AT THE MEETING on the 2 Sth ult . of the Middlesex County Council a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . R . D . M . Littler , K . C , C . B ., for his services as Chairman for the last three years . BRO . SHERIFF LAWRENCE will preside at the Hotel Cecil on Saturday , April 27 th , at the annual dinner in aid of the pension and benevolent funds of the London Association of Correctors of the Press .

IN THE absence of Bro . the Lord Mayor , Bro . Sheriff Lawrence distributed the awards at the Crystal Palace on the 2 nd instant , at the close of the football contest for the Sheriff of London ' s Shield , the gift of Bro . Ex-Sheriff Dewar , M . P . THE PROSPERITY LODGE OF INSTRUCTION SUPPER , postponed in consequence of the lamented death of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria , will take place on Wednesday next , the 13 th instant ,, at the Manchester Hotel , Aldersgate-street , E . C ., at 7 p . m . sharp .

MEN OF KENT . —Arrangements have been made for the postponed Cinderella dance of the Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men , to be held at the Bridge Ho : el , on Saturday , the 23 rd instant . The Association continues to make progress , its member ship now totalling 556 .

ST . BARTHOLOMEW THE GREAT . —The Saturday afternoon lectures on the history and architecture of this old monastic church will be continued on Saturdays , the 23 rd and 30 th instant , at half-past two . Afterwards the whole building , including the Triforia , Lady Chapel , and crypt , will be thrown open free of charge . IN HIS WILL the late Earl of Donoughmore directs that the gold box presented to Richard Lord Donoughmore with the freedom of the Guild of Merchants of the City of London , and the sword presented with the freedom of the City to Lord Hutchinson by the Corporation of the City of London shall be included among the family heirlooms .

THE CONSECRATION of the new Masonic temple at Kilsyth , which has been erected at a cost of . £ 900 by the St . John ' s Lodge , No . 39 , took place on the 2 nd inst ., the ceremony being performed by the Dep . Prov . G . Master of Dumbartonshire , Bro . Robt . M'Farlane , who congratulated the brethren on the handsome structure they had erected . Deputations were present from Nos . o Kilwinning , 3 Bis Glasgow , 27 , 28 , ~ , 2 , 76 , 103 , 147 , and others .

His MAJESTY THE KING , who has resigned office as Grand Prior of the Order of the Hospital of St . John of Jerusalem in England on his accession to the Throne , became ex-olTicio Sovereign Head and Patron under the terms of the Royal Cnart-sr of Incorporation , on the death of her late lamented Majesty Queen Victoria . His Koyal Highness the Duke of Cornwall and York , sub-Prior , has been elected by the Chapter-General Grand Prior of the Order , in succession to'his Majesty .

LIFEBOAT SATURDAY FUND . —The Lady Presidents had decided to organise a bazaar on a large scale to be held during the week after Ascot , but having regard to the period of Court mourning , which will largely affect the coming season , they have now resolved to postpone the bazaar until next year . An evening fete has , however , been anarged at Stafford House , the use of which has been kindly granted by the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland . The fete will be held on Wednesday evening , | une 20 th . Lady Londonderry will act as president of the organising committee , and Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox as honorary secretary .

A COINCIDENCE . —At the supper following the regular meeting of the Filzwilliam Lodge , No . 2533 , held on Monday last , at the Masonic Hall , Boroughbury , Peterborough , the W . M . announced ( hat the Stewards were desirous of placing wine on the table to celebrate the birth of their first boms , both of them having been presented with a son within a week of each other , and since the last regular meeting in February . Th e brethren , on the proposition of the W . M ., Bro . Frank Caster , P . M . 442 , P . P . A . G . D . of C , drank heartily to the health of the two little " Lewises , " an I the toast was suitably acknowledged by the proud parents , Bros . A . J , Paten and W . H . Sturton , Stewards .

