Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

to leave the lodge as prosperous as before , indeed , in better funds than it had been for a number of years . They had something in hand now , which was rather unusual , and they started really that night with a balance of £ 40 . The I . P . M . was a worthy man and a good Mason , lt was the custom of the lodge to award the I . P . M . a memento , and

he would now place upon the breast of Bro . Martin a jewel which was second to none that had yet been given by the Lodge of Joppa . He had also the pleasure of presenting him with a P . M . ' s collar and silver jewel which had been given by the officers . This was almost an innovation , but it was one which the I . P . M . merited .

Bro . Martin , in reply , said he looked upon the jewel with extraordinary pleasure from the fact that he felt certain he had won the confidence of the brethren for having performed his part to their satisfaction . It was said the labourer was worthy of his hire , but the labourer in ancient times had a penny a day . He should have considered himself well paid if he had received the ordinary five

guinea jewel . Although several members were not aware that it had not been customary in old days in this lodge to give a P . M . 's jewel , yet if a man was found to be worthy something was given . However , to-night he found he had not only the brethren ' s confidence , but they had thought fit to show their confidence by giving him a very valuable jewel . At the outset of his year he asked every member

of the lodge to pay attention to the chair . He did not ask them to respect him , but to respect the office of VV . M . For himself , he was but a humble individual , but he represented the lodge while in the chair . He could safely say that during the whole of his year of office order and decoium had prevailed in the lodge . Very many brethren had visited the lodge , and many of them were very

critical , but he had heard outside the lodge—no thanks to him , but the members—how very much the Lodge of Joppa had improved in its manners . The manners of the Lodge of Joppa had always been good , but he thought the brethren might take credit to themselves that they were all patterns of excellence . He hoped they would continue so . fn conclusion he thanked the brethren sincerely for the

P . M . ' s jewel and the officers for the collar , the latter of which had only been given two or three times . He was quite as proud of that as he was of the P . M . jewel . The officers were the junior partners of the VV . M . and if they fell out with the head of the lodge the lodge could not goon . Bros . L . Alexander , Hyman , and Myers responded to thetoastof "The P . M . 's . "

Bro . Valentine , W . M . Montefiore Lodge , in replying to the toast of " The Visitors , " said the fact of the Masters of the four other Jewish Lodges in the metropolis being invited to the Lodge of Joppa installation was an additional 1 proof , if additional proof were needed , of that strong I Masonic unity and friendship which existed among the five Jewish Lodges , and in returning his sincere thanks forthe

kind way in which the visitors had been received , he did so not least on his own behalf as one of the visitors , but as representing the Montefiore Lodge over which he had the honour to preside . In his own case there was a somewhat stronger tie than in the case of the others . He could not forget , nor could any member of his lodge forget , that the Joppa Lodge was the mother of the Slontefiore Lodge .

In its earlier days its first members were members of the Joppa , and the Secretary of the Joppa was the Secretary of the Montefiore . The first Master of the Montefiore was a member of the Joppa , and if any incentive was wanted to make the brethren of the Montefiore think kindly of the Lodge of Joppa , that incentive was always before them in the manner in which the Joppa Lodge maintained the prestige of the Craft . That had also been done in the

Montefiore , the members or which had always endeavoured to do their duty to the lodge from which they sprung . Bros . Norden , VV . M . Lodge of Israel , and Casper , VV . M . Samson Lodge , also replied , and the remaining toasts having been disposed of , the brethren separated . During the evening a very pleasing programme of music was beautifully performed under the direction of Bro . P . E . Van Noorden , Organist of the lodge .

Grover , and it proving to be unanimous , he was initiated into Craft mysteries . The bye-laws having been readthe

, election of W . M . resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . Plowman . Bro . VV . Mann , the senior P . M ., having resigned tbTO-iigh M-VieaMi the pos ' it ' ion of Treasurer , Bro . George Everett was unanimousl y elected in his place . Bro . Reinardt was re-elected Tyler , and Bros . S . Pope , Ayling , and Palmer , Auditors . Bro . Plowman , W . M . elect , having been

M . 37 6 , P . G . S . ; F . C . Atkinson , J . D . 376 ; and others . The installation ceremony was ably performed bv Bro . VV .

