THE EMPRESS EucENiEconcIudedhervisitto the Queen and left Windsor Castle for the Metropolis on Thursday .
Princess Henry of Battenberg accompanied the Empress to the Great Western Station , and Major-General Sir John McNeill and Lady Biddulph svere in attendance . THE NATIONAL THRIFT SOCIETY having completed a vigorous campaign in the Midland Counties , has nosv commenced a series of benefit meetings in London and
surrounding districts . Bros . William Darley and T . Bossden Gieen are the principal speakers of this society , which is doing valuable svork in promoting thrift among the industrial classes and young people . As the work of this institution has greatl y increased of late , the committee are very desirous of obtaining increased support for the movement .
ROYAL CALEDONIAN ASYLUM . —A subscriber has presented to the Institution a number of old Scottish curios . These , the directors think , svould form the necleus of a collection svhich might ultimately prove of great interest . They are of -opinion that the Caledonian Asylum is a most fitting home for such a collection , and they , therefore , respectfully invite contributions of articles from all who
may feel disposed to aid them in their attempt to found a Museum of Scottish antiquities . Communications should be addressed to the Secretaries , who will be glad to receive gifts of articles . A GREAT many Masons seem to think a lodge is not progressing unless it has nesv svork continually on hand . This is a mistaken idea , and one too prevalent , says
Tidings from the Craft . The lodge must work , it is true , because our Masonry teaches us to work , but in evety lodge there is old material to be worked on , some one to be svorked over , and consequently there is no necessity for the Craft to remain idle . Where are the inactive and indifferent Masons ? They are in your lodge . They need working on —and some of them need svorking over .
ROS ' AL COLLEGE OF MUSIC . —The annual opera by the pupils of the Royal College of Music under the direction of Professor Stanford , is to take place at the Prince of VVales' Theatre , on the afternoon of the 13 th inst . The svork selected for the occasion is Delibes' " Le Rji l ' a dir , " hitherto never produced in this country , notwithstanding its
extraordinary popularity at Paris and Dresden . The opera has been for some time in preparation , and there is every reason to anticipate the usual good performance- . Mr . Richard Temple is the stage-manager , and for the theatre the college is indebted to the kindness of the management of the Prince of Wales ' .
THE PRINCE OF WALES , accompanied by the Duke of York , arrived in London on Thursday from St . Petersburg . Their Royal Highnesses embarked at Calais on board the Calais-Douvres shortly after 9 a . m ., and were due to leave Dover for Charing Cross at 10 . 25 . Owing , however , to the prevalence of fog in the Channel , the passage could not be made so expeditiously as usual , and the Koyal train did
not depart for London until 10 . 47 . At the Admiralty Pier , where the Royal party svere received by Mr . M . D . Tyrwhitt , deputy manager , and Mr . Buckmaster , superintendent , of the South-Eastern Railway Company , there was a considerable concourse of spectators , but , by the svish of the Prince of Wales , the arrangements for his reception , both at Dover and at the London terminus , were of a nature to ensure comparative privacy .
MR . THEODORE PLOWITZ S CONCERT . —An attractive entertainment was given in Steinsvay Hall , on Tuesday evening , by Mr . Theodore Plowitz , svho , together svith Mr . Tivadar Nachez , supplied the instrumental music , This included Grieg ' s Sonata in C minor for pianoforte and violin , capitally rendered j Liszt ' s Tsselfth Rhapsody , a Caprice from Mr . Plowitz ' s own pen and several of the
most popular violin solos in Mr . Nachez ' s extensive repertory . For those who preferred songs to instrumental svorks , ample provision was made j Madame Paula Plowitz , Miss Paula Edenfeld , Miss Agness Jansen , and Mr . Ben Davies assisting . Miss Jansen introduced anew declamatory song , " A Norsvay Champion , " by Grieg , for the first | time , and was much applauded , as svere her associates in the
doings of a pleasant and interesting evening . UNFURLING A NEW BANNER . —On the 5 th inst . an interesting ceremony took place at Consett in connection with the Constance Lodge , No . 2135 , svhen a very choicely designed and beautifully painted banner svas unfurled by the Provincial Grand Secretary of Durham , Bro . Robert Hudson , P . G . S . B . of Eng ., who officiated at the request
of the W . M ., Bro . George T . Hyden , svho presided upon the occasion . There was a numerous attendance of Past and Present Provincial Grand Officers , as svell as officers and brethren of the lodge . The lodge svas duly opened by the W . M ., Bro . G . T . Hyden , who briefly stated that the lodge having decided to obtain a new banner , it was thought well that it should be unfurled in a manner that
svould do honour and add lustre to the lodge . A special prayer was then offered bv Bro . the Rev . E . W . Drage , P . G . C . Bro . R . Hudson , P . G . Sec , was then called upon to unfurl the banner , and in doing so he remarked that they would all feel that svas no common occasion , and he trusted the ceremony would long live in the memory of the Masons of Consett . After referring to the . uses and
emblems of banners in all ages , he hoped as a standard that the banner now unfurled would be looked upon with pleasure , and that they would rally round it , and in so doing they would remember that it should at all times point them to that svhich was noble and true . Bro . the Rev . F . L Cope , P . P . G . C , in an eloquent address ,
described the banner , which depicted the giving of the lasv on Mount Sinai , and the speaker referred to the high regard in which they always held the sacred volume of the Word and the principles of the Order . The W . M ., Bro . G . T . Hyden , thanked all who had taken part , and the lodge was afterwards closed by Bro . G . Christopher , P . M ., P . G . S . B . The brethren afterwards sat down to refreshment , the W . M ., Bro . G . T . Hyden , in the chair .