A SHAKESPEARE "RECORD" AND A RARE MILTON AUTOGRAPH . —An unprecedented price , £ 620 , was paid on Saturday , at Messrs . Sotheby ' s , for a remarkably fine copy , with several leaves uncut , of Shakespeare ' s " The Most Lamentable Tragedie of Titus Andronicus , as it hath sundry times been plaide b / the Kind ' s Majestie's Servants" ( second known ed . J , 1611 . On the back of the title is a MS . list of the Dramatis Persona ; . We do not remember even a first folio of Shakespeare having realised a much larger sum . Mr . Stevens , the purchaser , became also possessor , for £ 100 , of another fine copy of Shakespeare , the 1619 ed . of " The Late

and Much-Admired Play called Pericles , Prince of Tyre , etc . " Milton's Genevan , black-letter Bible ( C . Barker , 158 s ) , containing his signature—a hitherto unknown Sth or 9 th . autograph , to add to those chronicled by Prof . Misson—with those of Elizabeta Minshull , his third wife , and of several members of the Minshull and Mingam families , starting with £ 103 , was sold to Mr . Stevens far , ( , 225 . A Kelmscott Press royal folia

( 1 S 96 ) of Chaucer ' s Works , edited by F . S . Ellis , ornamented with pictures designed by Sir E . Burne- Jones , uncut , realised £ So , another £ 75 , whilst £ 22 ios . was paid . for W . Morris ' s " Earthly Paradise , " uf the same press , 8 vols ., woodcut borders and initial letters , vellum . A first edition of Beiumont and Fletcher ' s " Pnylaster , or Love Lyes a Bleeding , " 1 G 20 , brought £ 4 6 ios . The total of six days' sale amounted to £ 7160 .

PEARL LIFE ASSURANCE C OMPANV , LIMITED . —The annual general meeting was held at the Company's Offices , London Bridge . E . C , on Friday , the 15 th ult ., when the Directors had the satisfaction of rendering an excellent account of their work during the past year . The total income amounted to £ SS 2 , 62 j iji . CJ . more by 4 , 1 iS , i 6 o is . 5 J . than in the preceding year , while the Premium income on the Policies in f orci , inclu ding 871 , 5 62 new Policies issued during the year , reached £ 95 2 15 s . 1 id . The amount paid on Lite Claims and Matured Endowments , with Bonuses , was £ 304 , 370 12 s . 5 d .,

making the total thus oaid since the establishment of the Compiny , £ 2 , 747 , 192 its . 8 d . The Accumulated Funds , consisting of the Assurance Funds and paid up Capital , amount t ) £ 1 , 200 , 086 2 s . 6 d ., showing an increase for t e year of £ 201 , 973 17 s . 3 d . These figures tell their own tale , but a comparison of the Premium Income and Assets at the close of the last two quinquennial periods show still more clearly how great has been the progress made by Ihe company . At the close of iS 95 the Premium Income was £ 422 , 894 and the Assets

£ 510 , 978 , while at the close of 1900 the former stood at £ 341 , 743 and the latter at £ 1 , 200 , 286 . Thus in the interval between those years the Premium Income has nearly doubled itself , and the Assets are more than doubled . Again , in the Ordinary Branch the Premium Income for 1900 was £ 100 , 780 , or £ 21 , 093 in excess of the same Income in iSyg , the Premiums on the new Policies issued being £ 33 , 6 43 iCs ., the amount assuied reaching £ 880 , 060 . According to the Quinquennial Valuation to last December

there was a surplus of £ 203 , 588 , of which , on the recommendation of the Directors , £ 30 , 993 was distributed among the Participating Policy-holders and Shareholders , and the balance of £ 172 , 595 was carried forward , in conclusion the Directors recommended that a dividend of 10 percent , be paid forthwith , and at the same time expressed their hearty thanks to the Company ' s Staff for the care and attention with which they had performed their duties and devoted themselves to the Company ' s interests .

