The Quarterly Communication of United Grand Lodge was Held at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday , the Gth instant , under the presidency of the Earl Amherst , M . W . Pro Grand Master . There was a very strong muster of Grand Ollicers and representatives of lodges , and as will be seen from our report

of the proceedings , the business on the Agenda Paper was carried through , the reply of his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , K . G ., M . W . G . Master , to the address of congratulation on his escape from assassination being received with hearty and _ long-continued acclamations .

The Quarterly Communication , of the Grand Lotlge ° f Mark Master Masons of England and Wales , & c , was held at Mark Masons' Hall on Tuesday , the Sth ' 1 st . The Earl ol Euston , M . W . Pro G . M . M ., presided , and this being the meeting for the appointment and investiture of the Grand Officers for the ensuing

>' ear , there was , as usual , a full attendance of the brethren . Everything passed off well , and on Grand Lod ge being closed , there was an adjournment to the t ' reemasons' Tavern adjoining , where the Grand Festal was celebrated . A full report of the proceedings will be found in another column .

The introductory part of the 102 nd Anniversary Festival of the Royal ** Masonic Institution for Boys took place at Wood Green on Friday , the ist instant . Unfortunately the Duchess of Connaught , who had graciously consented to distribute the prizes , was

prevented by a slight attack of influenza from attending and fulfilling her engagement . However , the Princess Margaret of Connaught very kindly ' and very gracefully represented her mother , and the successful pupils had the pleasure of receiving their prizes from

the elder daughter of thc Duke and were thus in seme measure consoled for their disappointment . The report of the , Head Master was eminently satisfactory , the principal features to which he called attention being the fact that , out of " ioS top boys , " as many as

7 8 had oblained certificates at the last Cambridge Local Examinations , and the success of Mr . J . A . Coupland , to whom was awarded the first Grand Lodge Scholarship , and who , among other honours gained during the year , had been awarded the silver medal

for the lirst student at the Leeds Medical School . He also referred to the deep interest taken by the late Prince Consort in technical education , and mentioned that special prominence would be given to this branch of education at the schools now in course of erection at Bushes .

* » * The Duke of Connaught , in acknowledging the vote of thanks to his daughter and himself , expressed the pleasure he had derived from listeningjto so favourable a report of the work accomplished by the School

during the past year , and congratulated the Head Master and his staff on the able manner in which they had discharged their duties . He also said he was pleased to hear of the important part it was intended to assign to technical education in the School , and while

regretting that they were under the necessity of leaving their present home at Wood Green , gave it as his opinion that the removal to Bushey , where they would have larger and better accommodation , would prove a signal benefit to the Institution . The proceedings

shortly afterwards terminated , and the great success which attended them throughout may be taken to augur favourably for the success of the Festival itself . * * *

As in Craft , so in Royal Arch Masonry , there is a very great difference in the matter of numerical strength between the two Provinces into which the County of York is divided . West Yorkshire has 82 lodges and 45 Royal Arch chapters , while North and

East Yorkshire has 34 lodges and 16 Royal Arch chapters . But in the matter of enthusiasm for both branches of pure and ancient Masonry there is little , if anything , to choose between the two . Moreover , as it happens , the two Prov . Grand Chapters held their

annual convocations within a few days of each other , that of West Yorkshire , as recorded in our last week ' s issue , having taken place at Bradford [ on Wednesday ,

the 16 th ult ., and that of North and East Yorkshire at Middlesborough on Tuesday , the 22 nd ult . We are thus in a good position to compare the two as regards the manner in which they carry out their duties .

lt is evident that both take a deep interest in the Royal Arch . The Marquess of Zetland , G . Superintendent , who was fortunately able to preside in person at the meeting of his Prov . G . Chapter , found he was able to congratulate those present on the

revival of Royal Arch Masonry in Selby by the consecration of a new chapter , the chapter formerly existing there having been extinct since 18 79 . It was also in his power to congratulate the Province on the

progress generally that had been made during the past year . This , however , will be more apparent after reading the report of the proceedings , which will be found in another column .

Comp . the Right Hon . W . L . Jackson , M . P ., Grand Superintendent , was prevented by the pressure of his Parliamentary duties from presiding at the meeting of the Prov . Grand Chapter of West Yorkshire out his place was ably filled by the Prov . G . Second Principal ,

Comp . Richard Wilson , who , while expressing satisfaction with what had been done during the past year , urged upon the companions present the necessity for obtaining still greater support for Royal Arch Masonry . He pointed out that the subscribing

members of the chapters in the Province were only about one-third the number of Master Masons , and though he admitted that they were stronger than in other Provinces , he considered they should not rest content with a strength of less than one-half of that of Craft Masonry . He also brought before the

Masonic Notes.

meeting the claims of the South African Masonic Relief Fund , and himself proposed that a sum of 10 guineas should be voted to it from the funds of Prov . Grand Chapter . Subsequently the companions were hospitably entertained by Comp . W . C . Lupton , who is Mayor of Bradford , about 140 of them partaking of tea at the Masonic Hall .

