COMPS . George Dunsterville , U . 11 . Rae , and C . F . Dunsterville were installed M . E . '/ .., II ., and J . respectively of the Chapter of Sincerity , No . 1 S 9 , East Stonehouse , at its annual meeting in the Town Hall on Monday , the 2 Sth ultimo .

ON WEDNESDAY , the Duchess of Connaught distributed the certificates gained in a nursing class held under the auspices of the Surrey County Council ' s Technical Education Scheme , at Bagshot , the vote of thanks , which was passed by acclamation to her Royal Highness , baing gracefully acknowledged by the Duke of Connaught .

TIIK SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL in aid of the funds of the Master Tailors' lienevolent Association was held at the Hotel Metropole on Wednesday evening , when subscriptions were announced , amounting to £ 105 ( 1 . The report showed that the association had expended during the past year £ 1170 , while ils income was only £ 872 .

THE THIRD annual ball by the lodges at Newport , Monmouthshire , was held at the Westgate Hotel , on Friday evening , the 25 th ult . The banqueting hall , in which the dancing took place , was very tastefully decorated with Masonic emblems , banners , & c , & c . ; the music was excellent , and the arrangements generally gave the utmost satisfaction .

NEW NORTH LONDON PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY . —The fourth annual ball in aid of the funds of the above Society will take place on Monday , March 4 th , at the Goswell Hall , Goswell-road , E . C . THE ANNUAL BALL AND CONCERT in aid of the City Police Convalescent Home will , be held at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Monday , the 11 th instant . The institution is one which requires , as it richly deserves , to be generou . ly supported , and we trust that the forthcoming entertainment in its behalf will be attended with satisfactory results .

THE INSTALLATION MEETING of the Dukeof Connaught Lodge , No . 1831 , was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Landport , pn Tuesday , the 29 th ult ., when Bro . William Baker was installed W . M . by his immediate predecessor in the chair , Bro . A . Howell , to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded for the able and impressive manner in which he performed his duty . After the customary banquet , the usual toasts were honoured , that of the new W . M . being very enthusiastically received .

At the annual banquet of the Ebrington Lod je No . 18 47 , Stonehouse , Bro . J . Mitchell , VV . M ., who occupied the chair , presented his immediate predeces . or , Bro . C . J . F . Williams , in the nam J of the lodge wi ; h a handsome gold watch , on the back of which was inscribed the following

legend : " Presented to W . Bro . C . J . F . Williams , by the brethren of Lodt ; e Ebrington , No . 1 S 47 , in appreciation of services rendered to the lodge during his term of ollice as W . Master for the year 1 S 94 . January 3 jnd , 1 X 95 . " The gilt was gracefully acknowledged in a brief speech by Bro . Williams .

THE ZETLAND LODCJE , No . 1005 , Gloucester , gave its annual ball at the Bell Hotel , on Thursday , the 24 th ult . The rooms were very tastefully decorated , and a full programme of dances was successfully carried out to the strains of the City Band , which had been augmented for the

occasion . The supper , which was served in the Masonic Room , reflected great credit on Miss Grinstead , the manageress of the hotel , while the general arrangements were carried out by a Committee of the lodge , which included among Its members the VV . M ., Bro , S . Mallard , and the Honorary Secretary , Bro . John Jennings .

THE PRINCE OV WALES had a busy day on Wednesday . In the afternoon his Royal Highness attended a meeting of the Council of the Royal Agricultural Sjciety at 13 , Hanover-square , at which there were present , among others , Prince Christian , the Dukes of Richmond and Cordon , Sutherland , and Westminster , and Bros , the Kail of Jersey , Sir Alassey Lopes , and Sir M . White Rid ey .

Bart ., M . P . Later in the day he attended a meeting of the Royal Commission on the Aged Poor , and in the evening was present at the second smoking concert of the Royal Amateur Orchestral Society at the Queen ' s Hall , there being also present the Duke of York , Prince Christian and his son , Prince Christian Victor of Schleswig-Holstein , and Bro . the Earl of Lathom .