UNDER SHERIFF BEARD is still confined to his room , and but slight improvement is noticeable in his condition . Through the City Press the Under Sheriff wishes to thank those svho have so kindly inquired after him .

ON THE INVITATION of Bro . Horace B . Marshall , jun ., M . A ., the members of the St . Bride's Youths' Institute svill be entertained at tea this ( Saturday ) evening . Archdeacon Sinclair has promised to preside at the social gathering to be held subsequently .
BRO . ALDERMAN SIR J AMES WHITEHEAD , Bart ., has been unanimously appointed to represent the Mansion House Association ( acting on behalf of the traders and agriculturists of the United Kingdom ) at the Conference on Light Railways initiated by the Board of Trade .
HER HIGHNESS PRINCESS EDWARD of Saxe-Weimei has consented to open the annual sale and exhibiton of svork made by the members of "The Children's Salon , "on the 20 th inst ., at Westminster Tosvn Hall , svith a view to completing the endosvment of a children ' s cot in the North West London Hospital .

Z ., & c , author of "The Noble Soul , " "The Submerged City , " "Toujours Perdrix " ( poems ) , " A Novel Vengeance , " and " The Four Henries" ( prose ) , recites his original productions at musical entertainments , smoking concerts , & c . IN THE REPORT of the installation meeting of the Whittington Lodge , | No . 862 , in our issue of the 24 th ult , sve described it as the anniversary of the initiation of Bro . James Weaver , whereas it should have been his Mastership , he having occupied the chair 25 years ago . Bro . Weaver is more of a veteran than sve thought him—he svas initiated in 1 S 63 , the year in svhich Bro . Wavell ' s father occupied the chair .
"M IRETTE" reached its final performance at the Savoy Theatre t on Thursday evening , the departure of this graceful opera being attended by an audience that assuredly numbered in its ranks many svho said faresvell to a most tuneful and musicianly score svith sincere regret . It is no use crying over spilt milk ,- therefore let us content ourselves with an express ™ of the belief that had
" Mirette " been produced originally with the strengthened libretto and cast that was given to the piece when it svas already tarred svith the brush of comparative failure , the fortunes of Mr . Messager ' s delightful opera might have been far happier . As it is , those amateurs who have ears for true charm and refinement in light music will not fail to bear the vanished piece in pleasant and graceful remembrance .
ON THURSDAY evening , the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York left tosvn on a vi sit to the Queen . Their Royal Highnesses arrived at W indsor shortly before six o'clock , and were received by Major-General Sir John McNeill , Equerry to her Majesty . The Prince of VVales and the Duke of York drove to the Castle and dined svith the Qucen , _ svhose party also included the Italian Ambassador and Countess Tornielli , Major-General Ellis , and the
Duke of York's Equerry . One characteristic feature in connection with this visit is too interesting to be passed over without note . There were in Windsor Castle four generations of the British Royal Family in direct line—the Queen , the Prince of Wales , the Duke of York , and Prince Edward of York . That the reigning Sovereign should be surrounded by her son , her grandson , and her great grandson is an event probably unparralled in the annals of English history .
THE MISSES SALTER ' S RECITAL . —A vocal recital svas given in Queen's Hall , on Thursday Afternoon , by ihe Misses Florence and Bertha Salter—artists whom we cannot remember to have met before , but svhose singing whether in solo or duet , we are quite ready to hear again . Hie young ladies have obviously been well trained , and show not only sympathy with their work , but the intelligence
necessary to guide aright an expression of feeling . One being a high soprano and the other a losv contralto , they cover together a good deal of the field of vocal music . Their duet singing is noticeable , as might be expected , for its " unities j " svhile in solos , whether by such an old composer as Caldara , or the contemporary Chaminade , the qualities
already pointed out as theirs give a great deal of pleasure , and are entitled to an equal meed of praise . The vocalists svere assisted by Miss Christina Brumleu , a violinist of whom we had a first hearing on this occasion . She is a clever artist , ssith plenty of skill , and , happily , plenty ol time before her in which to acquire more .
THE FOURTH SEASON of the Thursday Subscription Concerts completed the first half of its course on Thursday in the Queen's ( Small ) Hall . There should have been a large audience , since the programme not only studied cultured taste by confining its first part to the works of Schumann , but had in its second part various selections of a more popular character . It is true , seemingly , that no
concert-giving man can serve two masters , or , to put the case in another way , that he cannot sit upon two stools without risk of coming to the ground . The works by Schumann included his pianoforte Trio in F ( Messrs . Webb , Peiniger , and Brousil ) , the "Stiicke un Volkston " ( Mi * - Brousil ) , and four songs which were equally divided between Mr . Franklin Clive and Mr . VV . Nicholl . As the capacity
of all these well-known artists is familiar , the merit ot their performance on the occasion will be taken for granted . With regard to the miscellaneous selection , mention should be made of Miss Ethel Bevans , a contralto of considerable range and posver , who distinguished herself in Goring Thomas ' s "Summer Night . " Bro . Clive ' s singing ol Gounod's " If thou art sleeping , maiden , " may also be set down as thoroughly artistic . Mr . Arthur b . Godfrey did good service as accompanist .
