There vvas , as will be seen from the very ample report we publish elsewhere , a very full attendance of members at the meeting of Grand Lodge on Wednesday . Moreover , the business entered on the agenda
vvas carried through satisfactorily , so that when Grand Lodge was closed , the brethren who attended must have returned home well satisfied that they had something accomplished , something done to very excellent purpose . #
* * The brethren nominated for the office of Grand Treasurer for thc ensuing year were four in number , and included , in addition to Bros . Shurmur and Stiles , whom we referred to last week as candidates , Bro .
Alderman and Sheriff Dimsdale , banker , a P . M . of Grand Master ' s Lodge , No . 1 , and Bro . C . W . Hudson , a P . M ., and P . P . G . W . of Sussex . On no previous occasion , since the practice has been adopted of electing a new Grand Treasurer every year , has Grand Lodge had so many candidates nominated for the ofiice .
Masonic Notes.
As forthe scheme proposed hythe Bd . of Gen . Purps . for revising the salaiies of the G . Secretary ' s staff , it was , as vve anticipated , carried vvith practical unanimity . It is true that Bro . Eve , P . G . Treas ., probably by way of variety from the concord of praise which the proposal evoked , expressed his belief that Grand
Lodge vvas paying too much for the management of its income . This income , he pointed out , was about . £ 25 , 000 a year , and , looking at the matter from a commercial point of view , he considered ^ 3300 vvas far too high a sum to pay for expenses of management . But , vvith all due deference to Bro . Eve , Freemasonry is about as far removed from being a commercial undertaking as
the poles are asunder ; and , in the next place , commercial undertakings differ so materially from each other , that it is next to impossible to adopt anything like a uniform rate of outlay in respect of management . One business which brings in " ^ 20 , 000 a year may cost as much as another which yields . £ 200 , 000 .
If , indeed , we may be permitted , for the moment , to adopt Bro . Eve ' s suggestion that Grand Lodge is a commercial undertaking , vve may at the same time take the liberty of pointing out that if the fees and dues now payable to it were doubled it would cost no more to collect them than it does novv . It is not the amount collected which has to be taken into consideration , but the area
from which it is collected , and this has been extended beyond all precedent during the Prince of Wales's Grand Mastership . The dues and fees remain pretty nearly at the rates they were when his Royal Highness vvas installed some 18 years ago , but they are collected from nearly a thousand more lodges and a proportionate increase of Royal Arch chapters .
* * * The list of lodges to which his Royal Highness , the M . W . Grand Master has been pleased to grant warrants since the last Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge is somewhat smaller thau usual , the number being only six , and , singular to relate , not one of the new lodges thus constituted vvill be located abroad .
Two of them meet in the London district , the Eccentric and the Willesden Lodges , Nos . 24 . SS and 2489 respectively ; and of the remaining four , one — the Ampthill , No . 2490—is on the roll of Bedfordshire ; another—the Concordia , No . 2492—on that of Bucks ; a third—the St . Michael's , No . 2487—in Staffordshire ; and the fourth—the White Rose of York , No . 2491 — in West Yorkshire .
* * * The report presented by the General Board at the meeting of Mark Grand Lodge on Tuesday , shows that two new lodges have been added to thc roll during the past year , and that 25 s Mark and 38 Royal Ark Mariner certificates have been issued , raising the
number of Mark Master Masons registered to 31 , 777 and of Royal Ark Mariners to 4018 . The Board also reports that the Albany Mark Lodge , meeting at Newport , Isle of Wight , which has hitherto worked under Time Immemorial authority without a warrant , has thrown in its lot vvith the Mark Grand Lodge , Bro . W .
W . B . Beach , M . P ., Prov . G . M . Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , having administered the oath of allegiance to its members , and installed the Master elect There are thus no more Mark lodges working independently , this being thc last to give in its adhesion to the new order of things . * * »
We very much regret to announce the death of Bro . W . Potter , Q . C , W . M . of the Northern Bar Lodge , No . 1610 . Thc sad event occurred quite recently at our respected brother's chambers , in Paper Buildings , Temple , after only a fevvdajs' illness , from pneumonia and influenza . Bro . Potter vvas born in 1 S 38 , called to the
Bar at the Inner Temple in 1 S 61 , and shortly afterwards joined the Northern Bar Lodge . He took silk in 18 S 01 and vvas elected a Bencher of his Inn the year following . Our deceased brother was highly respected both professionally and in his lodge , and vve offer our sincere condolence to the relatives and numerous friends who are now mourning his untimely death .
* * * General sympathy will be felt with Bro . Lord Brooke , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master of Essex , on the recent death , at the age of 7 6 years , of his father the Earl of Warwick . Lord Warwick had been in feeble health for some time past , and his demise was not entirely
unexpected . The funeral took place on Wednesday in thc Church of St . Mary , Warwick , among the mourners present being Bro . Lord Brooke ( now Earl of Warwick ) , Bro . Captain the Hon . A . H . Fulke-Greville , the Hon . L . Greville , the Hon . S . Greville , Bro . Lord Elclio , M . P . ; Bros . Lord Leigh , G . W . J . Repton , and the Earl of Dartmouth , with others , being thc pall-bearers .
Masonic Notes.
Among the wreaths sent were one from the Prince ol Wales , and one from the Duchess of York and the Duke and Duchess of Teck . * ¦ * * We heartily congratulate Bro . J . Morrison McLeod , the Secretary of thc Royal Masonic Institution for
Boys , on his marriage . The auspicious event took place on Tuesday , at St . Paul's Church , Rusthall , Tunbridge , the officiating clergymen being Bros , the Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . Chap ., and the Rev . IL A . Hebb , M . A ., Head Master of the School , the bride being given
away by Bro . George Everett , P . G . Treas . After tho wedding breakfast the bride and bridegroom left for the Isle of Wight to spend their honeymoon . Bro . and Mrs . McLeod have our sincerest wishes [ for their happiness .
It is always to be regretted when brethren or bodies of brethren find themselves unable to adjust their differences without having recourse to the ordinary legal tribunals of the country ; but in the case of the difference vvhich has arisen in connection with the St .
Andrew ' s Lodge , No . 52 , Banff , we do not see how it was possible to avoid referring it to the Court of Session . Here we have two bodies of brethren claiming to be the St . Andrew's Lodge . One of these bodies is recognised as the said lodge by the Grand Lodge of
Scotland—vvhich is , or ought to be , the supreme arbiter in such a dispute—and the other is not ; but the latter insists that it is the lodge and declines to budge from
its position . At present the case is sub jndice and we are , therefore , unable to express any opinion on thc matter in dispute , but when the time comes , we shall be prepared to do so .
