Craft Masonry.

never had a wry word vvith any brother of the Lewis Lodge . I remember distinctly when I was initiated by Bro . Powell together vvith the S . W . and J . W ., making use of something of this rxpressim : " That I looked upon Masonry as being such a brilliant light that I could not possibly hope to add one ray to its brilliancy , " but I also added this sentiment : " I hoped the day would never dawn when I should cast a shadow over its fair fame . " The

appreciative remarks of the I . P . M . lead me to think that that dav has no yet dawned . The W . M . said : It is novv my proud privilege to propose to you the toast of "The I . P . M . " He his laboured well during the past year , and is in all ways worthy of the jewel vvhich the lodge unanimously voted him , and vvhich I now present to him , and I am sure vve ali express a devout prayer that T . G . A . O . T . U . vvill give him many years of

happiness and prosperity to wear the jewel of his mother lodg-e . Bro . Keddell : W . M . and Brethren , —I appreciate to the full the compliment you have paid me in drinking my health so heartily and presenting me vvith this jewel . I shall wear it vvith pride for two reasons—one is that 1 feel sure that not only is it an expression of appreciation of my work during the past year , it is the outcome of the brotherly feeling

vvhich exists between myself and every brother of the lodge . The other is the consciousness that I have filled every office in the lodge . Bro . Usherwood , in proposing the toast of " The Initiates , " said he vvas very pleased to have to propose the health of a brother who , he was sure , would prove a credit to the Lewis Lodge . The seriousness with vvhich they had taken the First Degree convinced him that they possessed

the qualities of a good Free and Accepted Mason . The toast vvas cordially received , and , in reply , Bro . Jackson said : I suppose there comes a time in every man ' s life when he realises the truth of the old proverb" Speech is silver , but silence is golden . " Now , that is my experience at the present time . I would far rather have the golden portion ; but I have learned that oDedience is one of the first lavvsof Freemasonry , and , as the W . M . has called

upen me to say a few words , I must submit . When a member of my profession rises to speak , his hearers generally settle themselves down to a firstly , secon My , thirdly , and fourthly application , but to-night I shall confine myself to two points . In the first place , I have been particularly struck with the decorum and solemnity vvith vvhich

the ceremony through vvhich I have passed to-night has been conducted . Then , again , the Craft has a reputation for genuine Brotherhood , vvhich certainly appears to exist in the Lewis Lodge . 1 am pleased to become identified vvith the Fraternity , and thank you for admitting me a member of your lodge . Bro . Demara also suitably replied .

M ., whose working vvas of the very best , and it vvas much

appreciated by the members and visitors . The next duty of the W . M . vvas , as he remarked , a very pleasant one , to present Bro . C W . Stephenson , the LP . M ., with a Past Master's jewel for his able services in thc chair , and he ( the W . M . ) hoped to have his great assistance and counsel during his year of office . Bro . Stephenson , in suitable terms , expressed his heartfelt thanks for the kind appreciation of his services , vvhich to him vvas an honour and

pleasure . ' 1 he lodge vvas then closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , vvhich vvas prepared by Bro . Cloots in his well known style , and ably served under his personal superintendence . The Worshipful Master gave the loyal and Masonic toasts , vvhich vvere duly honoured . Bro . C . W . Stephenson , I . P . M ., in proposing " The Health of the W . M ., " said that it was vvith the greatest

pleasure he submitted the toast . The members had seen that night the more than excellent working of the ritual by their W . M . and they vvere proud to have such an efficient wnkman and one vvho would fulfil all his duties admirably , and he tendered him his hearty congratulations and whhed him a happy year of office . The toast was drunk with enthusiasm , and Bro . R . J . C . Davis , on rising to respond , had a great reception , ln

biief hut tlcquent terms h" stated that he could not express in words vvhat he felt at that moment . He had attained thc height of his ambition in that his mother and only lodge . He never thought that he would have sufficient ability to occupy the chair , but novv that he was in that proud position he would do his very best to keep up the great prestige of the lodge . In giving the toast of "The Initiate , " the W . M . observed

that the lodge was fortunate in having a steady inflow of new members . He was glad to receive Bro . S . Barwell in the lodge , and he vvas proud of having an initiate at his ( the W . M . ' s ) installation . Bro . Barwell , in responding , said that while he was undergoing the ordeal of initiation hc was not asked to say much , but it appeared , to him that at the banqueting tajle more vvas expected of him . He hoped to become a

good Mason , and a credit to the lodge . If at any time he was asked and could render any assistance , he would be only too glad to do anything for the good of the Craft . 'Ihe W . M . gave " The Visitors , " and he coupled with the toast the name of Bro . C . Kempton , oi the Queen ' s Westminster Lodge , remarking that the members were greatly indebted to that lodge , as it vvas through their aid that the Imperial Lodge had succeeded in getting Miss Gladys Jones , a daughter of their deceased member , elected

at the head of the poll at the last Girls' election on her first application . Bro . Kempton responded , stating that he vvas proud to be present that evening and to reply to the toast . He had seen the working in many lodges , but that of their W . M . could notbe excelled . He felt sure that the initiate would never forget vvhat he had gone through , the ceremony having been so beautifully performed . He vvas indeed glad

that Miss Jones had been elected on her first attempt . Her father , Bro . Jones , vvas a member of his regiment , where he vvas honoured and respected . "The Past Masters" vvas next given , the W . M . making special men ' . ion of Bro . C . W . Stephenson , LP . M . Bro . Stephenson , in reply , said that he had received kindness from them all , and he took that opportunity to thank his officers and the Past Masters for their great

support while he vvas in the chair . He appreciated the jewel vvhich had been presented to him , and vvhich he should always honour . Bro . W . F . Woods , P . M ., also responded . He stated that when he vvas the W . M . of the lodge , he had initiated four of the officers vvho had been invested that evening , and he vvas more than proud that his initiates were going forward . Their genial W . M . would not require any assistance ,

but if he did , the Past Masters would be willing to do anything to promote the interests of the lodge . Bros . H . Clarke , P . M ., and Cumberland , also replied , the latter remarking that the W . M . vvas his child , he having introduced him into Masonry , and he vvas gratified to see him in his exalted position . In eulogistic terms , the Worshipful Master proposed "The Officers . " He had perfect confidence in them , and

vvho he felt sure would give him punctual attendance and everv assistance . He coupled the names of the Treasurer and Secretary , remarking that they vvere both efficient and indefatigable ofiicers , and had done everything to make the the lodge the great success it vvas . Bro . R . Kradley replied in an able speech , observing that if it fell to his lot to go into the chair , he would hope to do the working as well as thU so ably performed by their W . M .

Bro . G . krehl also responded , ln eloquent and pathetic terms he referred to the late Bros . Nichols and Jones , vvho had died in the past year . Bros . Reid Todd , Treas ., and J . N . 'Frye , P . It would he foolish if he vvere to attempt to say a word about the quality of these brethren ; most cr

them vvere well known in the State , well known in socw life , well known in Masonry . What more could be said- ot men so well known . Several of them vvere members of Ine lodge and he sincerely hoped as years went by they would have many more , because the lodge was a rallying po for noithern Masons , especially of the northern provinces which took interest in thc Masonic Charities , who came "P elec

four or live times a year to the Charity meetings and - tions with very large inlluence . Bro . Jackson , "" ' } , " " nately for his ofiice , succeeded a brother , a member ot tins lodge , Bro . Tew , a man whose name vvas a household woro in thc northern counties and in this lodge , a man they ai respected and loved deeply . If Bro . Jackson succeed ™ half as well as Bro . Tew he would be thoug ht of well in tn « lodge and in the province .
