THE MASONIC CHARITIES . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , In reply to the letter of my friend and Brother George Bo ' . rd , which appeared in last wesk's issue , may I say I quite agree with him that every brother in every lodge should qualify as life governor of each

of the great Chanties , and , if he belongs to a province that has a local fund , should also be a subscriber to that . The crux of the position , however , is this , lodges are too apt to accep any one who can scrape " . together the amount necessary for the fees , and very shortly

many of these ( highly respectable persons ) become a charge on the Craft , and ought never to have been admitted amongst us , but should have joined some benefit society . This is a matter which year by year is coming more home to us , and our rulers should do all in their power to check the evil . —Yours fraternally ,

" T EIGNMOUTH THROUGH A CAMERA " ( J . L . Allday Edmund-street , Birmingham ) . —This is an excellent compani in to one recently issued of Exeter , and , as with that beautiful work , is artistically and generally a valuable and interesting souvenir . The text is by the Rev . R . D . Maxwell , and we earnestly hope he will do several others of our " watering places , " and in the same form . VV <

slid the very pretty booklet ( with the fine vi ; ws ) was of the same style as the " Exeter through a Camera , " and so it is , only much better ; for , of the kind , it his no superior and few , if any , equils , for it is published at one shillinr only , and contains quite a number of most choice reproductions of photographs by Valentine of "bonnie Dundee , " each of

which is well worth the price asked for the lot , together with the racy and interesting account of the town and neighbourhood b y Mr . Maxwell . We shall err by saying hut little about this remarkable booklet , quarto size , sewn at the left and thus admirably suiting the exquisite views , as our space is so limited . Our advice therefore to intending tourists is " Get it . "

" FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF _ DERBYSHIRE . " —This well known-and valuable Masonic Annual is in its 19 th year of publication , and continues to be ably edited by Bro . Wm . Naylor , the respected Prov . G . Secretary . This accurate c impilation for 1804 is on the same lines as its immediate predecessors , and gives a full account of all the lodges and chapters and other Masonic bodies in the province , as well as complete

particulars as to the votes for the Central Masonic Charities . There are 25 lodges in the province , and together they and the members have a total of 4413 votes for the London Institutions , and for the Mark PiovinCe , which includes four counties , there are 705 votes for the " Mark Educational and Annuity Fund . " A most creditable record , and proves that enthusiastic Craftsmen do not forget the "distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason ' s heart . "

"FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FORTHE PROVINCE OF ESSEX , 1894 . "—Bro . Thomas J . Railing , the zealous Prov . G . Sec , is the editor of this excellently printed Masonic directory for the province , and as it is now in its ioth year of publication , it may be looked upon as one of the permanent and useful accessories of the Essex Craft . The particulars of the 36 lodges ( three more than in 1893 , and still increasing ) , the 11 chapters , and other organisations , are ably arranged , and are most suggestive

of the progress of the Craft in the province , under the genial rule of the Right Hon . the Earl of Warwick as Prov . G . M ., and the skilful management of the Prov . G . Sec . The total votes of the Charities amount to the large number of 9344 , in lieu of 9033 last year , which' for some 1800 members is most creditable . The tables are capitally arranged , and in over 100 pages there is an immense quantity of most valuable information .

"THE STANDARD POSTAGE STAMP CATALOGUE , 1894 . "—This remarkable publication is in its 54 th edition , and may be had from the well-known and respected firm , the Scott Stamp and Coin Co ., 18 , East 23 rd-street , New York , for half-a-croton , post free . It extends to some 600 pages , and is brimful of information , and numerous illustrations on nearly every page . The prices are very fair for

used and unused stamps- and with such a Guide young Philatelists are practically independent . Its value , however , is great for any and all collectors , and its preparation must have required the labour of a life-time to thus complete and ably arrange such an enormous mass of particulars . It must be seen to be appreciated , the wonder to us being that evsr such a compilition can pay .

"SCOTT STAMP AND COIN COMPANY PREMIUM LIST OR PRICKS PAID BY THE FIRM FOR ALL AMERICAN , COLONIAL , AND UNITED STATES GOLD , SILVER AND COPPER COINS , SIC . " ~ This is the 12 th edition , and will doubtless soon be in the 13 th , for it is a most popular method to indicate the value of coins from a dealer ' s standpoint , and most fair withal . ( Free by post

for 6 d . ) The same enterprising company have issued the "Columbian World's Fair Souvenir , " being the smallest medalette of the Lord s Prayer ever coined , having Columhus on the obverse . If 7 J 0 ; . be sent to the firm at their establishment , 18 , East Twenty-third Street , New York , U . S . A ., a specimen would be sent , in heavy gold plate . Its diameter is about one third of an inch !

" HISTORY OK ST . J ' LODGE , NO . 32 S , TOROUAY , UY W . BRO . J CHAPMAN , P . M ., & c , Sic . "—Bro . Chapman , whose name is known to our readers as the writer of a work on "The Great Pyramid and Freemasonry , " and as the editor of "Metham ' s Masonic Orations , " lias entered the lists as a I odge historian , and g ives us all he has been able to learn about the lodge of which he is a Past

Master . We welcome all these efforts in thc interest of Masonic archaeology , but could have wished that in this case either that the material had been more ample , or the writer ' s efforts to obtain it had been more successful , but this was the author ' s misfortune , and not his fault . Practically it deals with facts in the memory of existing brethren , and Bro . Chapman explains that so long ago as 1871 he made diligent search for the old records of the

lodge , but could only learn that all the old minutes and documents had been consumed by a lire that had destroyed all the effects of one of the founders . A list of meeting places is given , apparently from Bro . John Lane ' s " Masonic Records , 1717-1 SS 6 , " but arethere not ' other places that might be noted as the result of later researches . The Carnarvon warrant mentioned has no connection with the one of St . John's , No . 32 S , of 1 S 10 , as it was dead long before then .

The re-issues of defunct warrants 1 S 00 to 1 S 11 were due to the Act of Parliament 1779 , of which No . 32 S is an instance . The book is interesting as a record of known f let ? , it is well got up , and may possibly lead to a fuller history being published some day . There is an interesting apptndix , containing a ritual as used at the laving of the foundation-stone of the Masonic Hall , Torquay , in 1 S 57 . The publication of the list of Past Masters given on page 25 , ought to bring additions from local sources .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

The happy accident that the Lord Mayor and both the Sheriffs of London are all members of the Craft , lent additional attraction to the now usual Civic visit to the above Institution , which took place in "semistate " last Saturday . The afternoon , fortunately , proved exceptionally fine , and the scene in the grounds on the arrival , punctually at half-past three , of the

handsome carriages containing the City magnates w ; i > excessively bright and animated . Upwards of an hour was agreeably spent in witnessing the calisthenic , musical , and vocal accomplishments of the pupils , which were , as is always the case , excellently performed . The LORD MAYOR addressed the children in feeling

terms , expressing the satisfaction with which he and the 1 ady Mayoress had paid them a visit , and warmly praised their efficiency both in the exercises they had then witnessed , and in the good results of the year ' s examination , on which he especially complimented Miss Davis , the principal , and her staff of teachers , all of whom , he was pleased to hear , had been trained

in the School . Their bright and healthy appearance under the care of Miss Buck , the matron , and those in her department , was also particularly gratifying . Alderman and Sheriff DIMSDALE , Grand Treasurer ; and Alderman and Sheriff MOORE also spoke in terms of warm commendation .

Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON , representing Bro . Edward Terry , the Chairman of the month , who was professionally engaged in London , thanked thc Lord Mayor and Sheriffs for their kind attendance . A large number of visitors were present 011 this very interesting occasion .