THE STATIONERS' COMPANY . —Bro . Alderman Truscott has been elected the upper warden . BRO . SHERIFF LAWRENCE has been returned unopposed as a member of the Surrey County Council . AN INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION—the fourth of its kind—will be held in Venice this year , from April 22 nd to October 31 st . BRO . T . HASTINGS MILLER , the Chief Commoner , and his family are leaving London at the end of the month for the Riviera for a short holiday .

WE UNDERSTAND that the Churchman , which has been edited by Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair for some years , will pass into new editorial hands with the April number . H . R . H . THE DUKE OF CORNWALL AND YORK honoured Messrs . W . and D . Downey with a visit to their studios , and was photographed in the uniform of an Admiral . KING _ En WARD . —Probable Visit to Berlin . —King Edward , it is understjod , intends visiting Homburg , to take the waters , in May . He will then pay a visit to Darmstadt , and will most probably go to Berlin also . '

THE BRITISH ( R . A . ) CHAPTER , NO . S . —At the installation meeting of this chapter Bro . Frank Richardson , at the request of the First Principal , exalted Bro . Sheriff Lawrence into Royal Arch Masonry . SMALLER GRANTS TO CURATES . —The Committee of the Additional Curates Society have with great regret decided to make a general reduction in the society ' s grants , in view of the serious diminution during 1 S 99 and 1900 in the contributions received , which were in those two years £ 3900 below the usual stan lard . '

FEW PEOPLE know of the useful public work of Bro . Edward Terry , the popular comedian . At Barnes he is interested in most of the local bodies , from the Bnrd of Guardians to charity committees . He is on the council of the Foundling and Charing Cross Hospitals , he is a member of the Strand Board of Works , and Past Grand Treasurer .

THE CITY ' GIFT TO THE VICTORIAN MEMORIAL . —At the meeting of the City of London Corporation on Thursday , Bro . T . Hastings Miller moved that the sum of 5000 guineas be contributed by annual instalments of 1000 guineas for five years to the Queen Victoria Memorial bund . Bro . Sir Whitaker Ellis seconded the motion , which was at once agreed to .

THE LONDON SKETCH CLUB . —The private view of the sixth exhibition of sketches by the members of the London Sketch Club will be held tomorrow ( Saturday ) , at the Modern Gallery , 175 , Bond-street , W ., and the exhibition will be open to the public from the nth to the 23 rd instant inclusive . There being many new members a greater variety of work will be shown .

BRO . THE LORD MAYOR will preside at a meeting to be held at the Mansion House , on Thursday , the 26 th inst ., at 3 p . m ., in connection with the forthcoming Naval and Military Exhibition at the Crystal Palace , which is designed to commemorate the Jubilee of the opening of the Great ' 51 Exhibition in Hyde Park . In connection with th « approaching Exhibition many means have been devised for adding to the funds of tie various Naval and Military Charities .

THE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their regular meeting for the month on Wednesday , the 13 th instant , w'len the Secretary will report the result of the recent Festival and a vote of thanks will b : proposed to the _ Earl of Warwick , Dip . G . Master , Prov . G . Master of Essex , for his kin < nessin presiding on the occasion as Chairman , and the Board of Stewards for t ' e valuable aid they rendered in raising so large a total of Donations and Subscriptions .

SYMPATHY will be expressed in the City for Bro . Alderman Sir John Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., who has sustained a family bereavement in the death of his brother , Mr . Frederick Startbridge Ellis . Mr . Ellis was for many years one of the leading dealers and experts in old books . He was an intimate friend of William Morris , Dante G . Rossetti , and Burne Jones , and for the two former he acted as publisher . Mr . E'lis edited about a dozen of the publications of the Kelmsford Press . He had attained his 71 st year .

