Order Of The Secret Monitor.
Order of the Secret Monitor .
GRAND COUNCIL . The ordinary meeting of the Grand Council of this Order vvas held at Mark Masons' Hall on the evening of Friday , the ist inst ., and in the absence—through illness—of Bro . Dr . Zacharie , the Grand Supreme Ruler of the Order , the chair was taken by Bro . James Lewis Thomas , Past Grand Supreme Ruler . Bros . W .
G . Lemon , Past G . Treas . ; Tickle , Grand Guide ; Lamette , G . Visitor ; Spratling , G . Recorder ; Dr , Stewart Browne , E . Jessurun , J . A . Thilthorpe , H . H , Shirley , F . E . Lemon , H . Tipper , and other Grand Officers , also Bro . Dr . H . W . Roberts , President of the Board of Grand Stewards for the year , with Bro . E . J . Mills , G . Sentinel , were present .
The Chairman reported that he had that day seen Bro . Dr . Zacharie , and found him to ill to leave his bed , and that he had come at his request to preside over this , the winter meeting of Grand Council . He expressed the sorrow all must feel at the absence of their Ruler , who had never before been absent from any of the functions of the Order , and on this occasion
was prevented from attending only by serious bodil y weakness and the strict injunctions of his physician . Later in the course of the proceedings the Grand Recorder Was requested to write a letter of sympathy with their sick and absent chief . The business of the evening was chiefly formal , but it included some matters of discipline with regard tc
certain conclaves , reported by the Grand Visitors of the year as not quite up to the mark in certain particulars . Strange to say , however , the peccant conclaves either by letter just come to hand or by the mouth of a representative present at the meeting gave , for the most part , free and full assurance of that penitence which averts the chastening hand uplifted ,
and leaves the amplest room for repentance and reform . The Grand Council passed the accompanying resolution of sympathy with the friends of a brother who has lately died , and whose death has left a blank not easily to be filled up , in more than one Masonic circle that mourns his loss .
The motion vvas made from the chair , and was seconded and supported in eloquent and affecting terms by Bros . J . TICKLE and W . G . LEMON , who mourned him as a brother true as steel , trusted and tried , always ready with sympathy and help , and always prepared with those little acts of courtesy and kindness that go so far to make Masonic life what it is
to those who imbibe its doctrines at the true inspired fount . As a Mason and a man , Bro . Felix Gottlieb was a genuine , high-principled English gentleman , and as the administrator of a large district , he proved himself energetic , full of resource , and enthusiastic in all his work . He has gone from a world where he bore more than his share of bodily suffering , and , if true
Masonic teaching is to have credence , he has entered into the reward of those vvho faithfully perform their allotted task during their brief span of life below" That Grand Council hereby desires to place upon record its deep sense of the heavy loss the Order has sustained by the lamented death of Bro . Felix Gottlieb , Past Grand Visitor , and District Grand Supreme Ruler
of the District of the Straits Settlements , a loss which will be felt by Masonry universally , and desires to be allowed respectfully to offer an expression of heartfelt sympathy and condolence with his son , Bro . George Gottlieb , P . G . C , and the other members of the bereaved family , as well as with the brethren of the district . "
Bros . Tickle , J . J . Pakes , and Dr . Stewart Browne vvere elected members of the Executive Committee for the ensuing year , and Bro . E . J . Mills was re-elected Grand Sentinel . The accounts showed a balance in hand of nearly £ 70 in cash , with many more returns to come in , and as the Grand Recorder was careful to explain , a goodly
supply on hand of those vendibles demanded by the brethren of the Order . After voting the usual honorarium to the Grand Recorder and £ 10 to the fund for supporting a conclave of instruction , the meeting was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent grill supplied by Bro . Hamp , mine host of the Holborn Restaurant . Our readers vvill be interested in learning that the
Deputy Ruler of the Order , who was prevented from being presentby the serious illness of his father , hassince become , by his father ' s lamented death , the same nig ht , thc Earl of Warwick . Lord Halsbury has been for some years the Grand Chancellor of the Order , and Bros , the Earl of Euston and Lieut .-Col . George Lambert , who is now Grand Treasurer , have ranked among its high officials ever since its importation into this country in 1887 .
