Immense crowds filled the corridors , the occasion of their assembling being lhe election of the Board of General Purposes , for which coveted office there were 2 S candidates , the vacancies being iS . For some reason not yet exp lained , the Grand Officers did not enter Grand Lodge until nearly 7 . 25 , and Grand Lodge was not opened until 7 . 30 p . m . As soon as it was

opened , Earl Amherst called upon the Grand Organist , and directed all the brethren to stand to order . This summons was immediately obeyed , and the Organist played " God Save the -Queen . " To his accompaniment the brethren then sang the first verse ot " God Save the Queen " with great enthusiasm , and to Earl Amherst ' s , " Be seated , brethren , " resumed their seats .

_ ... Earl AMHERST next said that for the convenience of brethren and for the despatch of business he would take the Scrutineers for the ballot before the minutes were read . The Scrutineers were then called up and obligated to make a true and

At the conclusion of the reading of the letter the brethren cheered heartily . When the brethren were seated Earl AMHERST said he had to announce that H . R . Whereupon Bro . Loveland Loveland advanced to the pedestal and was re-invested by Earl Amherst , who shook him heartily by the hand . Earl AMHERST said the next business was the election ol Grand Lodge Auditor . Had any brother any one to propose for that office . Bro . R . LOVELAND L OVELAND , Q . C , proposed Bro . John Smith . There being no other nomination , Earl Amherst declared Bro . John Smith duly re-elected .

The GRAND S ECRETARY read the following names of brethren nominated hy the Grand Master as members of the Committee of Management for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Aged Freemasons and Widows of Freemasons : Bros . Thc report of the Board of General Purposes , as printed in the brce-• mnson last week , was , on the motion of Bro . W . L OVELAND LOVELAND , Q . C , seconded by Bro . VV . J . MASON , taken as read , and oi-iued to be received and entered on the minutes . The report was then unanimously adopted . The Annual Report of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for A ged Freemasons and Widows of Freemasons , of May 1 Sth , tyou , was laid on the table . Bro . JOHN A , FARNI * IELD . P . Asst . G . D . of C , then moved—

"That the sum of ^' 70 be given from the Fund of General Purposes , and that the money be placed in the hands of th * j Se : retary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Aged Frcem . isons and Widows of Freemasons , to supply the inmates of the Institution at Croydon with coals during the winter season . "

He said it almost seemed a sort of irony with the great heat that was in that crowded Grand Lodge to ask for the means of keeping people warm ; but , as the brethren knew , if the motion was not made now it could not be confirmed in September , and then the winter would be on them , and the residents ol the Benevolent Institution would be suffering from cold . The brethren knew Avhat an essential thing it was for poor old people to be kept warm .

Bro . E . VV . NIGHTINGALE , NO . 80 , Durham , and Nos . 87 and 871 ; , London , seconded the motion , which was put and carried unanimously . Bro . J AMES WHITTAKER BURGESS , P . M . No . 1325 , & c , then moved" That for the greater convenience of the Craft , and especially that of the provincial brethren , the Quarterly Communications of Grand Lodge be in future held at six o ' clock instead of seven o ' clock as heretofore . "

He said that without detaining Grand Lodge with many remarks , he might mention that it was for the greater convenience of the provincial and London brethren that he proposed the alteration . He should theretore content himself by proposing that the alteration be made . Bro . L . FERGUSON , P . M . 1997 , in seconding the motion , said he believed

it to be absolutely necessary for the general convenience of Grand Lodge . Bro . Burgess was anxious for the convenience of the Metropolitan as well as for the Provincial brethren , but he , Bro . Ferguson , felt that the Executive officers were entitled to some consideration . Grand Lodge would be glad to lighten their labours in any way they could , and this was a very good method of lightening .

Bro . J STRACHAN , Q . C , said he was very glad to support the motion , which would save the brethren inconvenience , and they could escape from the contaminations of the Metropolis . He sympathised with the brother who had seconded the motion , being one of the Executive Officers himself . The brethren had an object lesson to-night . If the Grand Officers had not been at dinner they would have got out of the whole

of the inconvenience they had suffered . He had taken the trouble to enquire of the brethren since the notice of motion was put on the paper . As to the Executive work of the Grand Officers he found that it was such that they were heartily in favour of the proposal . The Grand Officers had partaken of a dinner which was described as a dinner but which was neither a luncheon nor a high tea , nor a banquet—which was not enough to call a

dinner , and the partaking of it did not enable those to get home to their dinner . It would be a great benefit to the Grand Officers if they did not partake of the Grand Officers mess , but were enabled to get home to their dinner . It was likely to injure the health to partake of the Grand , Officers mess at five o ' clock . He had the approbation of nearly all the Past Grand Officers of the proposal which was now made .

Bro . G . W . SPETH said , if he was in order , he would like to add a rider to this motion . It was perfectly evident . from what had taken place that evening the business of Grand Lodge might be considerably shortened if on the entry of the brethren to Grand Lodge each brother was presented with a copy of the report of the previous meeting . This would enable the Grand

Secretary not to read the minutes . They found at the present meeting that the minutes were of unusual length . If the brethren were presented with a copy the minutes could be taken as read , and the business of Grand Lodge would be expedited . Bro . STRACHAN , Q-C , said the rider proposed was out of order , as it related to a different subject to that mentioned in the notice of motion .

Earl AMHERST said if Bro . Speth would give notice of his motion he might have the support of Grand Lodge .

1 he motion of Bro . Burgess was then put and carried unanimously . Bro . JOHN STRACHAN , Q . C , brought up the appeal by Lodge Palm , No . 2645 , Bassein , Burma , against an alleged ruling of the District Grand Master of Burmah , and moved that the appeal be dismissed . He mentioned that the appeal was , in the first place , out of time , and said that Grand Lodge was ever ready to listen to complaints and to apply a remedy .

But this lodge lost no opportunity of appealing . Great ingenuity had been exercised by this particular lodge in finding a reason for appealing . Even as late as March last this very Bro . Frenchman had an appeal on a trivial subject . If Grand Lodge had appeals on such sli ght subjects , Grand Lodge might be in permanent session in order to dispose of the appeals . He advised the brethren of I . odge Palm to use a little more forbearance and show a little brotherl y love .

Bro . K . W . NIGHTINGALE seconded the dismissal of the appeal , jvhich was unanimously adopted . Earl AMHERST said , as the Scrutineers of the ballot had not yet finished their report , he would take it in his private room . Grand Lodge was then closed in ample form .
