Bro . L . Jones responded to "The Health of the Newlyinitiated " in the following words : Worshipful Master and brethren , —Never , perhaps , in my previous career , have I felt myself so unfitted to express adequately thc sense of my feelings and obligations . Through your kindness I have this afternoon been privileged to become a member of one of the largest , one of the noblest , most influential ,

and most ancient Institutions on the face of the civilised world . For years the ambition has matured with increasing strength , and the final step to what I believe was a laudable aspiration has been taken , somewhat late in life , as the result of a dutiful and honourable conviction . Though as yet 1 have scarcely been permitted to peer through the fringe of the veil which hides your sanctities from the rude

gazes of the curious world—if I may be allowed to judge of the sacred principles of those hallowed mysteries—by the character of the solemn and impressive ceremonials of my intialion , there is nothing , there can be nothing , but what , in its highest and most ennobling form , is calculated to make me more humane , more large-hearted , than I have hitherto been . I take it that the duties , obligations , and

spirit of true Masonry imply the most sacred kinship between the Creator and our fellow man—realising this , he must of necessity acquire the attributes which lit him to become a more generous brother , a more loyal and useful citizen , and a brighter Christian . Worshipiul sir , I thank you for the tco kind words in which you have been pleased to speak of my personal worth , and I only trust It may be

my privilege to be able , after long service , to echo the sentiments which—after thirty long years of loyal dutyyou have so nobly expressed in connection with the Institution which to-night has honoured you to your present dignity . And to you , brethren , I have to express my heartfelt thanks for the kind way you have received my name . I hope the future may prove me not quite unworthy of your confidence .

The floral decorations and supply of dessert had been entrusted to Mr . W . Johnson , and the grapes , pines , & c ,

hc provided were of the choicest kinds , being much appreciated by the brethren for their uniform fine quality . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and the evening was one of most pleasurable enjoyment , and Bro . Clarke was heartily congratulated on his appointment to the high office of Master of this lodge .

O ., responded , and expressed the pleasure he felt , as father of the lodge , in seeing how it had flourished . He was proud of his Masonic family . He had not missed one of the installation meetings , and was proud to see so large a gathering present . He heartily

wished the W . M . a successful year of office . Bro . W . H . Gibson , P . M ., proposed "The R . W . H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Prov . Grand Master . " 1 he Duke , he said , had endeared himself to the hearts of Sussex Freemasons , and all hoped to see him amongst them again at an early date . He had also been heartily welcomed by the Freemasons in India . Though the Prov .

Grand Master was absent from Sussex , he was gratified to see the Dep . Prov . Grand Master honoured the lodge that evening with his presence . Bro . C . J . Heald , I . P . M ., proposed "The R . W . Bro . Gerard Ford , Deputy Prov . Grand Master of Sussex , and Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " He eulogised Bro . Gerard Ford , whom he heartily welcomed

amongst them , and worthily designated him " a pattern Deputy Provincial Grand Master . " Bro . Gerard Ford , on rising to respond , was received with enthusiasm . He referred , in an able speech , to the continuous interest H . R . H . the Dukeof Connaught took in the Province of Sussex ; to the excellent support which he himself had received from the Provincial Grand Officers .

and to the gratification he felt at the kind manner in which he had been welcomed by the brethren of the various lodges he had been able to visit . He had been highly pleased with the work he had witnessed in the St . Cecilia Lodge that afternoon . It had been pertormed admirably , and he had been much impressed by the harmony , cohesion , and gentlemanly tone which characterised the brethren . He

sincerely wished continued prosperity to the lodge under its newly-installed W . M . Bro . C . J . Heald , I . P . M ., proposed "The VV . M . of the Lodge . " He had , he said , known Bro . Edwards for many years , and had seen his able work in the various offices he had filled in the lodge . His excellent work that afternoon foreshadowed a successful year , and he trusted that liro .

Edwards , in visiting the other lodges in the county , would experience the pleasure he himself had felt in attending their meetings . Bro . Edwards ross to respond amidst hearty and prolonged applause . He said he felt deeply the honour which the lodge had conferred upon him—a comparatively young Freemason . He referred to the pleasant gatherings they had had ia conjunction with the brethren of the Royal

Brunswick Lodge , and to the excellent working of the recently established St . Cecilia Lodge of Instruction . He would , he said , work assiduously to maintain the prestige of the lodge and to contribute to its success . He then proposed " The Masonic Charities , " to which Bro . Binckes responded ; and " The P . M . 's of the Lodge , " which was acknowledged by Bro . C J . Heald , I . P . M . Bro . G . Cole , P . M ., and ordered to be entered on the minutes , for his conduct in the chair and the able manner in which he had worked the sections . The VV . M . in returning thanks , expressed his gratification , and remar ' kedthat it was only by the instruction and assistance of Bros . Martin P . M ., and Milbourne , P . M ., his present Wardens , that he had been enabled to gain such a knowledge of the Craft as to acquit himself

in the manner he had done , which that vote of thanks proved was to the satisfaction of the brethren ; but he could not sit down without proposing a hearty vote of thanks to those Wardens , and also the other brethren who had given him assistance in working the sections .
