It will naturally comm- 'nd itself to the lovers of the Masonic Craft , so manv members of the "Mystic Tie" being enrolled amongst the noble nf the earth who have laid down their lives for the sake of promoting scientific knowledge , or to discover missing explorers , and all the more , because it is written by Bra . Master ' s jewel , a gift which was acknowledged in graceful terms by Iiro . Lazarus ; and then occurred an event which may take rank with exceptional transactions in Masonic lodges . Bro . Bahr , one of four initiates during Bro . Lazarus ' s year of office , in the name of himself a > d his brother initiates , presented Bro . H . Lazarus with a handsome gold watch and chain , the watch
bearing the lollowing inscription : " Presented by Brothers Bahr , Allmann , Whyl , and Kusterholz , as a mark of esteem to Brother Henry Lazarus , W . M . Lodge of Joppa , iSS . 1891 . " I he brethren afterwards closed the lodge , and adjourned

When he was one of the other ollieers he
certainly satisfied every one . The Worshipful Master , in reply , saitl he should do his best to fill the chair properly , and he was very pleased to see four candidates for initiation that evening , as it was an earnest that he would have some work dm ing his year . He hoped there would be more initi . tes to follow them . Iiro . Lewis Lazarus . P . M ., Secretary , responded to the
toast of " The Joppa Lodge Benevolent Fund , " of which he gave the history , stating that it was statted by the late Bro . fluctuated , and there was now nearly £ Soo to the good . It had given as much as £ 295 in one year . It had done much good , and had placed many brethren on their legs again after they had met with misfortune . He appealed to the brethren for further assistance to the fund , and he announced a good list of subscriptions . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of " The I . P . M ., " said the presentation of the Past Master's jewel by
the lod ^ e , and the watch and chain by the four initiates , was a sufficient testimony , if any was required , of the appreciation of the brethren of the way in which the Immediate Past Master had perfotmed tte duties of the chair . Bro . Henry Lazarus , ' I . P . M ., in reply , said that evening had been one of the most eventful of his life . He had seen an enormous number of friends around him , and he had
teceived a handsome jewel of a Past Master , besides a separate valuable testimonial from the brethren who were initiated during hisyearof office . While he held the position of W . M . of this Joppa Lodge , he would not siy he did his duty , but he tried to give sati-faction buth in the lodge and at the banquet table . He trusted he should have the pleasure of being associated with the members of that lodge for many years to come .
Each of the Initiates responded individually to the toast of " The Initiates . " Bros . Dancyger , Asher I . Myers , M . D . Loewenstark , Reed , and Massey replied to the toast of "The Visitors ;" the Past Masters , headed by Bro . Israel Abrahams , responded to the toast of "Tie Past Masters ; " the S . W .
and S . D . acknowledged the toasts of " The Principal Officers" and "The Subordinate Officers ; " and the Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings . The oldest member of the lodge—Bro . Ralph Solomonswas present both in the lodge and at the banquet table , as hearty and vigorous as in the days of his youth .

Hughes for a more critical examination into the suitability of intended candidates by subjecting them to the test of a select Committee before proposition in open lodge was
rejected by a small majority , presumably on the grounds of its being in antagonism to the Book of Constitutions . The petitions of a distressed old brother to the Board of Benevolence and the K . fluctuated , and there was now nearly £ Soo to the good .