The reports received from all part ^ i of the country show that the weather which ha * prevailed during the present week has been of exceptional seventy . At Birmingham , on Wednesday evening , several tested therm ) meters pointed to a temperature of only two degrees above zero or 30 degrees of frost . Over 20 degrees of trost were registered at Poole on Tuesday night , and over 16 degrees in Bournemouth . Throughout Cheshire and North Wales

20 degrees of frost , and at Driflield , Yorkshire , 30 degrees were registered on Wednesday , while at Bury St . Edmunds there have been 39 degrees of frost , so low a temperature not having been recorded since iSfio . In Chatham and Rochester snow is lying two feet deep , while from all parts of Scotland we hear of snow drifts with trains blocked on the lines of railways . From Lincolnshire we hear of 2 S and 30 degrees .

AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY , on Thursaav , the Rev . William Moore Ede , M . A ., of St . John ' s College , and of Gateshead-on-Tyne , was elected to the office of Hulsean Lecturer for the ensuing year . THE TOTAL amount realised by the sale of the Prince of Wales ' s shire horses was X ' 5492 ios ., an average of

"

BRO . HENRY IKYING delivered a lecture to a crowded audience at the Royal Institution on Friday , the 1 st inst ., on "Acting : an Art . " In this , he inquired into the nature and office fit art * with the object of establishing that Acting had an undoubted claim to be classed amongst the Fine Arts , with painting , sculpture , poetry , and music . THE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT of the Roya 1

Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold ils regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday next , the 13 th inst ., at four p . m . At this meeting the number of vacancies to be competed for at the election in May next will be declared , and the list of candidates settled . THE ANNUAL assembly of St . Ninian Lodge , Nairn , was

held in the Public Hall , Nairn , on Fiiday , the 25 th ult ., there being about 90 couples present . The hall was most tastefully decorated , the music was excellent , and dancing was kept up with great spirit till an early hour the following morning . The arrangements were most successfully carried out by a Committee of the lodge , with Bro . Gordon Tocher as its Hon . Secretary .

AT THE COUNCIL held by her Majesty the Queen , at Osborne , on Saturday , the 2 nd inst .. and which was attended by the Prime Minister , the Lord President , Bro . Lord Carrington , Lord Chamberlain , and Bro . Lord Kensington , . Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard , Bro . Cecil Rhodes , the Premier of Cape Colony , was sworn in a member of the Privy Council . Our Right Hon . brother afterwards travelled to Southampton , where he joined Dr . Jamieson on board the Athenian , and sailed for the Cape .

THE COUNTESS OI- ' WARWICK gave a grand fancy dress ball at Warwick Castle on Friday , the ist inst . The gues ' . s were requested to appear in costumes of the peiiod of Louis XV . and Louis XVI ., and the rooms of the Castle were decorated in harmony with the time represented under the personal direction of the Countess , assisted by Mr . Caryl-Craven . The Cedar Room was reserved for

dancing , for which the White Viennese Band played . The other state rooms were used for retiring , and supper was laid for 400 guests in the Great Hall . THE INSTALLATION MEETING of the Dukeof Connaught Lodge , No . 1831 , was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Landport , pn Tuesday , the 29 th ult ., when Bro . William Baker was installed W . M . by his immediate predecessor in the chair , Bro . A . Howell , to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded for the able and impressive manner in which he performed his duty . After the customary banquet , the usual toasts were honoured , that of the new W . M . being very enthusiastically received .

THE ZETLAND LODCJE , No . 1005 , Gloucester , gave its annual ball at the Bell Hotel , on Thursday , the 24 th ult . The rooms were very tastefully decorated , and a full programme of dances was successfully carried out to the strains of the City Band , which had been augmented for the

occasion . The supper , which was served in the Masonic Room , reflected great credit on Miss Grinstead , the manageress of the hotel , while the general arrangements were carried out by a Committee of the lodge , which included among Its members the VV . M ., Bro , S . Mallard , and the Honorary Secretary , Bro . John Jennings .

THE PRINCE OV WALES had a busy day on Wednesday . In the afternoon his Royal Highness attended a meeting of the Council of the Royal Agricultural Sjciety at 13 , Hanover-square , at which there were present , among others , Prince Christian , the Dukes of Richmond and Cordon , Sutherland , and Westminster , and Bros , the Kail of Jersey , Sir Alassey Lopes , and Sir M . White Rid ey .