PURITY OR WHISKY . —Messrs . Persse and Co ., a well-known firmof distillers of Irish whisky , who have been making a speciality of introducing pure Irish whisky of net less than seven years old , in bottles sealed in their distillery , to the English market , have applied to the Irish Master of the Rolls for an injunction to prevent certain retailers hom selling other whisky in their bottles . 1 'he Master of the Rolls said it was plain a very common fraud had been committed , and he granted a perpetual injunction , defendants to pay costs .

A MOST successful and enjoyable concert was held at 1 , Hanover-park , Peckham , on Thursday , the 2 Sth ult ., under the chairmanship of Bro . A . E . Mullins , P . M . 14 V ) , and P . Z . 720 , ably supported in the vice-chair by Bro . J . H . Cooper , I . P . M . 1475 , the Directors of the Camberwell and Dulwich Pension Society , and an excellent company . The artists were of the highest order , provided by the worthy chairman . A collection was made on behalf of the funds of the Camberwell and Dulwich Penshn Society , which proved very satisfactory , inasmuch as the club was made a Life Governor of that Institution .

MASONIC PRESENTATION . —An interesting ceremony took place at the monthly meeting of the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 35 S , Derbyshire . Bro . C . F . Chamberlin , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., who has been a member of the lodge for nearly 20 years , and has been Secretary for 12 years , being the recipient of a large and handsomely-framed portrait of himself in full regalia , subscribed for by the brethren . The presentation was made by Bro . J . C . Webb , P . M ., and suitably acknowledged by Bro . Chamberlin , who afterwards handed the portrait to the W . M ., on behalf of tbe I idge , si that it may han % on the walls of the lodge room "for all time . "

THE HON . ALBERT EDWARD J HENNIKER-MAJOR , eldest son of Bro . Lord Henniker , Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man , who died in London , on Saturday morning , of double pneumonia , was born in 1865 . He had been private secretary to two Governors of South Australia , and assistant secretary to a former First Lord of the Admiralty . Mr . Henniker-Major formerly held a commission in the 3 rd ( Militia ) Battalion Norfolk Regiment . In consequence of the death of the son of the

Lieutenant-Governor , the sittings of both branches of the Manx Legislature have been postponed . Bro . Lord Henniker , who has four other sons , is descended on the distaff side from Sir John Major , who went round the world with Commodore Anson . The first Baron Henniker married Sir John ^ daughter and co-heir , and adopted the name of Henniker-Major . Bro . Lord Henniker is a popular East Anglian , and until his appointment as Governor of the Isle of Man he was Chairman of the East Suffolk County Council .

MAPLE AND COMPANY , LIMITED . —The nth annual general meeting of the shareholders was held at the Company ' s premises in Tottenham Court-road , on Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., when the Board ot Directors , of whom Bro . Sir J . Blundell Maple , Bart ., M . P ., is the President , delivered their report for the past year . From this it appears that though the gross Departmental returns were not quite equal to those of 1899 , the re-arrangement that has taken place in the administration of the business has allowed the Directors to propose a dividend of equal amount . The balance of Profit

available at the close of the year reached the sum of £ 154 , 550 18 s . 3 d ., of which , according to the Articles of Association , £ 54 , 147 is added to the Reserve Fund , which accordingly now stands at £ 260 , 535 . Of the 4 , , 403 iSs . 2 d ., there has been paid in respect of interim dividend £ 35 , 937 , and the Directors recommended that of the balance remaining £ 64 , 125 should be devoted to the payment to the shareholders of a further dividend of nine per cent ., and £ 341 Ss . 3 d . carried forward . This makes th '

total dividend for the year 14 per cent . The Directors further announce that the Articles of Association have besn altered in such a way that the Committee of the Stock Exchange have sanctioned the quotation on the Official List of the Preference ana Ordinary Shares of the Company . As to the future , the Directors express the opinio " that the accession of the King and Queen will have a beneficial effect on trade generally ) and are hopeful that Maple and Company , L'mited , will share in the benefits resulting therefrom .