Clarke , assisted by Bro . Terry , who acted as D . C , Bro . B . Gall taking the Senior , and Bro . Thomas Grimwood the Junior Warden ' s chairs , respectively . The newly-installed Master invested his officers for the year as under : Bros . F Horsey , S . W . ; H . W . Page Phillips , J . W . ; G . Booth , S . D . ; J . Parrett , J . D . ; B . Gall , Treas . and D . C ; F ! VVhisstock , Sec ; Rev . R . C . M . RouseChap . ; J

, . Stidolph , Org . ; and A . S . Gross , l . G . The installation banquet was subsequently held at the Bull Inn , where between 30 and 40 brethren sat down to an elegant and admirably served repast . The VV . M . presided , and , in addition to the brethren already mentioned , there were present Bros . E . C . Moor , J . Collins , J . Grout , J . C Fisk , R . Allen , and others .

The toasts of "The Queen and the Craft , " "The CM ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and the other Members ofthe Royal Famil y , " and "The Pro G . M ., and Present and Past Grand Officers " were proposed from the chair , Bro . VV . Clarke responding for the Grand Officers . The Chairman next proposed " The R . VV . Prov . G . M ., Lord Waveney , the Deputy Prov . G . M ., the Rev . C . J . Martyn , and the Present and Past Prov . Grand Officers "

, to which Bro . N . Tracy , P . G . S ., responded . Bro . Major-General VV . H . Hessey , I . P . M ., proposed " The Health of the VV . M ., " and expressed his indebtedness to Bro . E . Smith for having kindly consented to forego the claims he had to his present position during the the two years he ( Major-Gen . Hessey ) had occupied the Master ' s chair . That large gathering was sufficient testimony of Bro . Smith ' s popularity amongst the brethren .

and he was sure from what they had already seen they might look to their present VV . M . to raise the working of the lodge to a higher degree of excellence than it had hitherto reached . During the past year many brethren had through the influence of Bro . Smith been initiated or admitted as joining members of the lodge—they had now

about 50 members on the books—and he hoped the time was not far distant when the Doric would be one of the strongest lodges in the province . In conclusion , Major-General Hessey expressed his regret that the Deputy Prov . G . M . was unable to be with them , because he said it was his particular wish to be present to do honour to Bro . Smith .

The toast was drunk with full Masonic honours . The VVorshipful Master , in a few well-chosen words , responded . He thanked the brethren and the Past Masters for the great kindness they had shown to him , and expressed the hope that the officers of the lodge would , during the coming year , afford him every assistance in their power in carrying on the work of the lodge . _ . Br VY p T . Phillips proposed "The Masonic

Chanties , ' and alluding to the fact that he shonld have the honour of representing the province at the Girls' Festival , expressed the hope that he would be well supported . liro . Terry , who , on rising to respond , was received with loud applause , said the Benevolent Institution this year required more than usual support , because it had overdrawn its banking account by some £ 1500 during the past year . The number of candidates was largely in excess of

the vacancies , and unless great help were accorded to the Institution , it would be impossible for the Committee to find room for an additional number , or even fill up the vacancies which already existed . At the present time there were 130 candidates , while there were only 14 vacancies . Having alluded to the fact that Bro . Tracy and Bro . H . I Wright were going to represent the province at the Benevolent Institution , and Bro . VV . P . T . Philli at the Girls '

ps I'estival , Bro . Terry referred to the success which had attended the scheme for the insurance of the life of Bro . the Rev . C J . Ma .-t yn , which would secure for the province a large number of votes in perpetuity . The Chairman proposed " The Visitors , " to which Bro . C . G . Hayward and others responded . Bro . Major-General Hessey proposed "The Health of the Installing Master , " and alluded to the fact that Bro .

VV . Clarke had kindly undertaken and ably discharged the duties for thc past eight years . Bro . VV . Clarke responded . The Chairman then proposed "The I . P . M . and thc Officers of the Lodge . " Bro . Major-General Hessey and the ofiicers reponded . Ihe Senior Warden

proposed "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and having expressed his regretat the absence , through illness , of Bro . Whisstock , said the lodge was especially indebted to Bro . Gall lor the way in which he had undertaken the duties of his present ollice . Bro . Gall responded , and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the Tyler ' s toast .

Terry referred to the success which had attended the scheme for the insurance of the life of Bro . the Rev . C J .
