On the 23 rd ult ., the annual installation meeting of the above lodge , which was founded in 1892 for the special convenience of gentlemen engaged in the tobacco trade , was held at the Inns of Court Hotel , London . D ., replying to the toast of " The Grand Officers , " referred to " this terrible war , " and said the brethren knew what should guide them is Masons they represented all over the globe ; they all sincerely wished peace and prosperity in the time of the Grand Master ; they gave him their most loyal and hearty support in the position of Grand Master of their noble Craft ; they had him to support , the Queen to support , the Royal family to support , and their brethren all over the world to support in Charity , in hearty good fellowship to-day . No matter who came to

this island , or who went to Australia , and other foreign parts , if a Mason he was bound to us heart , body , and soul ; what they were led by was the highest principles of Freemasonry . He was not going to tell them about his little career , but there was one thing he was grateful for and honoured by , and that was the rank bestowed on him by the Prince of Wales some years ago . He hoped it might fall to the lot of other brethren of the lodge to be similarly distinguished . He was glad the brethren appreciated what he had done and the honour that had been conferred on him ; he assured them he should never forget it .

. Bro . W . F . Bates , I . P . M ., proposed "The W . M . " It was a peculiar pleasure to do so , because although the lodge had been consecrated seven years , Bro . Charles Ransford was the first VV . M . who had never received the collar of an Installed Master until that evening . Seven years ago Bro . Charles Ransfordwas initiated , and after serving seven years he had attained the position of VV . M . of his mother lodge . There was also this particular coincidence : that 21 years ago last May he ( Bro . Bates ) was initiated ; to-nightfor the third time , he had relinquished the position of W . M . It

, necessarily followed that in three times seven years he had served the office of W . M . three times . The VV . M . of this evening was the first initiate in the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge , he was initiated by his father with the consent of Bro . VV . H . Bullock , the first W . M . of the lodge . He sincerel y and heartily congratulated Bro . Charles Ransford on becoming W . M . of that lodge in seven years . He ( Bro . Bates ) was a member of five London lodges at the present time , and it would have taken Bro ! Ransford very much longer than seven years to become W . M . in either of those lodges . Of every

office Bro . Ransford had been called upon to fill he had performed the duties in every way to his own satisfaction , and to the gratification of the W . M . he had served . Bro . C . H . I . Ransford , W . M ., in response , said , after thanking the brethren very much for the cordial manner in which they had drunk his health , that he was the first brother who had occupied the W . M . ' s chair in the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge who had not been a VV . M . previously in another lodge . He hoped he should not disgrace the office . . _ .

Bro . Metcalfe , replying to the toast of " The Initiate , " said he deeply appreciatei the very great honour conferred upon him by associating him with the numbers of the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge . He had been particularly impressed aid articled by the ceremonies , and the able and efficient way in which the W . M . had fulfillsd his duties . He thanked the W . Bro . W . F . Bates , I . P . M ., acknowledged the toast of "The Installing Master and the Past Masters . " Seven years ago , when , as a founder of the lodge , he accepted the office of junior Steward , he never expected the time would come so soon thit he should occupy the dignified position of I . P . M . of the lodge . He was ask » d to accept the position of founder of No . 2432 , and was given to understand that the qualification for membership should be that he was connected with the smoking business . The brethren who approached him knew he was not in the trade ; but he ( Bro . Bates ) slid he was a

very good smoker , a big and strong smoker , and if being a good smoker would qualify him , then he would be a member . He was accepted as a founder . He took the subordinate positions , and very gladly took them , and he worked every office up to the present . He did not mean to

say he had done that work more than any brother could , but he tried to bring the brethren on just the same . If what he had done that evening in installing the W . M . of the Sir Walter Raleigh Lodge had pleased them he was satisfied . Whatever duty he was called upon to fulfil , whether the greatest or the least , he should endeavour to do it properly . He was a member of the lodge , and he did not presume on his position of Past Master , but only acted as a member , and would carry any position out to the best of his ability . He would leave it to the brethren to say whether he did it well or not . He thanked the brethren for the very beautiful jewel thev had presented to
