with Freemasonry to be able to say much about it at present , but he would endeavour to follow in the footsteps of the Master and Past Masters of the Iodge . The toast of "The Visitors" was then given and responded to , and the toast of " The Masonic Charities " followed . Bro . James Terry replied , and said that this toast was
never forgotten in the Marquess of Ripon Lodge , and , what was more , it had never failed to be supported in its more practical sense . When he came to consider that Bro . Fisher was the fourteenth Master of the lodge , and that there were now only three Past Masters of the lodge present , it only showed what changes took place in the
history of lodges . Bro . Terry then proceeded to show what strong support the Marquess of Ripon Lodge had given to the Masonic Charities , and mentioned that in the course of its career in the cause of Charity it had sent Stewards to the Festivals of the Institution with which he was more immediately connected . What had been done in the past he felt confident would be done in the future . The W . M .
had said that he was willing to do all he could for the lodge . _ There was a splendid opportunity for him now to flash his maiden sword by standing as Steward on behalf of the old people . The Benevolent Institution was a most deserving one . At the coming election of the Girls ' School , out of 32 candidates , 16 were to be elected . At the election for the Boys' School , out of 44 candidates , 32
were to be elected , so that out of 76 candidates for the two Schools , only 28 could be unsuccessful . Contrast this with the state of the Benevolent Institution at the last election , of which no less than 78 were unsuccessful , and had to stand over for a twelve-month . These people were in great distress , and many of them had seen days of great prosperity . By the time the next election for the Benevolent
Institution came there would probably be 120 or 130 candidates , and how many of them must be refused ! Contrast this state of things with that of the Boys and the Girls —16 girls and 12 boys to be refused , who had somebody to take care of them , while the old people had not . He would commend the jubilee year of her Majesty ' s reign—a Royal event which had not taken place since 1 S 10—as a
fitting opportunity for doing everything in the brethren s power on behalf or their brothers who were in affliction . Bro . W . Gray , P . M ., in responding for the Past Masters , said there was nothing he had more at heart than the interest of this lodge , and if he could at any time render it any service he should do so . Bro . Fisher , in proposing " The Treasurer and
Secretary , said he could not say too many words in favour of Bro . Walford , for he deserved more than he could say . If he gave him ( Bro . Fisher ) the same favours he had given his predecessors , the brethren would all be delighted . Bro . Walford would take the money , and dispense in the best woy he could . He would keep a check on everything and at the end he hoped would have a balance on the right side .
Bro . E . George , I . P . M . and Sec , said the brethren had for many years been indebted to Bro . Walford for his performance of the duties of Treasurer . It was not at all a nice office , as he had learned during the last week or so . Bro . Walford , however , went through it in a very happy way , and did everything very kindly , though he kept a sharp eye on everything . Bro . J . E . Walford , P . M ., Treas ., said he was very
anxious to see the prosperity of the lodge , and he was glad to know that for the last few years it had increased . His duties as Treasurer were pleasing to him . It was no use having a Treasurer unless that brother could provide for the comfort of the lodge , and he was prepared to do that , whether in funds or not , so long as he occupied the post of Treasurer . The other toasts followed and the brethren separated .

him and the brethren all success and happiness in the future . The W . M . responded , and in proposing " The Health of the I . P . After the Masonic toasts , the harmony of the evening was greatly enhanced by music and songs .