J , 1611 . On the back of the title is a MS . list of the Dramatis Persona ; . We do not remember even a first folio of Shakespeare having realised a much larger sum . Mr . Stevens , the purchaser , became also possessor , for £ 100 , of another fine copy of Shakespeare , the 1619 ed . of " The Late

and Much-Admired Play called Pericles , Prince of Tyre , etc . " Milton's Genevan , black-letter Bible ( C . Barker , 158 s ) , containing his signature—a hitherto unknown Sth or 9 th . autograph , to add to those chronicled by Prof . Misson—with those of Elizabeta Minshull , his third wife , and of several members of the Minshull and Mingam families , starting with £ 103 , was sold to Mr . Stevens far , ( , 225 . ( 1 S 96 ) of Chaucer ' s Works , edited by F . S . Ellis , ornamented with pictures designed by Sir E . Burne- Jones , uncut , realised £ So , another £ 75 , whilst £ 22 ios . was paid . for W . Morris ' s " Earthly Paradise , " uf the same press , 8 vols ., woodcut borders and initial letters , vellum . A first edition of Beiumont and Fletcher ' s " Pnylaster , or Love Lyes a Bleeding , " 1 G 20 , brought £ 4 6 ios . The total of six days' sale amounted to £ 7160 .

These figures tell their own tale , but a comparison of the Premium Income and Assets at the close of the last two quinquennial periods show still more clearly how great has been the progress made by Ihe company . At the close of iS 95 the Premium Income was £ 422 , 894 and the Assets

£ 510 , 978 , while at the close of 1900 the former stood at £ 341 , 743 and the latter at £ 1 , 200 , 286 . Thus in the interval between those years the Premium Income has nearly doubled itself , and the Assets are more than doubled . FEW PEOPLE know of the useful public work of Bro . Edward Terry , the popular comedian . At Barnes he is interested in most of the local bodies , from the Bnrd of Guardians to charity committees . He is on the council of the Foundling and Charing Cross Hospitals , he is a member of the Strand Board of Works , and Past Grand Treasurer .

THE CITY ' GIFT TO THE VICTORIAN MEMORIAL . —At the meeting of the City of London Corporation on Thursday , Bro . T . Hastings Miller moved that the sum of 5000 guineas be contributed by annual instalments of 1000 guineas for five years to the Queen Victoria Memorial bund . Bro . Sir Whitaker Ellis seconded the motion , which was at once agreed to .

THE LONDON SKETCH CLUB . —The private view of the sixth exhibition of sketches by the members of the London Sketch Club will be held tomorrow ( Saturday ) , at the Modern Gallery , 175 , Bond-street , W ., and the exhibition will be open to the public from the nth to the 23 rd instant inclusive . There being many new members a greater variety of work will be shown .

THE LORD MAYOR will preside at a meeting to be held at the Mansion House , on Thursday , the 26 th inst ., at 3 p . m ., in connection with the forthcoming Naval and Military Exhibition at the Crystal Palace , which is designed to commemorate the Jubilee of the opening of the Great ' 51 Exhibition in Hyde Park . THE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will hold their regular meeting for the month on Wednesday , the 13 th instant , w'len the Secretary will report the result of the recent Festival and a vote of thanks will b : proposed to the _ Earl of Warwick , Dip . G . Master , Prov . G . Master of Essex , for his kin < nessin presiding on the occasion as Chairman , and the Board of Stewards for t ' e valuable aid they rendered in raising so large a total of Donations and Subscriptions .

SYMPATHY will be expressed in the City for Bro . Alderman Sir John Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., who has sustained a family bereavement in the death of his brother , Mr . Frederick Startbridge Ellis . Mr . Ellis was for many years one of the leading dealers and experts in old books . He was an intimate friend of William Morris , Dante G . Rossetti , and Burne Jones , and for the two former he acted as publisher . Mr . E'lis edited about a dozen of the publications of the Kelmsford Press . He had attained his 71 st year .

