carried out the duties of the first chair better . The clear enunciation , the pleasing voice , and the dignified bearing of Comp . Heming were powerful , personal advantages , and gave additional impressiveness to his rendering of the beautiful ritual of the Royal Arch . In conclusion , he could honestly say that their First Principal was held in the highest esteem by every member of the chapter , and would carry with him on his retirement from the chair every good wish

for his future health and happiness . The toast having been most warmly received , the M . E . Z . briefly replied . In responding to the toast of " The Visitors , " Comp . Shirley , after briefly touching upon the antiquity of the chapter , passed a high compliment upon the general excellence of the working he had witnessed that evening . The

LP . Z . had spoken by no means in too flattering terms of their First Principal . As an admirer and student of the Royal Arch Degree , he , the speaker , was prepared to say that he had never heard the ritual better delivered . The working of the Second and Third Principals , and the S . N .

and P . S . also left nothing to be desired . In conclusion , be expressed his great acknowledgments to Comp . Lardner for giving him an opportunity of visiting so distinguished and excellent a chapter . A few other toasts followed , and the proceedings terminated .

Islington Chapter ( No . 1471 ) . —The installation meeting of this successful chapter was held at the Cock Tavern , Highbury , on Wednesday , the 30 th ult , when there was an unusually large number of companions present . There was a heavy programme of work , which was ably carried out by Comp . W . Shurmur , who had been re-elected to the position of M . E . Z ., and who proved the

M . E . Z ., and Comp . Lister , H . elect , being unavoidably absent , there was but one installation to be performed , viz ., that of Comp . J . M . Scarlett , as J ., which was ably carried out by Comp . Jas . Terry , P . G . S . B . The other officers invested were Comps S . Napper , S . E . ; R . Loomes , S . N . ; VV . E . Sutton , P . Beer , 1471 ; N . Fortescue , 2256 ; J . Hanks , 2256 ; and three others having been duly balloted for , were impressively exalted into R . A . Masonry . The M . E . Z . was nominated as Steward forthe R . M . B . L , and the sum of 10 guineas was

voted to his list . Two resignations were accepted with regret , and the convocation was closed . An excellent banquet was then enjoyed , and the usual toasts were subsequently given . Comp . F . Binckes , P . G . S . B ., replying for "The Grand Officers , " said the importance of the toast could not be under-valued , because it was of so comprehensive a nature .

He was especially grateful for the manner in which his name had been associated , and the exceedingly complimentary manner in which it had been received . He would leave to Comp . Hogard to speak of the two distinguished Grand Officers , to whom the M . E . Z . had made specific allusion . From the experience he had had of that chapter on more than one occasion , he had been a

welcome guest . That night he found himself specially so , and nothing had given him greater pleasure than to be present at an important portion of the ceremonial , to which he listened with rapt attention , it being delivered so ably . From the exceedingly large number admitted , and from the mode of its working , the chapter had secured a reputation second to none . Although not perfect in the ritual himself ,

he was thoroughly able to appreciate skill and ability in others , and if merit was to be rewarded , if perseverance was to be recognised , then he would humbly submit that the ranks of the Supreme Grand Chapter should be largely recruited from the members of the Islington Chapter . He returned his sincere thanks , and expressed the hope that on a future date he would be enabled to again visit them .

Comp . C . I ' . Hogard , P . D . G . D . C , also responded . Comp . W . S . Whitaker , P . Z ., said he was quite sure he had but to pronounce the name of the M . E . Z . to ensure it meeting with a warm reception . The companions , a short time ago , proved in the most unmistakable manner their confidence in Comp . W . Shurmur by electing him for the second time to the chair of M . E . Z . The M . E . Z . had

commenced his second year in a manner plain to all , and would fulfil his duties to the pleasure and satisfaction of all the members . They had also voted him a jewel , which every P . Z . had richly earned , and there was no Principal of their chapter who had earned it better than Comp . Shurmur . It afforded him ( Comp . Whitaker ) sincere pleasure to pin that jewel on his breast

and know he would wear it with honour and pleasure . Comp . W . Shurmur , M . E . Z ., thanked Comp . VVhitaker , P . Z ., for the kind and felicitous and far too flattering way in which he had proposed the toast of his health . He also thanked the companions most cordially forthe hearty reception given to that toast . He could not adequately express his gratitude to them for having again elected him as First

Principal , and would honestly endeavour to prove his appreciation of the very high compliment paid him by promoting the happiness and prosperity of the chapter to the utmost of his power . As to the further mark- of their favour , the jewel , he should always esteem it as one of the most valuable of his possessions , and he earnestly hoped he might be blessed with long life to wear it among the P . Z . 's .

Royal Arch.

The M . E . Z . then gave "The Second and Third Principals , " and thanked Comp . Sparrow , P . Z ., forthe admirable manner in which he had acted as H . He had told Comp . Scarlett , J ., privately how surprised he had been at the way in which the historical lecture had been rendered , and the companions must all have been pleased . Comps . Sparrow , P . Z ., acting H ., and Scarlett , J .,

returned thanks . "The P . Z . 's" was the next toast given by the M . E . Z ., who said he had been personally deeply impressed by the manner in which they discharged their duties , and he determined , if ever it was his fortune to reach the chair , to endeavour to imitate their very good example . He included with the toast " The Installing Officer , Comp . Jas . Terry . " Comps . Whitaker , P . Z ., and J . L . Mather , P . Z ., P . A . G .

D . C , having replied , Comp . Jas . Terry , P . Z ., P . G . S . B ., returned thanks . He said he had installed many Principals in that chapter , and was pleased to have the privilege of installing Comp . Scarlett as J . that evening , because he knew full well that that companion was born for the position . As one of the founders—and there were but four left—he felt a

deep interest in the chapter . When he was the First Principal he thought it an honour to exalt eight brethren during his year , but the M . E . Z . had that night exalted 11 , and brought together a larger gathering of R A . Masons than the oldest companion had seen on a chapter meeting . He ventured to think that the step taken three months ago was a right one . They saw that evening the good results of that step , and he

had not the slightest doubt that before the M . E . Z . 's year of office was out they would have cause to rejoice that for the first time in their chapter the First Principal was filling thc chair for the second time . The P . Z . ' s had but one desire , whatever their position and ability—to do their best for the chapter , and to render help and assistance to those filling the principal chairs . He wished the M . E . Z . a most happy and prosperous year of office , and if anything could be done

by the P . Z . 's they would most readily come forward . Comp . Holness , P . Z ., also responded . " The Exaltees , " "The Visitors , " and other toasts were duly given , and the Janitor ' s toast concluded a very successful , pleasant , and instructive gathering . Comp . Dr . Haskins conducted the musical arrangements , which were of an excellent character . He was ably supported by Messrs . Bartlett and Church , jun .

S . Jackson and VV . VV . Futcher , Stewards . Bros . W . H . Caton , W . M . 136 5 ; H . Guy Elliott , 749 ; H . P . Kimbell , 1364 ; Caleb Stanger , W . M . 12 ; H . Poston , 19 ; E . A .