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Masons of Middlesex will meet at the Mitre Hotel , Hampton Court , on Tuesday , June 26 , when Bro , S . Reginald Hanson , Bart ., M . P ., Prov . Grand Master , will be in the chair .

» * * We have been informed that the French lodge " Hiram , " which was recently formed in London , and has been declared clandestine by United Grand Lodge , and against which our lodges and brethren have been officially warned , is disavowed and repudiated by the Grand Orient of France .

» * * Notwithstanding that the Mark Province of East Anglia has been greatly reduced in strength by the erection of Essex , which till last year formed part of it , into a separate Province , the annual meeting of its Grand Lodge , at Cambridge , appears to have been a

successful one . There was a fair attendance , and thc brethren would seem to have enjoyed their visit , and visited the University Museum , King ' s College Chapel and Trinity and St . John ' s Colleges . Moreover a warrant for a ncw Iodge at Norwich has been granted , and henceforth there will be seven , in place of six ,

lodges under the genial rule of Lord Henniker , Prov . G . M . M . As the Province includes the counties of Norfolk , Suffolk , and Cambridge , we may hope that still more new lodges may be formed . There are close on 50 Craft lodges in these counties , so that there is clearly room for a still further increase in the Mark .

# * * Very sincere regret will be felt , more particularly in the Province of Wiltshire , at the unexpected death or Sunday , the 3 rd instant , after only a few days' illness of the Earl of Radnor , Prov . G . Master , Grand Superintendent , and Prov . G . M . Master of Wiltshire . His

lordship had always taken a deep interest in Freemasonry , and five years ago a lodge bearing the name of Radnor was constituted at Folkestone with , if we remember rightly , his lordship as the first W . M . Lord Radnor , who was appointed Prov . G . M . in 1801

and G . Superintendent , and Prov . G . M . Master in 1892 , is succeeded in the title and estates by his eldest son , Bro . Viscount Folkestone , M . P ., who is now laid up with enteric fever in Bloemfontein . Great sympathy will be felt with the Countess of Radnor , to whom we respectfully tender our condolence .

« * The Triennial Festival in behalf of the North and East Yorkshire Educational Fund , which was held at Harker ' s Hotel , York , on Monday , the 21 st ult ., under the auspices of the Marquess of Zetland , Prov . G . M ., and of which a full report appeared in our last issue ,

proved a great success , the total of thc donations and subscriptions announced during the evening being £ l 0 5 i 3 s-, or rather more than the sum realised at the preceding Festival . The Fund has expended in grants , ranging from £ 8 to ^ io per annum , the substantial sum of £ 17 62 , and there are at the present 25 children being provided for . Thus the money

subscribed is producing good results , and we cordially echo the wish expressed by Bro . the Lord Mayor of York , in proposing the toast of Lord Zetland , Prov . G . M ., and Lord Bolton , the Dep . Prov . G . M ., that in the course of time it may be found possible to extend the benefits of the Fund by rendering help to distressed brethren and their widows .

* The particulars set forth by Bro . Manuel in his able resume of the work done by the Logic Club during the session , which closed on the 27 th ult ., testifies abundantly to the success achieved during the past year by this School of Instruction . In October last

when the session opened , there were , he said , " under 100 members and two Grand Ollicers , " now the membership stands at 162 and eight Grand Ollicers . The number of meetings was 35 , and at 34 of these ceremonies were rehearsed . But the most impressive fact of all appears to be that the Club had voted 115

guineas for charitable purposes , a grant of five guineas having been made to the Daily Telegraph Fund ; one of 20 guineas to the South African Masonic Relief Fund ; and 30 guineas to each of the three Central Masonic Institutions . It was announced during the meeting that the Summer outing would take place on Sunday , the 24 instant , "from Boultor ' s Lock by

Electric Launch to Henley , concluding with a Banquet at the Red Lion Hotel . We congratulate the Club , and particularly Bro . Manuel , P . M ., Preceptor , on thc progress that has been made , and having , no doubt , that under him and the able Committee of Management , the future will turn out to be as prosperous aa the past .
