member of St . George ' s , this was the first time he had had the pleasure of attending a regular meeting , and after the excellent svorking he had seen , he regretted it svas the first . He svas afraid to say hosv many Installation Meetings he had been present at , but certainly quite thirty , and he had never seen

the ceremony given better than on that occasion , and he congratulated the members of St . George ' s upon having ollicers svho could so thoroughly do the svork . The toast of "The Officers" and the Tyler ' s toast brought a commendable short toast list to an end . The evening ' s proceedings svere ercatly enlivened by songs from Bros . Meyer , Cannon , Harvey and Turner , a very effective duet by Bros . Cannons and lilattner , and some most humorous verses from Bro . Gargick .