M ., was in the chair , and there were about 40 P . M . ' sand brethren present , including several from Hexham , Blyth , Durham , Alnwick , and Newcastle . Bro . John Watt , S . W ., W . M . elect , was very ably installed in the chair of K . S . by
Bro . W . Davidson , P . P . G . J . D ., and the newly-installed Masrer having been saluted and proclaimed , invested the following officers , in addition to the I . P . M ., Bro . W . Davidson : Bros . J . Hann , S . W . ; R . Crawford , J . W . ; W . Storey , Sec ; J . C . Wilson , P . M ., P . P . G . P ., Treas . ; W . H . Atkinson , S . D . ; T . Hutchinson , J . D . ; A . M . Stwds . ; and J . Thompson , Tyler . TheW . D . P . G . M ., Bro . R . H . Holmes , paid a visit to the Iodge on the occasion . The annual banquet was afterwards held at the Queen's Head ( Mrs . Bowman ' s ) . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , that ot " The Retiring P . G . M ., the Right Hon . Earl Percy , " meeting with a most enthusiastic reception .
RIVERHEAD . —Amherst Lodge ( No . 1223 ) . — The last meeting this year of this lodge was held on Saturday , the 2 nd inst ., and there was sufficient of interest in the proceedings to attract a good number of the members , who are pretty much scattered as regards residence . The absence of some of the assistant oflicers gave an opportunity for others to show their proficiency , and there
is no doubt that will be had in memory at the proper time . Bro . E . Strange , W . M .. opened the lodge with commendable punctuality , supported by Bros . J . S . Birch , S . W . W . Sparrowhawk , J . W . ; F . P . Lee , I . G ., acting S . D . j Hooker , acting J . D . ; Pascoe , Asst . Org ., acting I . G . ; and Craig , I . P . M . The Past Masters present were Bros , Duret , Birch , and Baker ; and the visitors : Bros . W . H .
Lee , Prov . Asst . G . S . Middx ., P . M . 97 s j C H . Hogben , W . M . 1678 ; W . Drewett , J . W . 8 S 9 , 163 S ; and Morgan , 1 S 26 . After formal business Bro . Josiah Willmot was advanced to the Degree of F . C . ; and Bro . Thos . Potter was raised to the Sublime Degree , both ceremonies being being ably performed by the W . M , his working of thc
Third Degree being specially praiseworthy , in fact , worthy of " Emulation . " The true spirit of Masonry was exhibited by the unanimity with which the motion made by Bro . C E . Birch , P . M ., was received , the effect of which was the grant of ten guineas to the widow of a deceased brother . A goodly sum has also been subscribed by the members individually . Other business of interest to the lodge only
was transacted , and after " Hearty good wishes" had been tendered , lodge was closed . It should be mentioned though that the Secretary notified that the absence of one of the most respected of the P . M . 's , Bro . E . J . Dodd , was through an accident which befel him , by which he sustained somewhat serious injury to the shoulder and
collar bone . Bro . H . Dodd was , however , able to report that satisfactory progress was being made , and that was most pleasing news to the members . Bro . H . Dodd was asked to convey to the sufferer the sympathy of the brethren , and their earnest desire that he might speedily be convalescent .
Refreshment came on in due course , and Bro . Waller , who is ever equal to Ihc occasion , proved himself a host indeed . During the evening it was incidentally mentioned that there was a hope soon of an addition being made to the Amherst Arms Hotel . At present the Iodge works in a schoolroom on the other side of the way , and the accommodation which Bro . Waller has is insufiicent for "big "
days , so that the erection of a large room , with convenient offices , will be not only a comfort to the brethren , but also a great acquisition to the present and future landlords of the house . The evening was most pleasantly spent . The W . M . sang a capital song , and the I . P . M . was well to the fore with " Father O'Flynn . " The S . W . told of what was coming " Some Day , " while the worthy Secretary proved himself a perfect " jewel" by the way in which he recited
his difficulty in settling whether he was really Jacob or Hans . Bro- VV . Lloyd's office as Steward was no sinecure ; but he did his work so well , that everyone was desirous of thanking him most cordially ; while Bro . Waller's excellent catering called forth high praise from the W . M . When the parting hour came all were sorry , and it was rather vexing to find that a whole half-hour had to be spent at the railway station in waiting for the S . E . " 9 . 30 . "
LIVERPOOL . —Dramatic Lodge ( No . 16 * 09 ) . — The installation meeting of this Iodge , which is one of the most influential lodges in the Province of West Lancashire , was held on the afternoon of the 28 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope-street , and was attended by a very large proportion of the members of the lodge , who belong chiefly to the dramatic , musical , and literary professions . After the Masonic toasts , the harmony of the evening was greatly enhanced by music and songs .

E . " 9 . 30 . "
