RESIGNATIONS . To the Editor of thc "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother ,-As a Secretary of large experience , 1 should like to inform " Ex-Secretary " that if a brother resigns his membership the act is complete ; he must rejoin in the ordinary svay shoulel he desire to continue a member . This is the lasv as defined by our respected Grand Registrar . —Yours fraternally , HENRY LOVEGROVE .

ELECTION OF GRAND TREASURER . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , After the experience at the last election for Grand Treasurer , and svith the prospect in the ensuing year of another similar experience , svould it not be possible for Grand Lodge to alter the mode of election ?

The poll on the last occasion svas about 3 , , and to record this number of votes caused great inconvenience to the officials , and also an amount of discomfort to the brethren svho attended to record their voles , on account of the crosvded state of Grand Lodge . As a remedy , I svould suggest that voting papers be issued to all brethren entitled to vote in Grand Lodge , svith the

names of candidates for Grand Treasurer thereon , and that these voting papers be sent to the appointed officers by a date named , in the same manner as is done at the elections of the three Charitable Institutions . I can see no objection to this form of election , but , on the contrary , see three vcry good reasons for its adoption . Firstly , it svould prevent the overcrosvding

at Grand Lodge , and the necessity of a visit to London by those brethren svho simply attend on that occasion to record their vote . Secondly , it would put a stop to the canvassing for votes , svhich , I am informed , was very prevalent at the last election , as it is evident it svould be useless soliciting votes from London brethren only , svhen the selection svould be made by

the entire voting posver of the Craft . The ejualifications of each brother nominated as a candidate could be set out on the voting papers , and brethren svould be able to g ive tlieir votes according to the merits of the brethren seeking the honour . Thirdly , it svould enable the Masters , Wardens , and Past Masters of colonial lodges under the Grand Lodge of England to have a

vote in the election . I feel sure that this svould be appreciated b y the large number of brethren who , although entitled to a vote in Grand Lodge , yet , on account of the distance , never have the satisfaction of attending and exercising that privilege .

The ofiice of Grand Treasurer being an electis'e one , anything that svould tend to make the ofiice representative of the svhole Craft svould be desirable . Until the present , on the occasion ot an election , the selection has been made chielly by the London lodges and those of adjacent provinces . —Yours fraternally , COLONIAL PAST MASTER . THK COSMOPOLITAN MASONIC CALENDAR FOR 1 S 95 has just been issued by liro . George Kenning , the printer and publisher , svith commendable promptitude , and though the infoimation is so varied and extensive , the price is still the one shilling , as heretofore . This very handy companion is nosv in its 25 th year of publication—its silver wedding anniversary—and if only for that reason , should obtain very hearty support from the Craft ; but seeing it

contains a mass of information obtainable nowhere else , and is full of particulars of all regular Grand Masonic Bodies under the sun , excepting as to the Grand Lodge and Chapter of England ( about svhich the official Calendar should be consulted ) , it is a valuable mullum in pn . rvo , and indispensible to all brethren svho need reliable data as to the status of the universal Craft at Home and Abroad . There are some 200 pages of closely prinled matter , the

type , though necessarily small , being exceedingly clear and readable , and the numerous tables are clearly and ably arranged . It asks to be consulted , and deserve a svide circulation . "THE LINCOLN STAMP ALBUM . " This very useful svork is nosv in its 10 th edition , and continues to be a favourite svith beginners , as svell as patronized by older philatelists . It has spaces to hold 6000 stamps , the names

of the Countries are printed on every page most legibly ( in Geographical order ) and the binding is svell done , there being sufficient guards introduced , so as to allou * the stamps to be placed svithin , svithout making the Album bulge . The lO Coloured Maps , engraved bv the Queen ' s Geographer , exhibiting the mnst of the Stamp-issuing Countries and States of the World , are a positive boon , svhether for amateurs or professionals , and the excellent

Index , ssith other attractive features , render the Album a triumph , and make it quite a record at thc price . In the same artistic volume there is Lincoln's Postage Stamji Cntalogne , \\ ith 3 C 1 C" illustrations , prices forused and unused , and the dates of issue and colours of every stamp , also varieties of perforations and svatermarks . The reliable and interesting hints to collectors have been considerably increased in this edition , the numerous notes being simply

invaluable . The tsvo svorks in the one volume , Album and Catalogue , may be had for 5 s ., ( 3 s ., or . Ss ., according to binding , or the Catalogue and Maps alone for 3 s . ( Post free Od . extra ) . The establishment of Mr . W . S . Lincoln is at 2 Hcllts-st ., Oxford-st ., London , W ., thc address being very knosvingly arranged svithin tsvo s <| uares , the one

having hollies , and the other an ox crossing a ford ; a hieroglyphical study of an ingenious character . Bro . Lincoln has had several medals in recognition of his Albums , and has just been asvarded one at the Paris Exhibition of Books and Printing , nosv being held at the Palais de ( 'Industrie .

"THE WHIST TAIH . K . "—A Treasury of Notes on the Royal Game bv Cavendish anel other distinguished svriters . Edited by Portland . London John Hogg , 13 , Paternosterrow . —The literature of svhist is a voluminous one , but , sve eloubt , if anything has yet appeared of such a generally interesting and useful character in connection svi'h this noble and fascinating game . It not only deals svith the lasvs and practices of moilern svhist and the etieiuette of the table ,

but embodies almost all conceivable matters of interest in relation thereto . There are three excellent essays by Cavendish , than svhom there is no greater expositor of the intricacies ancl science of modern svhist . The other svriters svhose experience anel knosvledge have been garnered by the editor represent the accumulated svisdom of svhist devotees , and may be relied on as authorities . But it is not so much as a dry teacher of the game that the

editor of this volume poses , although that portion of his svork is excellent and up to date , but the peculiar features of this svork are that the book is as readable as a novel , and there is not a dry page out of the 472 . The editor has evidently gathered his matter from a complete storehouse of svhist literature , and has shown that he possesses the faculty

of presenting to his readers both svit and svisdom in that happy blend svhich marks the successful manipulator of other people ' s ideas and svork . The book is a seasonable one , and sve can offer no better advice to the svorld of svhist players than to give this volume a prominent place in their list of presents at Christmas .
