would not in the least suffer from want of proper instruction . To mark their apprecia tion , our VV . M . had just received the following telegram : " Congratulations and best wishes from the VV . M ., said il was a very proud moment of his life to be in
that position at the seventh year of the lodge's existence . His endeavour would be to justify the choico of the brethren , as VV . M ., and if at the end they discovered any lack it would not be through want of zeal on his part , as his heart was with them . It was now 33 years since he rehearsed the ceremony , as W . M ., but he would do his very utmost and thanked them most heartily for such a reception . '
' 1 he VV . M . next gave the toast of " The Visitors " with a good hearty cheer from the brethren of the Bushey Mall Lodge . They were al ! most heartily welcomed , and the VV . upon the excellent working and good fellowship which prevailed . Bro . Ayres specially commented upon the excellent services rendered by the Prov . G . M ., Bro . Halsey , during the term of 21 years in that position . His services had been acknowledged for the general good , and more particularly in the cause of Freemasonry . On behalf of the visitors they most cordially thanked the brethren .

Thc lodge had now six , who in their day had done splendid service to the lodge , especially mentioning Bro . Keyser , who was obli ged to leave early , living in Berkshire . 'This was most ably responded to by Bro . Birch , who on behalf of the I . P . M . and the rest of the Past Masters , wished the VV . M . a most successful year of office . It was entirely with the VV . M . that the idea of founding the lodge arose , and he most heartil y congratulated him on now being the Master .
The W . M ., in presenting the next toast—that of "The Officers , " said it was a most important one . They all did their work admirably , from the lowest to the hi ghest . Bro . Bilby , S . W ., replied most cordially , and trusted the VV . M . would not have cause to regret his choice in any of them . The Tyler ' s toast closed a most eventful evening . The VV . The repast ended , and grace said , the usual toast list claimed attention .
'The first to receive serious response was that of " 'The Charities , " to which liro . VV . Klingenstein replied in a neat speech pregnant with charitable enthusiasm , ami dilating upon the excellence of the Institutions , and the great interest taken in them bj the M . W . G . M . and the rest of the Grand Ollicers . " The W . M . " having been proposed in eulogistic terms ,
Bro . Emblin said : Past Masters , officers , and brethren , I thank you for the coiclial reception you have given to this toast . 1 am very pleased to occupy this chair again under such pleasant surroundings , but I greatly regret—and I am sure you all share trial regret with me—at the unfortunate cause of my occupying this position this evening . Our VV . M . elect is not dangerously ill , but without care his malady might become so . Perhaps the worst part of it is that bis term of office will be less than the full term necessary to entitle him to rank as a Past Master of this lod ge . As he is already a Past
Master , that is not so serious as it would be to one elected to that position for the lirst time . During my year of office I wish you had given me more work to do ; however , I think you will be pleased with the balance-sheet for the year ; the principal credit fur that is due to the Treasurer for the way he takes care of your funds —( The Treasurer remarked that his duties were very light)—and to the Secretary for the accurate way he kept the booksand attends to every detail of his ollice . I am very pleased the Treasurer has given notice of motion to put 10 guineas of the lodge funds on the list of our W . M . elect for the Girls' School . When 1 went up as Steward for that Institution 1 occupied
the premier position for all-England , and I hope you will support Bro . Phillips , and p lace him in the same proud position this year ; both to the credit of himself and the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge —( liru . F . Smithson , P . G . D ., here entered the room , and received a cordial welcome ) . Before resuming my seat , I have great pleasure in proposing the next toast , which is that ot " The Past Masters "—not a numerous body , but the best quality . 1 shall couple with this toast the name of our highly esteemed lirst Master—Bro . VV . 11 . Bullock—and although Bro . Smithson is not a Past Master , he ought to have been , and 1 shall ask him to say a few words . Bro . VV . II . Bullock having biicily replied ,
Bro . VV . F . Smithson , P . G . D ., said : Worshipful Master , ollicers , and brethren , il is true I am not a Past Master of this lodge , but 1 never forget the compliment you p-iid me in inviting me to be your first VV . M . Other engagements prevented me accepting that position , but 1 attended your meetings , and gave you all the advice and assistance I could to get your warrant , and have taken a great interest in the progress and prosperity of the lodge . I have received every lodge summons since the foundation , and carelully keep them . I am pleased to see , and congratulate you upon having done so
much for the Chanties . I hope you will go on and prosper , and never forget tn ,: advice I have always given—only to admit good men and truej carefully keep out all unarm" ' ' candidates who would join liom unworthy motives or simply out of curiosity , and ne . er lose sight of the lirst principals of the Order . received , and their . splendid hospitality . Bros . Saunders , Zache , and Whicher also replied , the latter causing some amusement by forgetting whether he was a member or a visitor . would not in the least suffer from want of proper instruction . To mark their apprecia tion , our VV . M . had just received the following telegram : " Congratulations and best wishes from the VV . M ., officers , ami brethren of the Lodge of Industry , Gateshead Durham . " He would ask the brethren to drink to it in bumpers . ' In reply , Bro . Banning , W .
M . trusted they would one and all carry away with them a very pleasant recollection of the lodge . Bros . Carter , W . M . 404 , and Ayres , P . M . 404 , most suitably replied , remarking
upon the excellent working and good fellowship which prevailed .
The toast of " The Past Masters " was most cordially presented by the VV . M ., w h 0 remarked upon their inestimable value .
An excellent programme of music was rendered , under the directioii of Bro . Prof . J . II . Leipold , G . S . M ., ably assisted by Miss Amy Sargent , Miss Lilian Close , Mr . ( J . Lcipold ( violinist ) , Mr . Ambrose Thome , and Bros . VV . H . Wheeler and W . Sychclmoore . Bro . J . II . Leipold very ably presided at the piano .

The VV . M . elect being unable to attend for installation , thc business consisted in appointing and investing the ollicers , receiving the Auditors' report , notices of motion , and a vote of sympathy , after which the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , served in Host Blackliy ' s most approved style .
When I arrived at this hotel to-ingfij late and tired , I felt I should like to come and spend a pleasant half-huur with you , " >¦' althuugh not having on a wedding garment I came in . I am pleased to see so many ulJ
Iriends and thank you for the hearty receptiun you have given me . ,, Bro . Shannan ( who came Iroin Lincoln to be present ) replying for "The Visiters , expressed regret and disappointment at the absence of the VV . M . elect , as soon as he heard that a lodge composed almost exclusively of members of the tobacco trade ha " been founded he determined to take the first opportunity of visiting it , he was sorry there was no ceremony , but he thanked the brethren for the cordial welcome he liacl
received , and their . splendid hospitality . Bros . Saunders , Zache , and Whicher also replied , the latter causing some amusement by forgetting whether he was a member or a visitor . " the I reasurer and Secretary , " proposed by the W . M . in complimentary te . ""' met with a hearty reception , and liro . Klingenstein having brielly replied , < - Bro . Scholding said : W .