PURITY OR WHISKY . —Messrs . Persse and Co ., a well-known firmof distillers of Irish whisky , who have been making a speciality of introducing pure Irish whisky of net less than seven years old , in bottles sealed in their distillery , to the English market , have applied to the Irish Master of the Rolls for an injunction to prevent certain retailers hom selling other whisky in their bottles . 1 'he Master of the Rolls said it was plain a very common fraud had been committed , and he granted a perpetual injunction , defendants to pay costs .

A MOST successful and enjoyable concert was held at 1 , Hanover-park , Peckham , on Thursday , the 2 Sth ult ., under the chairmanship of Bro . A . E . Mullins , P . M . 14 V ) , and P . Z . 720 , ably supported in the vice-chair by Bro . J . H . Cooper , I . P . M . 1475 , the Directors of the Camberwell and Dulwich Pension Society , and an excellent company . The artists were of the highest order , provided by the worthy chairman . A collection was made on behalf of the funds of the Camberwell and Dulwich Penshn Society , which proved very satisfactory , inasmuch as the club was made a Life Governor of that Institution .

MASONIC PRESENTATION . —An interesting ceremony took place at the monthly meeting of the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 35 S , Derbyshire . Bro . C . F . Chamberlin , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., who has been a member of the lodge for nearly 20 years , and has been Secretary for 12 years , being the recipient of a large and handsomely-framed portrait of himself in full regalia , subscribed for by the brethren . The presentation was made by Bro . J . C . Webb , P . M ., and suitably acknowledged by Bro . Chamberlin , who afterwards handed the portrait to the W . M ., on behalf of tbe I idge , si that it may han % on the walls of the lodge room "for all time . "

THE HON . ALBERT EDWARD J HENNIKER-MAJOR , eldest son of Bro . Lord Henniker , Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man , who died in London , on Saturday morning , of double pneumonia , was born in 1865 . He had been private secretary to two Governors of South Australia , and assistant secretary to a former First Lord of the Admiralty . Mr . Henniker-Major formerly held a commission in the 3 rd ( Militia ) Battalion Norfolk Regiment . In consequence of the death of the son of the

Lieutenant-Governor , the sittings of both branches of the Manx Legislature have been postponed . Bro . Lord Henniker , who has four other sons , is descended on the distaff side from Sir John Major , who went round the world with Commodore Anson . The first Baron Henniker married Sir John ^ daughter and co-heir , and adopted the name of Henniker-Major . Bro . Lord Henniker is a popular East Anglian , and until his appointment as Governor of the Isle of Man he was Chairman of the East Suffolk County Council .

MAPLE AND COMPANY , LIMITED . —The nth annual general meeting of the shareholders was held at the Company ' s premises in Tottenham Court-road , on Wednesday , the 27 th ult ., when the Board ot Directors , of whom Bro . Sir J . Blundell Maple , Bart ., M . P ., is the President , delivered their report for the past year . From this it appears that though the gross Departmental returns were not quite equal to those of 1899 , the re-arrangement that has taken place in the administration of the business has allowed the Directors to propose a dividend of equal amount . available at the close of the year reached the sum of £ 154 , 550 18 s . 3 d ., of which , according to the Articles of Association , £ 54 , 147 is added to the Reserve Fund , which accordingly now stands at £ 260 , 535 . Of the 4 , , 403 iSs . 2 d ., there has been paid in respect of interim dividend £ 35 , 937 , and the Directors recommended that of the balance remaining £ 64 , 125 should be devoted to the payment to the shareholders of a further dividend of nine per cent ., and £ 341 Ss . 3 d . carried forward . total dividend for the year 14 per cent . The Directors further announce that the Articles of Association have besn altered in such a way that the Committee of the Stock Exchange have sanctioned the quotation on the Official List of the Preference ana Ordinary Shares of the Company .
